A Study on Course Stability in Accordance with Configuration of Ships (선형에 따른 선박의 침로 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • Ship's maneuverability is very important factor in safe ship handling and economical ship operation. Steering characteristics are consisted of course stability and maneuverability. Today in many advanced ship-building countries, they study ship's course stability, using model ship tests, such as straight line tests, rotating arm tests and Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) etc., in tow in tanks. It is the purpose of this paper to provide ship's handlers with better understanding of steering characteristics and to help them in safe controlling and manevering . In this paper, the author simulated response of various vessels, running straight course with constant speed, and they are disturbed by small external disturbance of one degree yaw angle with no angular velocity . The author used the hydrodynamic derivtives resulted at tests of Davidson's laboratory in Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, U.S.A. Course stability was evaluated and analyzed in various respects, such as block coefficient, ratio of ship's length to beam, draft and rudder area ratio etc. The obtained results are as follows : (1) The ship's course stability is affected by magnitude of block coefficient greatly. In case that the block coefficient is more than 0.7, the deviation varies at nearly same rate but the requistite time to reach the steady course is different. (2) The ship's course stability is affected by magnitude of L/B. When the dimensionless time reaches about 3, the deviation and requisite time to reach the steady course are influenced nearly same. After the dimensionless time is about 3, they change on invariable ratio. (3) The effect to course stability by L/T and RA' can be neglected. (4) The reason why thy VLCC and container feeder vessel are unstable on their course is that their block coefficient is generally more than 0.8 and the ratio of ship's length to beam is about 6.0.

  • It has generally used the burial method for the protection methods of submarine cable. Especially in Korea, It has used the protection methods of various types according to fisheries and fishing implements. Present day, All the protection methods-burial, continuous concrete mattress, cast iron pipes, U-duct, concrete bags, Rock Berm, mortar bags, FCM apply to the submarine cable, but these methods just focus on the safety of submarine cable against the external damages not the characteristics of ocean environment and the protection of environment. This research is going to present the protection methods of submarine cable according as the characteristics of ocean environment-external damages, depth of water, seabed condition, wave power and the protection of environment.

  • In general, ships are towed to keep the safe operations in harbor or channel by tug boats. Due to increase in ocean traffic, many accidents are happened in harbor or channel in these days. Therefore it is necessary to predict manoeuvrability of tug-barge system, and to assure the safety of that system. Turg-barge system is composed of tug boat, barge, and towing cable, connecting both ships. Manoeuvring equations of tug-barge system are suggested, and the scopes of model tests are discussed to establish the mathematical models for tug boats in this paper.

  • It was recommended for all ship engaged in international voyages to carry the Satellite Emergency position Indicating Radio Beacon according to Global Maritime Distress & Safety System but also it is tending to be diffused to require the satellite EPIRB installed in small vessel such as a fishery boat by domestic regulations of each countries. Otherwise the domestic regulation can't evaluate exactly the compatibility with the satellite system and the performance of the equipment itself required by international regulation. And even if it is required the performing of the performance inspection in accordance with international regulation, it is difficult to grasp the characteristics of equipment by a generalized measuring equipment. Hence this study performed the measurement for the matters related with an wave forms, modulation characteristics, frequency and the power, etc through the design and implementation of the test bench capable of ensuring most of test items regulated by international regulation. Through this study, it has been paved the way being capable of preparation of the standard regarding to transmission repetition period, phase variation and frequency stability related with the system compatibility and in conclusion, it is enable to improve the performance of a main distress communication equipment directly connected with the life of a survivor.

Humidity Controlled Drying for the Fragments of an Wooden Boat in the Neolithic Age, Excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea (창녕 비봉리 출토 신석기시대 나무배 편의 조습건조)

  • The conservation has been conducted for the fragments of an wooden boat in the Neolithic Age, excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea. The vacuum-freeze drying have been applied to mostly to the small relics, such as wooden lacquerwares or small wooden goods etc.. Therefore, the large objects like a wooden boats have been treated almost by air-drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG solution. The air-drying is needed to impregnate with PEG aqueous solution during long period and run the risk of the fault generation. This report explain an example adapted for the fragments of the wooden boat by humidity-controlled drying(HCD) with slow adjusting moisture content. We did the chemical pre-treatment, PEG aqueous solution. The concentration of the aqueous solution was increased gradually from 10% to 80%. After the impregnation, the objects were dried by the HCD. The dimensional stability of the fragments after treatment was good.

