This study aims to provide basic data for investigating the phenotypic traits and growth characteristics of Korean native black goats. The Jangsu and Tongyoung strains were shown to have black hair, while the Dangjin strain was shown to have black or dark brown long hair. Only the Tongyeong strain was found to have no wattle and one goat each from the females and males of the Dangjin strain was found to have no horns. The lengths of the ears and tails were similar for the female and male goats, while the lengths of horns and beards were longer in the male goats. The birth weight was 2 kg on average, with that of male goats tending to be slightly heavier than that of the females. Weights at the weaning period were found to be slightly heavier for the males. Also, at 12 months, the weights of the male goats by strain were shown to be heavier than that of the females. The body length and depth by strain were found to be higher for the male goats, while no differences in the chest width and girth between the strains or gender were found. These findings are expected to be used as a basis for differentiating between native and crossbred Korean black goat strains and for improving Korean native black goats.
The cache size tends to grow in the embedded processor as technology scales to smaller transistors and lower supply voltages. However, larger cache size demands more energy. Accordingly, the ratio of the cache energy consumption to the total processor energy is growing. Many cache energy schemes have been proposed for reducing the cache energy consumption. However, these previous schemes are concerned with one side for reducing the cache energy consumption, dynamic cache energy only, or static cache energy only. In this paper, we propose a hybrid scheme for reducing dynamic and static cache energy, simultaneously. for this hybrid scheme, we adopt two existing techniques to reduce static cache energy consumption, drowsy cache technique, and to reduce dynamic cache energy consumption, way-prediction technique. Additionally, we propose a early wake-up technique based on program counter to reduce penalty caused by applying drowsy cache technique. We focus on level 1 data cache. The hybrid scheme can reduce static and dynamic cache energy consumption simultaneously, furthermore our early wake-up scheme can reduce extra program execution cycles caused by applying the hybrid scheme.
Growth curves were estimated for 1083 female Korean cattle raised in Daekwanryeong branch, National Livestock Research Institute (NLRI). Comparisons were made among various growth curve models for goodness of fit for the growth of the cows. Estimated growth curve functions were $W_t=370.2e^{-2.208e^{-0.00327t}$ for Gompertz model, for von Bertalanffy model, and $W_t=341.2(1+5.652e^{-0.00524t})^{-1}$ for Logistic model. Ages at inflection estimated from Gompertz model, von Bertalanffy model and Logistic model were 242.2 days, 191.5 days, and 330.5 days respectively, body weight at inflection were 136kg, 115kg, and 170kg, and daily gain at inflection were 0.445kg, 0.451kg, and 0.446kg. The predicted weights by ages from Gompertz model, von Bertalanffy model, and Logistic model were onsistently overestimated at birth weight and underestimated at 36 month weight. The von Bertalanffy model which had a variable point of inflection fit the data best.
This study was conducted to estimate heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations among body weight and 10 different body measurements on the basis of the data from Korean cows at Korean Cattle Improvement Areas from 1979 to 1995. Results obtained are as follows. 1. Heritabilities of body weights at birth, weaning, 12 months and 27 months of age estimated were 0.208${\pm}$0.038, 0.457${\pm}$0.073, 0.476${\pm}$0.082 and 0.227${\pm}$0.040, respectively. Heritabilities of body measurements at 12 and 27 months of age estimated were 0.326 and 0.242 for withers height, 0.486 and 0.110 for body length and 0.462 and 0.170 for chest girth2. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among body weight and ten body measurements at 12 months of age were positive ranging from 0.223 to 0.999. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among body weight and ten body measurements at 27 months of age were positive ranging from 0.290 to 0.883.
This study was conducted to determine the differences in the growth and milk production performance of Holstein Crossbreds (Korean Native Cattle(♀)${\times}$Holstein(♂)) and Korean Native Cattle produced at the Livestock Experiment Station of the Office of Rural Developement from 1973 to 1978. The number of heifers and cows used in this experiment were 15 head of Korean Native Cattle and 11 head pf Holstein Crossbreds Cattle. Body weight and body measurements were taken at birth, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months of age, however, body measurements were not taken at birth. Milk production was checked from the 11 th day to 180th day after calving. The data was analyzed using the least square procedure in order to estimate the effect of the mating group, year of birth, calving season and parity. The results obtained from this study were as follows: 1. The body weights of the Holstein Crossbreds were heavier than the body weights of purebred Korean Native Cattle. The body weight of the Holstein Crossbreds averaged 28.09kg, 146.64kg, 254.48kg, 392.04kg and 454.46kg at birth, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months of age, respectively. However, the body weights of purebreds Korean Native Cattle averaged 22.45kg, 132.82kg, 220.68kg, 363.54kg and 365.54kg at the same ages. 2. The year of birth affected on body weight at each point during the growing stage, except birth, heifers born in the spring and autumn were heavier than the others, but calving season did not affect on body weight during the growing stage except at birth and 6 months. 3. Parity showed significant differences on body weight in the growing stage. Calves from the 5th parity had a tendency to be heavier than the other calves. 4. The year of birth, calving season and parity at calving had no affect on the change of body measurements, but the wither height, hip height, chest depth, chest girth and hip width were significantly greater in the Holstein Crossbreds at 24 months of age. 5. Mating groups had a significant affect on milk production during the growing stage. Year of birth and calving season did not affect milk production, but parity was significant from 11 days after calving. 6. The least-squares means used to determine the daily milk production were 3.60 and 8.26kg/day for Korean Native Cattle and the Holstein Crossbreds, respectively.
