  • Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy, which is commonly used as a biomaterial, is associated with a high elastic modulus and poor biocompatibility. This alloy presents a variety of problems on several areas. Therefore, the development of good non-toxic biocompatible biomaterials with a low elastic modulus is necessary. Particularly, hydroxyapatite (HA) is an attractive material for human tissue implantation. This material is widely used as artificial bone due to its good biocompatibility and similar composition to human bone. Many scientists have studied the fabrication of HA as a biomaterial. However, applications of bulk HA compact are hindered by the low strength of HA when it is sintered. Therefore, HA has been coated on Ti or Ti alloy to facilitate good bonding between tissue and the HA surface. However, there are many problems when doing this, such as the low bonding strength between HA and Ti due to the different thermal expansion coefficients and mechanical properties. In this study, a Ti-HA composite with a porous surface was successfully fabricated by pulse current activated sintering (PCAS) and a subsequent leaching process.

  • Ti-6Al-4V biomaterial is widely used as a bone alternative. However, Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy suffers from numerous problems such as a high elastic modulus and high toxicity. Therefore, non-toxic biomaterials with low elastic moduli need to be developed. Ti-HA(hydroxyapatite) composites were fabricated in the present work by pulsed current activated sintering (PCAS) at $1000^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa using mixed Ti and HA powders. The effects of HA content on the physical and mechanical properties of the sintered Ti-HA composites have been investigated. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis of the Ti-HA composites, including Ti-40 wt%HA in particular, revealed new phases, $Ti_{2}O$, CaO, $CaTiO_3$, and TixPy, formed by chemical reactions between Ti and HA during sintering. The hardness of the Ti-HA composites decreased with an increase in HA content. The corrosion resistance of these composites was observed to be an excellent candidate as a commercial Ti-6Al-4 V ELI alloy. A Ti-5 wt%HA composite fabricated by PCAS is recommended as a new biomaterial, because it offers good corrosion resistance, compressive strength, wear resistance, and biocompatibility, and a low Young's modulus.

  • Although rare, the treatment options for a medial collateral avulsion fracture during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) range from conservative management using a cast and orthosis to internal fixation using metal screws. Bioabsorbable suture anchors have been used to replace metal fixators with distinct advantages, such as biocompatibility, radiolucency, and unnecessary second removal surgery, but complications, such as osteolysis, have been reported. This paper reports a potential risk of an extensive osteolysis-related suture anchor fixation of a medial collateral ligament (MCL) avulsion fracture during TKA in conjunction with a literature review.

  • The demand for energy is steadily rising because of rapid population growth and improvements in living standards. Consequently, extensive research is being conducted worldwide to enhance the energy supply. Transpiration power generation technology utilizes the vast availability of water, which encompasses more than 70% of the Earth's surface, offering the unique advantage of minimal temporal and spatial constraints over other forms of power generation. Various principles are involved in water-based energy harvesting. In this study, we focused on explaining the generation of energy through the streaming potential within the generator component. The generator was fabricated using sugar cubes, PDMS, carbon black, CTAB, and DI water. In addition, a straightforward and rapid manufacturing method for the generator was proposed. The PDMS generator developed in this study exhibits high performance with a voltage of 29.6 mV and a current of 8.29 µA and can generate power for over 40h. This study contributes to the future development of generators that can achieve high performance and long-term power generation.

  • The locking compression plates-distal femur(LCP-DF) are being widely used for surgical management of the extra-articular complex fractures of the distal femur. They feature locking mechanism between the screws and the screw holes of the plate to provide stronger fixation force with less number of screws than conventional compression bone plate. However, their biomechanical efficacies are not fully understood, especially regarding the number of the screws inserted and their optimal configurations. In this study, we investigated effects of various screw configurations in the shaft and the condylar regions of the femur in relation to structural stability of LCP-DF system. For this purpose, a baseline 3-D finite element (FE) model of the femur was constructed from CT-scan images of a normal healthy male and was validated. The extra-articular complex fracture of the distal femur was made with a 4-cm defect. Surgical reduction with LCP-DF and bone screws were added laterally. To simulate various cases of post-op screw configurations, screws were inserted in the shaft (3~5 screws) and the condylar (4~6 screws) regions. Particular attention was paid at the shaft region where screws were inserted either in clustered or evenly-spaced fashion. Tied-contact conditions were assigned at the bone screws-plate whereas general contact condition was assumed at the interfaces between LCP-DF and bone screws. Axial compressive load of 1,610N(2.3 BW) was applied on the femoral head to reflect joint reaction force. An average of 5% increase in stiffness was found with increase in screw numbers (from 4 to 6) in the condylar region, as compared to negligible increase (less than 1%) at the shaft regardless of the number of screws inserted or its distribution, whether clustered or evenly-spaced. At the condylar region, screw insertion at the holes near the fracture interface and posterior locations contributed greater increase in stiffness (9~13%) than any other locations. Our results suggested that the screw insertion at the condylar region can be more effective than at the shaft during surgical treatment of fracture of the distal femur with LCP-DF. In addition, screw insertion at the holes close to the fracture interface should be accompanied to ensure better fracture healing.

