  • The purpose of this study is to derive a major trend through exhaustive search of papers contained in "Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society" that has been published for 40 years. Therefore, 1,365 papers published in "Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society" from 1974 to 2013 were analyzed. The analysis criteria include detailed subject and joint research status, research fund supporting, research area etc. The analysis results are as follows. First, as for research topics, papers on library and information science were the most, 452 papers followed by resource organization, 213 papers. The rest was found in the order of information service 188, information science 155 papers, reading guidance 101, library management 91, bibliography 84, collection development 58, archives and records management 20 papers. Through this, it was analyzed that information science is on an increasing trend while bibliography is on an decreasing trend and records management shows sluggish production. Second, as for research fund supporting, it turned out that 428 papers were funded and 315 papers among them were supported by the university while the remaining 108 papers were supported by the government. Third, joint research is on an increasing trend and unlike the fact that there have been no papers for early, papers were found to increase up to 303 papers for recent. Fourth, unlike the early phenomenon concentrated in Daegu, research areas showed even distribution throughout the country in recent years. This showed that it has grown from certain area-based academic journal to nationwide academic journal.

  • This study analyzes the relationship of citations appearing in the patent data to understand knowledge transfers and impacts between patent documents in the field of pharmaceutical research. Patent data were collected from a website, Google Patents. The top 25 assignees were selected by searching for patent documents related to pharmaceutical research. We identify the citation relationships between assignees, then calculate and compare the values of h-index and derived indicators by using the number of citations and rank for each document of each assignee. As a result, in the case of pharmaceutical research, the assignee, such as 'Pfizer, MIT, and Abbott' shows a high impact. Among the five bibliometric indicators, the g-index and hS-index show similar results, and the indicators are the most related to the rankings of Total Citation Frequency, Cites per Patents, and Maximum Citation Frequency. In addition, it is highly related to the five indicators in the order of Total Citation Frequency, Cites per Patents, and Maximum Citation Frequency. In some cases, it is difficult to make an accurate comparison with Cites per Patents alone, which is previously known to indicate the technological influence of patent assignees.

  • As a first step in developing a more effective and robust approach to faculty research performance assessment, this study analyzed the existing faculty research assessment methods by comparing Korean universities' research evaluation standards, National Research Foundation of Korea's (KRF) standard for assessing research proposals, and various bibliometric measures. The study data included research evaluation standards of KRF along with 27 Korean universities with Library and Information Science (LIS) department, and the publication data of 183 LIS faculties in Korean universities from 2001 to 2015, which consisted of 3,863 papers 16,978 citations. After the comparative analysis of research evaluation standards, the study examined the rankings of institutions and faculty produced by applying the collected standards and bibliometric metrics to the publication data. The study showed that Korean university standards for research evaluation, which aim to consider both productivity and impact of faculty research, differ from similar bibliometric measures such as h-index, and the difference could significantly impact the assessment of faculty research performance.

  • In order to ascertain disciplinary differences in publication patterns that can help improve assessment of research performance in Korea, we analyzed the bibliometric data of six disciplines from Korea Citation Index. Results showed differences in research size, competitiveness, productivity, impact, and collaboration among disciplines. Disciplines in science were the largest in terms of author and institution followed by humanities and social science, but humanities produced the most publications per author, followed by social science and science disciplines. Sociology publications received most citation per paper but humanities received most citations per author, which was greatly influenced by the number of co-authors per paper. Distribution of author counts per paper varied widely across disciplines. Humanities were dominated by single-author publications, whereas the majority of publications in sciences were co-authored. The study also highlighted differences in citation lag time and illustrated differences in distribution and impact of core authors and institutions across disciplines.

