  • Atmospheric pollutant emissions, mainly exhaust gas emissions from vessels, and the resultant social costs of pollution in the Korean harbor cities of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang, Busan and Ulsan, are examined in this study, and the need for an emissions reduction plan is highlighted. Busan had several vessels entering its port, while Mokpo had few vessels, yet the vessels emission contribution was high in both the cities. Ulsan had world-class heavy-chemical industries, Gwangyang had steel mills and Incheon had a manufacturing industry and more vessels entering its port than Mokpo, yet the emission contribution was low in these cities. By calculating exhaust gas emissions from the vessels, it was found that CO2 was the highest, followed by NOx and SOx. By vessel type, Busan, Ulsan, and Incheon had more oil tank vessels, Gwangyang had more cargo vessels, and Mokpo had more ferries. As a result of social cost, Busan paid the highest, while the highest emission was PM. The use of low-sulfur oil can directly reduce PM and, SOx emissions and indirectly reduce NOx emissions. However, in order to reduce high CO2 emissions, only low-sulfur oil will not help. Therefore, the study suggested the need for reduction plan that use of fossil fuels, by using alternative maritime power (AMP).

  • This study presents the linkage method combining the existing Port Management Information System (PORT-MIS) DB with the scattered vessel activity data sets including the hotelling and maneuvering characteristics and specification information of the vessels arriving and departing from the port of Busan from January 2009 to June 2010. By linking the data sets, this study made three types of vessel activity databases: L-PORT-MIS DB with low-level vessel activities, M-PORT-MIS DB with medium-level vessel activities such as hotelling time, H-PORT-MIS DB with high-level vessel activities such as hotelling time, engine power, etc. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimation results show that total GHG emissions decreases when the detailed vessel activities are employed. This decrease in the total GHG emissions by the level of vessel activities implies that the GHG emissions from the low and medium level vessel activities are overestimated due to the aggregated hotelling/maneuvering times and speeds resulting from the past vessel specifications. Therefore, the GHG emissions using the H-PORT-MIS DB are more reliable GHG emission estimates in that the vessel specifications and the observed hotelling time of each vessel are employed in the estimation process. Hence, the high-level vessel activity dataset should be constructed to implement more suitable countermeasures for reducing the GHG emissions in the port of Busan.

  • This paper attempts to estimate GHG emissions, primarily $CO_2$ ship emissions, at the port of Incheon in October 2014. This study employed a bottom-up approach based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to estimate the total amount of fuel consumption and the total amount of $CO_2$ emission produced as a result of fuel combustion. Using a sample of 330 ships operating at the port of Incheon in Korea, the total amount of $CO_2$ gases emitted from ships in October 2014 were estimated to be 164693.06 tons, with estimated total fuel consumption of 51953.64 tons. General cargo ships were most common type of ships, but they were less polluting compared to passenger ships. The detailed emission estimates by ship type revealed that passenger ships were the most polluting ships (81409.6 tons of emissions), followed by tugboats (37248.4 tons), cargo ships (32154.6 tons), ships used for other activities (9039.1 tons), chemical tankers (4027.06 tons), and fishing ships (814.048 tons), respectively.

  • The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water & Sediments was adopted by consensus at a diplomatic conference of IMO at 2004. To prepare the Ballast Water Management Convention, fundamental technologies such as treatment system, type approval, risk assessment and various technical informations for formulation of the regulation for national strategy shall be developed. The information item of voyage and discharge of ship's ballast water are gathered by visiting vessel and agent at port. Using the 97 results by ships type characteristic analysis on the relation between loading/unloading and discharge/uptake of ballast water, the amounts of discharge/uptake of ballast water at each port and all of country in Korea are predicted. Hence, It is apparent that the uptake of ballast water is predicted to about 70 million ton in total of Busan, Incheon, Kwangyang and Ulsan ports at 2006 which is over 3 times than discharges.

  • Recently, the reduction of greenhouse gases(GHG) for climate change is the most important international issue. In order to control efficiency GHG emission rate reduction, it is essential to establish GHG emission inventory preferentially. The emission of ships that are emitting its $CO_2$ in international waters is becoming chief among the issues which country is put under an obligation. In the IMO reports, shipping is estimate to emit 1,046million tonnes of $CO_2$, which corresponds to 3.3% of global emission during 2007. International shipping is estimated to have emitted 870 million tonnes, about 2.7% of global emission of $CO_2$ in 2007. In this study, the general information of GHG emission, based on fuel consumption statistic, Tier 1, and the emission inventory is calculated to break down in to domestic and international emission. The GHG emission from ships in Korea was total 31,646 Gg $CO_2$-eq in 2009, which is included fishing, Korea flag coastal ship, Korea flag ocean going ship and foreign flag ships. And domestic emission and international emission was 5,398Gg $CO_2$-eq, 7,630Gg $CO_2$-eq and foreign flag ship was 18,618Gg $CO_2$-eq respectively.

  • According to domestic air pollutant emission statistics, a considerable amount of air pollutants is generated by ships. Therefore, various policies are being implemented to limit air pollutant emissions from ships and improve the air quality in ports. In addition, international conventions are carried out for the prevention of marine pollution by ships. However, because few studies and experiments have been conducted on the measurement of air pollutants emitted from actually operating ships, this study presented a method and possibility for evaluating air pollutant emissions from a 9,196GT ship actually operating using a portable emission measurement system (PEMS). A difference in emission occurred depending on the RPM and load, and the emission of NOX was 497-2,060ppm, CO2 was 1.55-6.9%, and CO was 0.002-0.14%. The emission specified in the shop test provided by the engine manufacturer differed from the actual emission measured. This study proved that the maximum emission of each air pollutant generated in the entire sailing section of the ship was included in the PEMS measurement range, and the possibility of using PEMS for ships within 10,000GT was verified.

  • This study was focused on the estimations of air pollutants, such as PM(Particulate matters), SOx(Sulfur Oxides), $CO_2$(Carbon diOxides) and NOx(Nitrogen Oxides), from a diesel propulsion engine installed on a naval vessel. Legislative and regulatory actions for exhaust emissions from ships are being strengthened in international communities and national governments to protect human health and the environment. In this context, various technologies have been developed from all of the nations of the world to meet strict standards. These regulations are based on commercial ship applications and according to size, but are not suitable for military naval vessels, which have much different engine operating conditions and hull architectures. Additionally, there is no international emission control system for military ships. Emission factors have been updated for commercial ship types from work at various research institutes; however, it is difficult to develop emission factors for military vessels because of their characteristics. In this paper, exhaust emissions from diesel engines installed on naval vessels under steady navigation condition were estimated with emission inventory methodology applied to ocean going vessels using fuel-based methods and fuel sulfur content analysis.