  • Metals, ceramics and polymers are widely used as bioimplant materials. However, Ti and Ti alloys are widely used because of its high strength to weight ratio and good biocompatibility when implanted in the body. In this experiment, Ti alloys of Grade-4 (gr4), 0.2 wt % Fe, 0.5 wt % Fe and 2 wt % Fe were studied for their surface morphology and HAp forming ability on the metal substrate for different treatments. Intially, the samples were mechanically polished on silicone carbide paper (No.-2000). The polished samples were treated with 5M NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The NaOH treated samples were washed gently with distill water and dried at $40^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. The dried samples were heated in air at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The surface morphology of these samples were studied using SEM. The SEM studies showed network of pores in all samples. These samples were immersed in stimulated body fluids (SBF) kept at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for different periods over the length of 1 to 14 days. The apatite formation was confirmed on all Ti-alloys using EDAX.

  • Porcelain fused to metal crown has been used mostly over the last 50 years for restorations in dentistry. However, the patients' awareness of aesthetic aspect, biocompatibility and the problems such as an allergy to metals led to the growing interest in the 'metal free restoration'. In particular, the price of the precious metals that have been mainly used to date has risen drastically, which made them impossible to play their role as oral restorative materials anymore, and in addition, the PFM restoration has intrinsic problems of chipping and fracture. Therefore, the CAD/CAM has been drawing more attention than ever due to the popular needs for the material that is more aesthetic and stronger for restoration of the molar implant. Considerations in carrying out the full zirconia restoration are as follows: 1) strength, 2) combination work, 3) light penetrability, 4) treatment of cracks, 5) the color reproducibility of the block, 6) the abrasivity of antagonistic tooth, 7) low temperature degradation. In this presentation, the color reproducibility of the block will be discussed. One of the biggest reasons for avoiding the full zirconia restoration is that it is difficult to reproduce the natural color compared to the conventional PFM restoration. Thus, many clinicians show reluctance due to the exposure of the ugly block when the coloring on the surface is removed after occlusal adjustment. From the experience of using blocks by Zirkonzahn for more than 4 years, it is considered that these problems can be addressed to some degrees. Accordingly, how to make restorations that are well in harmony with surrounding prosthesis or natural teeth will be discussed.

  • The neutron activation inventories in reactor vessel and its internals, and bio-shield of a PWR nuclear power plant were calculated to evaluate the effect of impurity elements contained in the structural materials on the activation inventory. Carbon steel is, in this work, used as the reactor vessel material, stainless steel as the reactor vessel internals, and ordinary concrete as the bio-shield. For stainless steel and carbon steel, one kind of impurity concentration was employed, and for ordinary concrete five kinds were employed in this study using MCNP5 and FISPACT for the calculation of neutron flux and activation inventory, respectively. As the results, specific activities for the cases with impurity elements were calculated to be more than twice than those for the cases without impurity elements in stainless and carbon steel. Especially, the specific activity for the concrete material with impurity elements was calculated to be 30 times higher than that without impurity. Neutron induced reactions and activation inventories in each material were also investigated, and it is noted that major radioactive nuclide in steel material is Co-60 from cobalt impurity element, and, in concrete material, Co-60 and Eu-152 from cobalt and europium impurity elements, respectively. The results of this study can be used for nuclear decommissioning plan during activation inventory assessment and regulation, and it is expected to be used as a reference in the design phase of nuclear power plant, considering the decommissioning of nuclear power plants or nuclear facilities.

  • Objective : To present a criteria for acupuncture standardization, which will improve quality of acupuncture and secure safety, through studies of the biocompatibility of acupuncture. Methods : The acupunctures distributed in Korea were studied. The chemical composition, elasticity, and the solidity of the acupuncture's metal material was analyzed. Results & Conclusions : 1) The acupunctures distributed in Korea were all produced with ST304. Because acupuncture is used on a living body, the corrosion resistance, allergy proof and magnetism of the metal material should be considered. In this point, STS316 stainless steel would be more suitable than ST304. 2) The elasticity and solidity of the acupuncture's metal material distributed in Korea meet the medical instrument standards of the Korea Food and Drug Administration. But since the standards are only roughly outlined, the criteria should be realized and standardized.

  • In order to assess the accumulation levels of cadmium and other metals(Zn, Cu, Ca and Fe) in fish bodies, an experimental study was performed by raising fry of "Oryzias latipes" in the water containing cadmium 0.03 ppm, cadmium 0.03 ppm + zinc 0.03 ppm and in the tap water(control group) were made. In the results the concentration of Cd in fish bodies were increased with advancing exposure time in Cd 0.03 ppm treated group and 0.03 ppm + Zn 0.03 ppm treated group, but there was no significantly different between both groups with Cd concentration in each week. The concentration of Zn in fish bodies was no changed with advancing exposure time in control group and Cd 0.03 ppm + Zn 0.03 ppm treated group were significantly different from control and Cd 0.03 ppm treated group. The concentration of Cu, Ca and Fe in fish bodies were increased with advancing exposure time, and control group was higher than any other groups. Simple correlation analysis showed that the positive correlation between Cd and Zn, Cu and Ca, Fe, Ca and Fe, but Cd was negative correlation with Cu, Ca and Fe. In conclusion, we investigated a tendency that the concentration of Cd and Zn in fish bodies tended to increase with the lapse of time, but Cu was unchanged and those of Ca and Fe were decreased in administrating the trace dose of Cd and Zn in water. in water.