  • This paper aims to explore the citation patterns of conference papers in 'Information Science' discipline and to analze impacts of various cited works-related factors on future citations of conference papers. Existing bibliometric studies has investigated citation patterns and the statistical relations between a variety of bibliographic factors and the future citations of literature. However, the attentions have been focused largely on journal articles, and the bibliometric studies targeting conference papers are still in an infant stage. Therefore, this study, which is based on 1,904 conference papers in 'Information Science' field, examined several citation patterns and the contributions of the factors about cited works - the number of cited works, type of cited works, citation rates and ages of cited works at the time of being cited and the rate of self-citedness - to the future citation of the citing target articles. The data source of this study including the properties of target articles and cited works and citation rates of target articles was Scopus. As the results, 53% and 29% of the cited works were conference papers and journal articles, respectively. 14% of them are non-traditional types such as web pages, technical reports, patent, etc. More than 60% of the cited works were 5 years old or less. Among several factors considered in this paper, the number of conference papers and the number of non-traditional types of works are the most contributing factors on the citation rates of target articles. The recency of the cited works is also significant contributor on the citation rates of target articles. That is, the target articles citing more conference papers and non-traditonal types of works earned more citations. The target articles citing recent works also earned more citations.

  • In the current information environment around the library community, metadata is recognized as a sophisticated and powerful tool that can manage and represent information resources. However, with the discreet use of the concepts of metadata and metadata standard, there is no clear boundary that differentiates metadata standard from simple resource description and traditional bibliographic structure, leading to confusion as to what a metadata and metadata standard is. To consider these issues, this research discussed what metadata and metadata standards are based previous definitions of metadata. Based on those definitions, the fundamental concept of metadata is reestablished to be properly used in the library community.

  • Effective assessment of faculty research performance should involve considerations of both quality and quantity of faculty research. This study analyzed methods for evaluating faculty research output by comparing the rankings of Library and Information Science(LIS) faculty by publication counts, citation counts, and research performance assessment guidelines employed by Korean universities. The study results indicated that faculty rankings based on publication counts to be significantly different from those based on citation counts. Additionally, faculty rankings measured by university guidelines showed bigger correlations with rankings based on publication counts than rankings by citation counts, while differences in universities guidelines did not significantly affect the faculty rankings. The study findings suggest the need for bibliometric indicators that reflect the quality as well as the quantity of research output.

  • This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of the bibliographic description of ISBD Consolidated edition published in 2011 and to grasp the considerations in applying the rules of ISBD consolidated edition to KCR4. For achieving this, the four aspects were analyzed such as the description area and data elements, the resource types, the punctuation, and the order of the elements of ISBD Consolidated edition(2011). The characteristics of ISBD Consolidated edition are as follows. First, the content form and the media type area are added in new 0 area and elements are designated by mandatory to confirm to FRBR. Second, content form, content qualification and media type replaced GMD in title and statement of responsibility area. Third, the prescribed punctuations were retained even when this results in double punctuation, and individual square brackets were preferred than entire square brackets when using square brackets to all elements in same area. Fourth, the order of elements in description was set out by patterns of data elements in areas, therefore could reduce the confusion of the order of elements. ISBD Consolidated edition as an international standard would make various rules to maintain the uniformity, but also respects the bibliographic practices of individual countries. Therefore, each country must revise its own rule to conform the ISBD Consolidated edition as well as reflect its unique situation. In Korea, since KCR4 was developed based on the previous edition of ISBD, it should be revised to confirm to the ISBD Consolidated edition. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to the revision of KCR4.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether bibliographic factors influence citation speed and the number of citations or not and whether citation speed affects the number of citations. Another purpose of this study is that if bibliographic factors carry out a significant role. For this analysis, this study is based on the assumption that all papers published by researchers in South Korea distributed power law shape. The main results of this study are as follows: First, the papers written by foreign first authors or reprint authors were cited more quickly from first citation speed and average citation speed. These papers were cited much more from first citation speed and average citation speed than by domestic first authors or reprint authors. The papers, collaborated by international researchers, were cited more quickly from first citation speed but were not different from average citation speed than by only domestic researchers. The papers, collaborated by international researchers, were cited much more than by only domestic stand-alone researchers. The number of authors and the impact factor influenced first citation speed, average citation speed and the number of citations. Second, the faster first citation speed and the slower average citation speed, the more papers were cited. First citation speed more affected the higher number of citations than the average citation speed. Third, all five bibliographic factors influenced the impact relationship from first citation speed to the number of citations through the moderating effect analysis. Fourth, only three bibliographic factors (the country of the first author; the country of the reprint author; the number of the coauthors) affected the impact relationship from first citation speed to the number of citations but two bibliographic factors did not influence through the moderating effect analysis.
