Temporal and Spatial Changes in the Species Composition and Abundance of Benthic Polychaetes after the Construction of Shihwa Dike (West Coast of Korea) (시화 방조제 건설 이후 시화호 다모류의 종 조성 몇 서식밀도 변화)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the temporal and spatial changes in species composition and abundance of polychaetes in Lake Shihwa. Macrobenthic fauna were collected from eight sampling surveys performed in March, June, September and December of 1994, March and October of 1995, February and August of 1996, using a modified van Veen grab with 0.1 $m^2$ coverage area. Polychaete worms, the most abundant macrofaunal group, comprised of 1~22 species at each investigation; number of species continuously decreased during the survey period. The mean density of polychaete was $794{\pm}1,275\;indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and showed a large fluctuation over time. The variation in abundance was mainly coupled with the domination of Polydora ligni occupying 83% in total density. The next dominant species were Pseudopolydora kempi (mean density of 31 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$) and Capitella capitata (mean density of 23 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$). Abundant polychaetes in Lake Shihwa are known to be tolerant to sediment pollution. Ecological indices such as diversity (H') and dominance (D) also indicated that the number of species significantly decreased and a few species predominated in Lake Shihwa after the dike construction. The azoic zone were extended from the upper reach of Lake Shihwa to the vicinity of the dike over time. The reduced number of species, predominance of pollution indicator species and development of an azoic zone reflect severe deterioration of benthic environments in Lake Shihwa.

Differences in Density and Body Weight of Rodents in Different Restored Forest Areas after Forest Fire (산불피해지 복원방법에 따른 설치류의 서식밀도 및 체중 차이)

  • This study was conducted to clarity the differences in density and body weight of rodents among unburned and two burned areas (silvicultured and natural restored areas) after forest fire from July to September 2004 in coniferous forest of Samcheok, Korea. The density of rodents was the least in the silvicultured area. There was no differences in density between the unburned and natural restored areas. Also, mean body weight of rodents in the natural restored area was higher than in the silvicultured area. Shrubs, seedlings, snags and CWD (coarse woody debris) would be good for inhabitation of the rodents in forest fired area. Therefore, coverage of understory layer should be maintained in forest fired area.

The Study on the Distribution and Inhabiting Status of Nutria (Myocastor coypus) in Korea (뉴트리아 (Myocastor coypus)의 국내 분포 및 서식 현황에 관한 연구)

  • This study has researched the national expansion, dispersion of nutria and investigated its inhabitation status for the past 3 years. The report has shown that the number of nutria habitat, reported to be distributed in 9 cities or districts in 2010, has been increased to 13 in 2012. In the research of 629 nutria habitats, 95.9% of habitat traces were found in Busan-Kyungnam area. From the research of relative density by location type for the 6 survey areas in these 5 areas above, it was shown 3.98(${\pm}2.56$)ind./100m in 2010, 2.90(${\pm}2.69$)ind./100m in 2011 and 1.39(${\pm}0.66$)ind./100m in 2012. From the research of relative density by habitat types, it was shown 3.48(${\pm}2.15$)ind./100m in palustrine wetland area, $1.01{\pm}(0.25)ind.$/100m in river area and $3.69{\pm}(2.83)ind.$/100m in riverine wetland area. It was shown that the annual average density in the areas has slightly been decreased for the past 3 years between 2010 and 2012. It also reported that the habitat density in the river area is a bit lower than that in the wetland area. Currently it can be determined that the nutria has fully adapted themselves to the various local environments of wetland, river, stream, and so on in Korea and the Relative density could be remarkably increased especially in the favorable condition like a wetland. As the ones living in the area with over-density could be spread out to other areas, the efficient management plan to control should be prepared considering ecological conditions.

