  • To improve the relatively low economic efficiency of the Korean native pig, the Korean National Institute of Animal Science developed a novel pig breed, the Woori black pig (W), by crossing Korean native and Duroc (D) pigs. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of W as a terminal sire on growth performance, body shape, and retail cut yield of crossbred pigs. By using a completely randomized design, 32 crossbred pigs were allotted to one of two treatment groups based on terminal sire. The two groups were LYD [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × D sire] and LYW [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × W sire]. The experimental assessments were conducted over 53 days. The terminal sire breed had no significant effect on body weight (BW) at d 53, or on BW gain, average daily gain, or days to reach a 90 kg body weight. Moreover, there were no significant differences in body length, body height, or chest depth between the two groups. However, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in backfat thickness between the LYD (17.29 mm) and LYW (18.96 mm) groups. Loin yield of crossbred pigs in the LYW group (13.11%) was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that in the LYD group (13.85%). By contrast, the Boston butt yield was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the LYW group (8.99%) than in the LYD group (8.21%). In conclusion, these results suggest crossbred pigs sired by a Woori black pig had growth performance, shape, and retail cut yield (except loin yield) Ed. Note: I assume the lower loin yield is a negative factor so I included this wording. similar to those sired by a Duroc pig. The results showed no overall negative effect Ed. Note: I assume the lower loin yield is a negative factor so I used this wording. on crossbred offspring, indicating the suitability of the Woori black pig as a terminal sire.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of the black soldier fly (bsf) larvae on growth performance, carcass rate, and fatty acid profile of chicken meat in broiler chicks. Four hundred eighty 1-d-old broilers (Ross 308) were distributed into 3 treatments with 4 pens at 30 birds per replicate. Treatments were corn-soybean meal based broiler diet (control) and the basal diet replaced with bsf at the level of 3 and 6% respectively. Viability was not different significantly. Body weight gain was higher in control than other treatments. Feed intake was not statistically different of treatments. Feed conversion ratio was lower in control than other treatments. Relative weight of breast meat was significantly increased in all treated groups than in control. But, another relative weights of chicken meat cuts (thigh, wing, neck, back) were not significantly different among the groups. In conclusion, it could be suggested that dietary supplementation of black soldier flylarvae could beneficially improved the performance on broiler.

  • This study examined the washing conditions for high-quality solar salt. The salinity of the washing water was set to 5 % to prevent yield loss, and the temperatures of the washing water were 5, 10, 17.5, and 20 ℃. After washing the solar salt, the moisture content, salinity, insoluble matter, and sandy powder were measured from the solar salt. In addition, the color properties, L*[lightness], a*[redness], b*[yellowness], and yield were measured. The moisture content of the salt showed a tendency to increase when the temperature of the washing water was above 10 ℃, and the salinity and yield tended to decrease as the temperature of the washing water was high. The amount of insoluble matter decreased with decreasing temperature of the washing water. In the case of sandy powder, the highest value was 0.67 % at a washing water temperature of 5 ℃, and the value was 0.57 % under the other temperature conditions. Regarding the color properties, the b* [yellowness] of the color of the solar salt increased when the washing water temperature was high. This appeared to decrease the appearance quality. According to the above results, a washing water temperature above 10 ℃ was appropriate. The development of design factors of a high-quality solar salt production system is expected with experiments to define the drying conditions after the washing process.

  • Effects of several different petroleum fractions (LGO, HGO, VGO, Diesel oil, SP(E), HGO-wax, L/M-wax), stepwise addition of calculated amounts of HGO at defined intervals, recycling of spent media on cell growth of Candida tropicalis KIST 351 were studied using $2.5{\ell}$ fermenter by batch process. In addition, continuous cultivation of the yeast was also performed in the light of biomass production using $28{\ell}$ fermenter with LGO. 1) Cell concentration, yield on the basis of gas oil and n-paraffin with the petroleum fractions were in the range of $11{\sim}15g/{\ell}$, $10{\sim}12%$ and $77{\sim}82%$, respectively. 2) By stepwise addition of the gas oil, cell concentration and yield on the oil were increased up to 18.9 g/land 13%, respectively. 3) Spent medium slowed emulsifying ability of hydrocarbon and stimulating effect on the cell growth. Without additional supplementation of $Mg^{++}$ up to 20% of spent medium could be reused, while by adding of the $Mg^{++}$, 50% of medium could be recycled. 4) Optimum condition of continuous cultivation for biomass production was attained at the dilution rate of $D=0.1{\sim}0.125\;hr^{-1}$. Maximum yield coefficient on consumed n-paraffin was 0.94 at $D=0.1\;hr^{-1}$, however, 24% of supplied n-paraffin in the media was not utilized at this dilution rate.

  • Transglucosidase (TG) from Aspergillus niger was immobilized on various carriers by several immobilization methods such as ionic binding, adsorption, entrapment, covalent linkage and metal chelation to improve the process performance. The covalent linkage with CNBr-activated sepharose 4B was found as the best method for immobilization of TG based on the immobilization yield which was 61.3%. The immobilization through ionic binding and adsorption gave 33.1% and 22.5% yield respectively but both methods were not selected due to lower yield than covalent linkage using CNBr-Sepharose 4B. Internal diffusion resistance in beads developed by entrapment were not suitable factor in producing final target products. Covalent linkage of TG on magnesium silicate, silica gel and glass bead and metal chelation method didn't result in higher yield than the selected one, either.

  • An understanding of potential lumber cutting yields may lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber in wood industry. Computer simulations of rough-mill operations require a lumber database as input to give reasonable estimates of such yields. The lumber database must contain detailed information regarding the location and type of defects, and then all manufacturing sequences can be tested with the same raw material. However, no suitable lumber database with mapped defects exists for Korean wood industry. In this study lumber databases of Pinus densiflora S. et Z and Quercus acutissima which are the main Korean domestic species were developed to prepare for coming era of "utilization of domestic species" in the near future. These databases were put into lumber cut-up simulation model(gang-rip-first simulator) to investigate the part yields. Gang-rip first simulation showed average part yields of 44.75% and 63.10% for Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora lumber database developed, respectively. In most cases process set-up of fixed blade best feed showed the best part yields and the level of acceptable defects could not make significant differences in part yields.

  • Crease cut pearled baller was studied in relation to product and quality, and processing electricity requirement with various pearling yields. 1. Increasing the pearling rate resulted in increasing broken grain of cut-Polished barley. 2. The range of length/width ratio in cut-polished baller were from 2.09 to 2.13 and those of pearled barley were 1.36, respectively. 3. Cut-polished barley required more electricity than pearled barley at the same polishing rate. As pearling rate increased at first polishing before cutting, total electricity requirement of cut-polished barley reduced significantly.

  • The algal bloom, resulting from eutrophication, has caused serious water quality problems in river and lake. Therefore, it has to be removed by any means including physicochemical or biological treatment for preserving water quality. This study was conducted to investigate the microalgae removal and energy production using combined electro-flotation and anaerobic hydrogen fermentation processes. The result showed that algae removal efficiency based on chlorophyll a removal increased with the current. At a current of 0.6A, the maximum microalgae removal efficiency of 95.9% was achieved. The treatability of anaerobic hydrogen fermentation was investigated to recover energy from microalgae removed by electro-flotation. The ultimate hydrogen yields of algae before and after ultrasonic pretreatment were 17.3 and 61.1 ml $H_2/g$ dcw(dry cell weight), respectively. The ultrasonic pretreatment of algae led to 3.4-fold higher $H_2$ production due to the increase of hydrolysis rate.