The change of external/internal factors of the cell rquires specific biological functions to maintain life. Such functions encourage particular genes to jnteract/regulate each other in multiple ways. Accordingly, we applied a linear decomposition model IFSA, which derives hidden variables, called the 'expression mode' that corresponds to the functions. To interpret gene interaction/regulation, we used a cross-correlation method given an expression mode. Linear decomposition models such as principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) were shown to be useful in analyzing high dimensional DNA microarray data, compared to clustering methods. These methods assume that gene expression is controlled by a linear combination of uncorrelated/indepdendent latent variables. However these methods have some difficulty in grouping similar patterns which are slightly time-delayed or asymmetric since only exactly matched Patterns are considered. In order to overcome this, we employ the (IFSA) method of [1] to locate phase- and shut-invariant features. Membership scoring functions play an important role to classify genes since linear decomposition models basically aim at data reduction not but at grouping data. We address a new function essential to the IFSA method. In this paper we stress that IFSA is useful in grouping functionally-related genes in the presence of time-shift and expression phase variance. Ultimately, we propose a new approach to investigate the multiple interaction information of genes.
This study investigated the growth characteristics of four strains of newly developed synthetic Korean native commercial chickens (KNCs). We investigated a suitable growth curve model in KNCs and estimated the number of days to reach a 2 kg market weight. Body weight was measured at 2-week intervals from birth to 12 weeks of age. The growth curves were estimated using von Berteralanffy, Gompertz, and logistic functions. The results showed that males were significantly heavier than females at all ages, but there were no significant differences in body weight between strains, except at birth and 2 and 6 weeks of age. The coefficients of determination and adjusted determination of growth function had high goodness-of-fit (97.4~99.7). Of the growth curve parameters, the mature weight and growth ratio were higher in males than in females, but the maturity rate was similar in males and females. The inflection point occurred at approximately 7 weeks of age for females and 8 to 9 weeks of age for males. The weights estimated from the growth curve functions almost agreed with the actual weights, except for male weights estimated using the von Bertalanffy function. The coefficients of determination of the regression equations for weight to age were 0.9583 to 0.9746. The 8- and 10-week-old body weights estimated using the regression equation, and the 12-week-old weight estimated using the logistic function were most similar to the actual weight. Using these models, the estimated age of KNCs to reach 2 kg was 62.0~64.6 days for males and 74.9~78.6 days for females.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the genetic characteristics of body weight by growth periods for Hanwoo. A total of 1,736 records were used for body weight. The data for body weights were collected from 1990 to 2000 in Daekwanryong branch, National Livestock Research Institute(NLRI). Estimates of (co)variance components were obtained by derivative-free Restricted Maximum Likelihood (DF-REML). The results are summarized as follows; The means for the weights were 25.60, 79.31, 98.91, 145.40, 283.26, 392.32, 545.65kg at birth, 3, 4, 6, 12, 18, 24month postpartum, respectively. The effects of calving year-season were significant for the milk yield of cow. Heritability estimates of direct genetic effects for birth weight were 0.54(all), 0.52(female), 0.36(male) in modelⅠ, 0.45(all), 0.41(female), 0.24(male) in modelⅡ, and heritabilities estimates of direct genetic effects for 4 month(weaning) weight were 0.47(all), 0.33(female), 0.28(male) in modelⅠ, 0.38(all), 0.21(female), 0.21(male) in modelⅡ. Heritability estimates for male and female data differed from those for combined data. The estimates became smaller for the body weights at 12 month or later(0.13~0.05). The heritabilities of average daily gain were smaller than those for body weights, but showed that the similar pattern to body weights.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a high protein diet containing barley on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. A total of fifty six [(Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire${\times}$Duroc)] pigs (85.08 kg in average initial body weight) were used for a 6-week study. Dietary treatments included 1) Basal diet (CON) and 2) High protein diet with barley 5% (HB5). During the entire test periods, there were no significant differences in Average daily gain (ADG), Average daily feed intake (ADFI) and gain/feed ratio between treatments (p>0.05). The b value of M. logissimus dorsi muscle color was significantly increased in CON fed pigs compared to pigs fed the HB5 diet (p<0.05). The water holding capacity (WHC) was higher in HB5 than CON fed pigs (p<0.05). Also, drip loss was significantly decreased in HB5 compared to CON fed pigs (p<0.05). Backfat thickness, live weight, cold carcass weight, dressing, and carcass grade were not significantly affected by either treatment (p>0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that a high protein diet with 5% barley affects meat color, WHC and drip loss in finishing pigs.
This experiment was carried out to find out the effect of piglet anemia prevention of the chelated iron with amino acids fed to the sows during the late gestation and early lactation as compared with oral iron administration, intramuscular iron-dextran injection and control (receiving no iron supplement) groups. Twenty crossbred sows (Landrace ${\times}$ Large White) bred purebred Large White boars were used to evaluate four treatments. The results obtained in this experiment were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences among the average body weights at birth in all the treatment groups. But the average body weight at 15 days of age was heaviest in the chelated iron group. At 35 days of age, the control group was lightest in the treatment groups. 2. The survival rates at weaning were not recognized significantly among all the treatment groups. 3. At birth and 15 days of age, the levels of hemoglobin, red blood cell and hematocrit of the chelated iron group were higher (P<.05) than those of the control group. But at 35 days of age, they were not recognized significantly.
