  • There are requirement of surface roughness in mechanical elements that has minute surface of several nm degree. When high precision surface roughness measurement is made with stylus type surface roughness measuring apparatus, measuring accuracy depend on the tip radius of diamond stylus. Therefore, ultra precision machining was accomplished using ion sputter machining in order to machining the stylus tip radius less than 0.5.mu.m, which is impossible through lapping machining. In this study, optimal machining condition for the ion sputter machining was obtained through the experiment under the various varing machinbing quantity and condition of diamond stylus. And as the result of applying this optimal condition, the good result was obtained that machining probability of stylus tip radius less than o.5.mu.m is 93%.

  • Instrumented sharp indentation test is a well-directed method to measure hardness and elastic modulus. The sharp indenter such as Berkovich and conical indenters have a geometrical self-similarity in theory, but the self-similarity ceases to work in practice due to inevitable indenter tip-blunting. In this study we analyzed the load-depth curves of conical indenter with finite tip-radius via finite element method. Using the numerical regression data obtained from Kick's law, we first confirmed that loading curvature is significantly affected by tip radius as well as material properties. We then established a new method to evaluate Young's modulus, which successfully provides the value of elastic modulus with an average error of less than 2%, regardless of tip-radius and material properties of both indenter and specimen.

  • In accordance with the high precision of mechanical elements, it has been required to high precision in surface roughness measurement and, therefore, stylus tip radius is manufa- ctured less than 2 .mu. m through ion sputter machining. In this experiment, by suing ion sputter machined stylus pf fine tip, radius and lapping machined stylus, surface roughness of standard specimens, silicon wafer were measured and then Rmax, Ra, RMS value were investi- gatedaccording to the variation of tip radius of stylus. As a result, measuring error due to the variation of stylus tip radius in surface roughness measurement was decreased by using ion sputter machined stylus and also the measuring accuracy was improved. And the measuring variation of Ra, RMS calculated from correlation coefficient lager than 0.9 on the wave of short period and amplitude using ion sputter machined stylus of fine tip radius.

  • The paper describes an experimental investigation of axisymmetric diesel spray and flame which is held in rapid compression machine (RCM) with electromagnetic single injection nozzle. The axisymmetric diesel spray and flame are taken with high speed photograph and analysis it with image processor. The data presented include fuel concentration of spray, flame temperature, soot concentration of flame in axial and radial direction at a moment and compared it with each other.

  • The sharp indenters such as Berkovich and conical indenters have a geometrical self-similarity in theory, but different materials have the same load-depth curve in case of single indentation. In this study, we analyze the load-depth curves of conical indenter with angles of indenter via finite element method. From FE analyses of dual-conical indentation test, we investigate the relationships between indentation parameters and load-deflection curves. With numerical regressions of obtained data, we finally propose indentation formulae for material properties evaluation. The proposed approach provides stress-strain curve and the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent with an average error of less than 2%. It is also discussed that the method is valid for any elastically deforming indenters made of tungsten carbide and diamond for instance. The proposed indentation approach provides a substantial enhancement in accuracy compared with the prior methods.

  • This paper presents the construction of an ultra-precision machining system and machining experiments using the developed system. The system is composed of air bearing system, granite bed, air pad, and linear feeding mechanism. The cutting conditions have great effect on the surface quality in ultra-precision machining. the ultra-precision machining is mainly processed by several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth of cut and feed rate. For this, tools with sharper cutting edge and less tool wear are needed. To satisfy these requirement, diamond is generally used as a tool material for ultra-precision machining. In order to evaluate the cutting characteristics of the PCD and MCD tools on the aluminum alloy, the machining experiments performed using the developed system.

  • Under excessive plasticity, the fracture toughness of a material depends on its size and geometry. Under fully yielded conditions, the stresses in a material near its crack tip are not unique but rather depend on the geometry. Therefore, the single-parameter J-approach is limited to a high-constraint crack geometry. The JQ theory has been proposed for establishing the crack geometry constraints. This approach assumes that the crack-tip fields have two degrees of freedom. In this study, the crack-tip stress field of a fully circumferential surface-cracked pipe under combined loads is investigated on the basis of the JQ theory by using finite element analysis. The combined loads are a tensile axial force and the thermal gradient in the radial direction. Q-stresses of the crack geometry and its loading state are used to determine the constraint effects. The constraint effects of secondary loading are found to be greater than those of primary loading. Therefore, thermal shock is believed to be the most severe loading condition of constraint effects.

  • For the prediction of the crack growth initiation from a blunt notch or a precrack in a prestrained material under plane strain tension and small-scale yielding conditions, a microscopic fracture criterion is proposed in terms of the crack tip opening displacement(COD) needed for the attainment of fracture strain at a microstructural distance. Smooth blunting of a crack tip with an initial root radius is assumed, and strain distributions on the crack-line axis are calculated at each deformation stage until the distributions against an original distance normalized to the COD are insensitive to an initial root radius. This case of no initial-root-radius effect is taken as for a sharp crack tip, on which the criterion is applied to determine the characteristic length of material from a critical COD for a fatigue-precracked specimen. The predicted COD at the fracture initiation from a crack with an initial root radius or a prestraining shows reasonable agreement with experimental values.

  • The practicability of Ion-Sputter machining renders it possible to make diamond stylus for surface roughness measurement with micro stylus tip radius less than 2${\mu}mR$, and to measure surface roughness of fine-machined surface. In this study, we researched the wear or Ion-Sputtered stylus with 0.1${\mu}mR$ and 0.5${\mu}mR$ for micro-figure measurement and polished stylus with 0.5${\mu}mR$ according to measurement distance. As a result, we know that the case of Ion-Sputtered stylus is worn down easilier the case of polished stylus. And we know that in the evaluation of stylus wear, it is more useful method that examine the wear by measuring the variation of stylus tip radius than by evaluating the variation of Ra values.
