Listeners' Selection Criteria and Behaviors Related to Music Listening (음악감상 시 감상자의 선곡기준 및 행동)

  • Background: With the advancement of various technologies and media, we have entered an era of music appreciation that transcends physical spaces and devices. Following these changes, research is needed to understand how listeners select and different parameters regarding their listening behaviors. Objective: This study aims to investigate the listening behaviors of listeners and the criteria for music selection. Method: A survey was conducted with 112 adults aged 18 and older to examine listening behaviors and selection criteria during music listening. The survey consisted of 29 items including multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Results: It was found that listeners regularly listen to newly updated music as they have more access to them via various streaming platforms. In terms of listening situations, the majority listened to music while commuting (35%) or exercising (29%), both define as energy-consuming activities. All music elements including rhythm/tempo(28%), melody(26%), timber(25%) and lyric(20%) were considered with similar proportion for music selection. In terms of music elements. Furthermore, three categories of non-musical factors influencing music selection were identified, which are relational, cultural, and emotional. Relational(41%) and cultural(41%) factors showed to have highest impact respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study provide basic data regarding music listening behaviors and what they consider when selecting music.

Analysis of Music Rationale and Fidelity in Music Emotion Regulation Studies (국외 음악정서조율 연구의 음악 논거 및 충실도 분석)

  • With increasing interest in the emotional responses to music, research on the regulatory mechanisms of music has been ongoing. This study examines the fidelity of music emotion regulation (MER) studies by analyzing the quality of rationales provided for using music to induce emotional regulation. A total of 45 internationally published studies were collected for review, and analysis was conducted on criteria related to the use of music, including duration, number of pieces, selection rationale, and the selecting agent. Despite the research objectives aiming to investigate the emotional regulation effects of music, it was found that the majority of studies lacked specific information about the music used, and there was weak consistency among the studies. Additionally, reliable evidence for music activities, music selection, and music implementation time was not provided, and there was a lack of logical basis for the regulatory mechanisms of music. The results of this study imply the necessity for fidelity to the rationale of music emotion regulation to establish itself as a research area. Such rigorous fidelity will contribute to increasing the replicability and integrity of research on the therapeutic uniqueness of music.

A Study on the Motive Development of Larry Grenadier Bass Solo (래리 그레니디어 솔로 연주에서 활용되는 모티브 전개기법에 관한 연구)

  • As the smallest unit in the composition of any melody, motive forms the basis for melodic tunes and establishes a starting point for any creation. Among other melody composition methods, how to form a motive, change it, and refine it to develop a solo is important in playing solos, and in an impromptu jazz solo, analyzing how motive is changed and developed and using it can be a method or idea to approach a more melodic solo. This thesis consists of a thorough analysis of the kinds of developmental methods that were used to change and advance motives in three solos by Larry Grenadier, a musician who is active with creative ideas in many genres of contemporary jazz music. After such analysis, these motive development methods were applied to a rendition. Since judgment was used in the motive development methods mentioned in the introduction, elements in the methods that appeared to be motives but were impossible to analyze were excluded from the analysis, therefore making it one limitation of this study. There will be a need for future studies to overcome this limitation.

Therapeutic Rationale for Music Therapy Interventions With Older Adults: An Analysis of the Literature (국내 노인 대상 음악중재연구 내 치료 논거 세부 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to review the literature on music interventions with older adults and to analyze the rationale for the type of intervention and type of music selected. A search of KCI journals for research including older adults and music-based interventions identified 33 published articles, and 23 of these studies met the criteria for inclusion in this analysis. Included studies were analyzed in terms of the contents of the interventions and the appropriateness of the rationale reported for selecting the intervention and music. Each study was analyzed in terms of the relevance of the reported rationale to target goals and the characteristics of the study participants. The results showed that many of the included studies incorporated a variety of activities but failed to include a valid rationale for using those activities to achieve the target goals. Also, many of the studies tended to select music based on participants' preferences or perceived familiarity without thorough consideration of the therapeutic function of music in the given intervention. This study presents how music therapy interventions with older adults have been conducted without sufficient attention to the selection of the intervention and presented music. There remains a need to delineate which intervention and music characteristics should be utilized to obtain particular outcomes with specific populations.

A Study on the Listener's Emotional Perception of Music According to Harmonic Progression Level (음악의 화음 전개 수준에 따른 감상자의 정서 지각 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare participants' perceived emotion following harmonic changes in music. In this study, 144 participants, aged 19 to 29 years, listened to music online that included low to high harmonic progression in tonal music (major-minor). After listening to each piece of music, participants were asked to rate 4 items using a 7-point Likert scale: emotional potency, arousal, degree to which the harmony impacted the listener's emotions, and listener's preference for the music. There were significant differences between each of the four items upon the level of harmonic progression. When the participants were divided into two groups (i.e., those with a background in music and those with no background in music), there was a significant difference between the groups in terms of emotional potency, but there was no significant interaction effect. This study confirmed that various emotional responses in listeners can be induced by controlling the exogenous variables in musical excerpts. Based on this, it is expected that the harmonic progression level can be provided to the client to be used as an effective therapeutic tool in music therapy intervention.
