  • This study empirically examines motivations of entering college of education and academic problems that pre-service teachers encounter under the curricular activities. We analyze the phenomena of professional development under the four categories: motivation toward entering college of education, pedagogical content knowledge, subject matter knowledge and future vision. We conducted survey for the S university students first and interviewed 3 selected participants. Almost 50 students from college of education participated answering to the surveys. Using SPSS package, there was no significant difference between freshmen, sophomore and junior students in any category Male students responded more positively than female students in all the categories. To explore survey results deeply, we selected 3 students from sophomore and junior levels and 2 extra senior students to conduct interviews. The interpretation of the data described how their academic problems unfold partly because they seek another major and how their professional development take place carrying out practicum activities. Most of the interviewees felt that their academic lives were affected motivations of entering college of education and difficulties of studying subject matter knowledge. At the end, several suggestions are added for future research.

  • Based on the analysis of ecomorphological characters for 84 tree and shrub species, climax indices were estimated so as to interpret the position of the successional sere for the species in the natural deciduous forest. Nineteen ecomorphological characters, considered to be associated with successional gradient in the forest, were selected for the study. One of 2 to 4 steps per character for each species was given on a standardized scale of increasing climaxness, and the index was computed by percent of the sum of the scoring values for total score. Calculated mean value of 54.2 for all indices. Carpinus laxiflora had the highest index value of 83.3, and Populus davidiana recorded the lowest of 18.8. The most climax group, greater than 70 of the index, contained only 9 species, intermediate group, between 40 to 70 of the index, had 58 species, and the most pioneer group, less than 40 of the index comprised 17 species. The result has noticed that the large number of species would take advantage of most diverse resource and niche in the intermediate stage of the sere in the forest. The three components, i.e., light absorption, reproduction, and wood quality were used as axes for a 3-dimensional projection of the relative position for 44 species by principal component analysis. Along the similar ecomorphological characters, four recognized species group were classified by cluster analysis. The distribution pattern of plant families on the index gradient showed that the Betulaceae and Aceraceae had the widest seral amplitude, and the Salicaceae was a family typified as pioneer. There were no families specializing entirely with climax niche.

  • To prepare a method for improving the oral health-related quality of life for Chinese foreign students by examining the oral health care behavior affecting the oral health-related quality of life, a self-administered survey was conducted with 236 Chinese foreign students at an university located in Jeonbuk during April 2 -May 5, 2013. The results showed that 65.3% had not visited the dentist within one year, 82.6% had not received scaling within one year, and 68.2% had not received oral health education. In regards to the OHIP-14 according to the general characteristics, there was a significant difference in the school year, health insurance enrollment status and overseas study life satisfaction (p<0.05). In regards to the OHIP-14 according to the oral health care behavior, there was a significant difference in the subjective oral health condition, the experience of having visited a dentist within one year and an experience of having received scaling (p<0.05). As for the influencing factors on the oral health-related quality of life, they were found to be the subjective oral health condition and the experience of having received scaling within one year (p<0.05). For the purpose of helping Chinese foreign students to conveniently use medical institutions when oral health-related problems arise, there is a need for a translated version of the guidebook in their native language, the availability of medical professional interpreters, the availability of a university level oral health service center, and practical oral health education to enhance oral health.

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of self-esteem, appearance satisfaction, and satisfaction in their major on the employment stress of nursing college students. The subjects were 194 students from four colleges of nursing in P-province in Korea. Data were collected from self-administered questionnaires, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients. Multiple regression with dummy variables was used for statistical analysis of the data. The results revealed the following scores: self-esteem 3.40±0.53, appearance satisfaction 2.96±0.56, satisfaction with the major 3.80±0.61, and employment stress 2.23±0.75. Significant differences in employment stress according to general characteristics of subjects were observed in gender (t=7.40, p=.007), entering nursing college motivation (F=3.24, p=.023), and college life satisfaction (F=16.722, p<.001). Employment stress showed a negative correlation with self-esteem (r=-.433, p<.001), appearance satisfaction (r=-.307, p<.001), and satisfaction in major (r=-.534, p<.001). The satisfaction with the major (β=-.371, p<.001), self-esteem (β=-.166, p=.026), appearance satisfaction (β=-.132, p=.045), entering nursing college motivation (β=.163, p=.006), and gender (β=.131, p=.033) confirmed as a factors affecting the employment stress and accounted for 35.6% of the variance. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop employment-competency reinforcement programs to increase the level of satisfaction in the major, appearance satisfaction, and self-esteem to reduce the employment stress of nursing college students.
