  • This is a correlational study to investigate the degree of expectation regarding aging, depression and health promotion lifestyle and to identify the factors influencing health promotion lifestyle among health checkup examinee. The subjects of the study were 143 health checkup examinee who visited the M medical center located in G Metropolitan city. Data were collected from July 5 to 21, 2016 using the structured questionnaire of self-report form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression. As a result, health promoting lifestyle were correlated with expectation regarding aging positively, and with depression negatively. The factors influencing the health promotion lifestyle were education level, perceived health status, time to move to health care facilities, expectation regarding aging, and depression. With controlled general characteristics, the level of health promotion lifestyle was better explained by the addition of the independent variables of expectation regarding aging, and depression, and the explanatory power of the final model was calculated as 27.0%. Therefore, in order to improve health-promoting lifestyle, it is necessary to consider cognitive factors (knowledge, expectation regarding aging) and psychological factor (depression) besides physical approach.

  • On the basis of Sternberg's theory of mental self-government, this examined the difference in thinking style between gifted science students and non-gifted students, and their earth science concepts by the different types of thinking styles. The subjects were consisted of 120 students from the Busan Science Academy and 122 students from two general high schools in Busan, Korea. All participants responded to the Thinking Styles Inventory which is a self-report test consisting of 65 items, and essay questions for examining the students' earth science concepts. The results are as follows. First, the gifted science students prefer legislative, judical, anarchic, global, and liberal styles, where non-gifted students prefer executive, oligarchic, and conservative styles. Second, Type I thinking style group prove to have more complex concepts in relation to the geological and astronomical areas than those of the Type II thinking style group in both of the gifted and non-gifted students. This indicates that Type I thinking style students use a deep learning approach where Type II thinking style students use a surface learning approach.

The subjects for this study consisted of 142 middle aged and 201 elders who lived in 3 cities of convenience sampling method. The Data was collected through personal interviews with questionnaires from March to July, 2014. For the data analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression were used with SPSS Statistics program. The determinants on self-rated health status were present illness, stress management, health responsibility, fatigue, anger, tension, and social support among the middle-aged persons and physical activity, present illness, confusion, and exercise among elderly persons. On the basis of the results in this study, we should develop differentiated health promotion programs through education, counselling and health examination for the middle-aged adults and elderly.

  • This research is a descriptive study that aimed to identify the health knowledge and optimistic bias related to stroke of middle-aged adults and the effect these had on their health-promoting lifestyle. The research was conducted from July 15 to August 15, 2015. The research subjects were 191 adults aged between 40 to 60 years. A structured questionnaire was used and self-administered for data collection. The PASW Statistics 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 programs were used for data analysis, and analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling analysis were conducted. It was found that the middle-aged adults recognized smoking and hypertension as higher risk factors for stroke than diabetes, and there was a slight optimistic bias for stroke. Health knowledge about stroke had correlations with optimistic bias (r = -.143, p = .048) and health-promoting lifestyle (r = .268, p = < .001), while optimistic bias had correlations with interpersonal relationships and stress (r = .177, p = .014) in health-promoting lifestyle. In addition, health-promoting lifestyle affected health knowledge more than optimistic bias. In conclusion, it was found that the active information acquisition, health knowledge, and optimistic bias of middle-aged adults toward stroke were important factors pertaining to a stroke-related health-promoting lifestyle. Therefore, an education program to improve the health-promoting lifestyle related to stroke in middle-aged adults should be considered as a way to enhance stroke-related health knowledge and reduce optimistic bias.

Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the SPSS 23.0 program. The average health-promoting lifestyle was 44.27 points. The health-promoting lifestyle of the study participants showed a positive correlation between the optimistic bias(r=.18, p=.001) and social support(r= .61, p<.000). According to the results of multiple regression analysis, perception of Necessity for Stroke Education(β=.12, p=.010), optimistic bias(β=.18, p=.040), and social support(β=.48, p<.000) were shown to be significant factors that affected the health-promoting lifestyle of the participants. These variables explained 38.5%. Therefore, an health education program to improve the health-promoting lifestyle related to stroke in adults should be considered as a way to enhance social support and reduce optimistic bias.

  • International comparative studies of students' performance in mathematics have shown that Korean students possess very negative attitudes toward mathematics, while they are ranked as one of the highest in the cognitive achievement of mathematics. This has prompted mathematics educators to seek for a way to improve the quality of mathematics education. In this context, this research has been conducted to investigate the learning style of Korean middle school students under the assumption that it is of essence to understand the characteristics of our students as mathematics learners. For the purpose, in-depth interview had been conducted and sixteen middle students participated in the interview. The students were chosen to represent the average group of their age-cohorts based on their performance in mathematics and their SES. The interview was designed as a semi-structured clinical interview. In the interview, the students were given mathematical tasks dealing with central themes in the domain of function. Each student was given about 30 to 50 minutes to solve the tasks. After an interviewee finished the tasks, s/he was asked to explained how s/he solved the tasks. The researchers asked additional questions to clarify the students' understanding of the mathematical themes in the tasks and to identify their strategies for learning mathematics. The analysis of the in-depth interview has primarily identified the characteristics of the students' understanding of the main themes in function and then has been extended to investigate their characteristic styles for learning mathematics. The analysis of the interview identified the learning styles of the students as 'inductive learning based on prototypical cases', 'repeated practice of exemplar mathematics problems', 'disengaged learning', and 'double standards in learning mathematics'. Based on the results of the analysis, this research presents the implications for the improvement of mathematics education.

  • This descriptive study was conducted to identify the relationship between knowledge of stroke and stroke-related health promoting lifestyle among nursing students. Data were collected from September 21 to 26, 2020, from 182 nursing students. Data were self-reported using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis test. The mean stroke knowledge score of the participants was 14.97±3.13. The mean score on knowledge of stroke risk factors was 8.69±1.98, and that for knowledge of stroke warning signs was 5.43±1.31. The mean health promoting lifestyle score was 2.93±0.47. Knowledge of risk factors according to general and health-related characteristics showed significant differences in age and money on hand. Knowledge of warning signs according to general and health-related characteristics showed significant differences in the family history of stroke. Health promoting lifestyle to general and health-related characteristics showed significant differences in religion, satisfaction with major, subjective health status, and body mass index. In conclusion, nursing students had high knowledge of stroke, but stroke-related health promoting were not.