Studies on Community of Meiobenthos in the Sediments of the Lake Shiwha (시화호 퇴적물에 서식하는 중형저서동물의 군집구조에 관하여)

  • Community structure, horizontal distribution, density, and ratio between nematodes and benthic harpacticoid copepods of the meiobenthos within the sediments of inner Sihwa Lake were investigated in May 1999 and May 2000. A total of 11 and 8 classes of meiobenthic animals were identified in 1999 and 2000, respectively, which were much lower than other coastal areas. The dominant animals during both sampling periods was the nematodes, followed by sarco-mastigophorans, nauplius of crustaceans, benthic harpacticoid copepods and polychaetes. These five classes of animals comprised more than 90% of total abundance of neiobenthos presented in the samples. In 2000, a lot of polychaete larvae were identified. The most abundant animal were the size that fits in 0.063 mm sieve size. Lower density was observed upper inner part of the Sihwa Lake during both sampling periods, and higher density was observed around the Sihwa floodgates. The average density between those two numbers were observed in the samples collected in the middle of the lake. Lower nematodes to betnhic harpacticoides (N/C) ratio, a relative indicator of environmental pollution, was observed to be lower around the floodgate but higher ratios were observed in the upper inner Sihwa Lake. The present study indicated that inner upper part of the lake becomes unsuitable for the meiobenthos, and the most inner upper lake was considered to be polluted.

Distribution of benthic organisms and growth and obesity of mussels (Mytilus coruscus) by depth in Geomundo, south coast of Korea (한국의 남해 거문도해역에 자생하는 홍합(Mytilus coruscus)의 수심별 성장, 비만도와 저서생물의 분포)

  • We investigated the distribution characteristics of mussels (Mytilus coruscus) growing in the Geomundo sea area by water depth. The research was also conducted to identify the surrounding benthic organisms. Mussels showed high density and low obesity in low water depths. The lower the density, the higher the obesity level appeared in deeper water. The morphological characteristics also appeared to increase as the water depth deepened. In addition, the shell length and total weight were more strongly correlated at a depth of 12 m than at 2 m. The total weight by the growth of the shell length and shell height was affected by the water depth. The analysis showed that the density and biomass of the algae inhabiting the surroundings decreased somewhat as the water depth increased. In benthic animals, the number of mussels tended to decrease slightly at the point where oysters dominated, at a depth of 2 m. Conversely, the number of oysters tended to decrease in deeper water dominated by mussels. Thus, the spatial competition between oysters and mussels was affected by the water depth. Also, mussels did not appear in areas where large algae flourished, suggesting that the survival of mussels was affected by the presence or absence of large algae.

Environmental Factors and Population Density of Brackish Water Clam, Corbicula japonica on Narndae Stream in Yangyang, Gangwon (양양 남대천 기수재첩, Corbicuza Japonica의 서식환경과 밀도)

  • Hydrological factors prevailing in the Namdae stream were as follows : temperature = -0.2~$26.8^{\circ}C$, salinity = 0.50~3.21$\textperthousand$, DO = 5.21~8.13 ppm, $PO_{4}-P$ = ND~1.37 ppm, $NO_{2-}$ = 0.10~0.81 ppm, COD = 1.53~2.82 ppm, $H_2 S$ = ND~0.0012 ppm and IL = 0.85~1.36 %. Sediment was typical, gravelly sand or sand with very good sorting value ranging from 0.53 to 1.77$\varphi$. Population density of the clam C. japonica ranged from 2 to 464/$m^2$. The clams were divided into four size classes, based on shell length of small (0~10 mm), medium (10~20 mm), large (20~30 mm) and largest (>30 mm), and were encountered at the frequency of 3.2, 50.4, 43.3 and 3.1 %, respectively.

Differences in Characteristics of Habitat and Rodent Populations Between Before and After Damaged Tree Removals at Forest Fired Areas in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, Korea (강원도 삼척 산불피해지역에서 피해목 제거 전과 후의 서식환경 및 설치류 개체군 특성 차이)

  • This study was conducted to clarify the differences in habitat characteristics and rodent populations between before and after damaged tree removals at forest fired areas in coniferous forest, Samcheok, Gangwon Province, Korea. The understory coverage and the number of shrub stem were increased by forest succession. Number of snags and downed CWD (coarse woody debris) were decreased after damaged tree removals. Population density of Apodemus agrarius was increased after damaged tree removal. However, population density of total rodents, Apodemus peninsulae and Eothenomys regulus were decreased. Changes in habitat structures may be influenced in rodent species composition. Especially, that would be negative effect on forestdwelling rodents.