An Effect of Port-related Industry on Regional Economy (항만관련산업이 지역경제에 미치는 영향)

  • Korea has achieved a remarkable growth by pursuing externally-oriented growth policy since 1960s. That is, we imported raw materials and spare parts, manufactured them into products and exported them, which led to successful economic development. Therefore, our marine business has played an important roles as one of key industries. The development of marine business has contributed to efficient distribution and cost reduction in addition to production of added value and creation of employment creation, which improved external competitive power. In spite of economic importance of marine business, national perception on it is in general low and its developmental conditions are considerably poor. Therefore, this study aims to speculate the effect of Port-related business on regional economy using regional input-output tables.

  • To obtain the values of linear stability derivatives, both analytical and experimental methods are now proposed and in use. The experimental method is well known as the planar motion mechanism(PMM) test. Its concept is to drive the model with a prescrived frequency and amplitude of the motion and pick up the hydrodynamic forces. But this kind of method is inconvenient in case we want to know the stability derivatives in wider range of the frequencies. So a different method is attempted that with one test run, we can get the derivatives in wider range of the frequencies. This technique forces the impulsive motion on the model, using the power of the oil pressure pump. This kind of method was originated by Scragg, C.A., Cummins, W.E, or Frank, T., This resarch is a further development of such preceding works. Todd's series 60(Cb=0.7) 2.00M model is chosen for the test and the results are compared with Van Leeuwen's famous PMM test results.

Study on the Manoeuvring Characteristics of a Ship with Stern Bulb (선미벌브를 갖는 선박의 조종특성에 관한 연구)

  • In the present paper, An emphasis is laid upon effects of stern bulb on hydrodynamic property and manoeuvring performance. We carried out captive model tests in circulating water channel with two ship models of which the frame lines of aft bodies are different. such as normal stern form and stern form with bulb, but of which the other parts are exactly same. The tests conducted consist of hull resistance test, effective thrust measurement, oblique tow test, and measurements of factors related to rudder force. From the results of model tests, we discussed effects of stern bulb on hull forces and on hull-propeller-rudder interactions, comparing with normal stern form. Furthermore, we also discussed effects of stern bulb on course stability. turning ability. spiral characteristics and zig-zag manoeuvre by computer simulation. As a result, it is clarified that the adoption of stern bulb makes course stability the worse and turning ability the better. The difference of the hydrodynamic derivatives of naked hull between two ship forms cause the worse course stability of the ship with stern bulb. The differences of the effective inflow velocity to rudder and hull forces induced by steered rudder cause the better turning ability of the ship with stern bulb.

  • Problems that satisfy various constraints while maintaining weight balance in ships or aircraft were studied. In addition, a study was conducted to solve the problem with a mathematical method under the condition that the shape and weight of the load are the same and the m×n (m and n are all odd) mesh structures. The problem is that the existing mathematical weight balancing method is not suitable for circular structures. In this paper, we studied the load stowing problem in a circular space where objects are loaded at the vertices of N equilateral polygons. Assuming that all N conformal polygons have an even number of angles, it was proved that a loading method that always maintains weight balance regardless of the variety of number of loads. By providing the structure and loading method of the drone loading ship, we showed that our method was appropriate.

Determination of Optimal Support Position and Stability for Manufacturing Filter Screen for Ships Using Wedge Wires (웨지 와이어를 이용한 선박용 필터 스크린 제작을 위한 최적 지지 위치 및 안정성 판단)

  • In this study, the optimal support position determination and stability determination of the wedge wire screen were performed for the production of the wedge wire filter screen with improved mesh screen. In order to manufacture a filter screen using a wedge wire, the support rod wedge wire is first installed according to the filtering capacity, and then spot welding is performed while rotating the profile wire. In the existing manufacturing method, it was manufactured using a 3m rod wedge wire and then cut according to dimensions, but it required the manufacture of a 6m cylindrical screen. Due to the increase in wedge wire length, it is difficult to manufacture stress concentration at sagging and fixed positions. In order to shorten the time of analysis, a single wedge wire was applied instead of a plurality of wedge wires. The reliability and validity of the interpretation were presented and the results were derived. After selecting the support point at the 2m position, structural analysis was performed on the entire filter screen to confirm stability.The purpose of this study is to identify the maximum deflection of the wire for the production of a 6m wedge wire screen and secure design basic data so that it can work safely through optimal support.
