This study was to investigate the physiological activities of bioconversion soybean embryo extract and the effects of sleeping pack containing extract on skin. The aglycone isoflavones of the soybean embryo extract bioconversed with pectinase were identified by HPLC. in vitro tests showed that they were non-toxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-melanin and anti-aging activity. After 4 weeks of human body application with the sleeping pack using extract, the skin surface roughness and eye wrinkles were so improved by low stimulation that the sleeping pack containing bioconversion soybean embryo extract has a positive effect on the skin. We confirmed that the bioconversion soybean embryo extract was effective in enhancing the physiological activity and was useful as a cosmetic material of various formulations.
Effect of various factors on the phenol degradation by activated sludge immobilized with the photocrosslinked resin were investigated. The optimum pH on the degradation of phenol in both free and immobilized activated sludge was 7. A higher rate of phenol degradation was observed when a bead size, vas smaller. The phenol degradation in the free activated sludge was inhibited at the 3000 mg/L of phenol, while that in the immobilized activated sludge was maintained at the same concentration for 28 hrs without an inhibition.
Natural antimicrobial substance from peanut (Arachis hypogaea) shells was isolated and structurally elucidated. Peanut shells were extracted with methanol (MeOH) and concentrated in vacuo, MeOH extract was solvent-fractionated with ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and various buffer to obtain EtOAc acidic, neutral, and phenolic fractions. EtOAc neutral fraction, which showed antimicrobial activity, was purified through silica gel adsorption column, Sephadex LH-20 column, ODS column, and high performance liquid chromatographies, and its active substance was isolated and identified as pratensein (3',5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone) by spectroscopic methods of proton-nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and nuclear overhauser enhancement spectroscopy.
A white rot fungus as a microbial source producing bioflocculant was isolated from rotted leaves and identified as Pestalotiopsis sp. M01. The flocculating activity and productivity of Pestan produced by Pestalotiopsis sp. KCTC 8637P was determined by using Czapek-Dox medium as the inorganic salt source. The flocculating activity was highest at 3% sucrose and 0.3% $KN0_3$, pH 7, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Whilst, the strain growth was highest at 3% sucrose, 0.3% TEX><$KN0_3$, pH 5, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively.

This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of recycled wastewater and surfactant above CMC(critical micelle concentration) on the removal rate of PAHs in bench-scale slurry bioreactor. Kinetic parameters based on zero order and first order kinetic models were estimated. The first order model was able to describe the removal of phenanthrene and pyrene with high correlation coefficients. Addition of recycled wastewater could enhance the removal rates of phenanthrene and pyrene. Addition of surfactant above CMC could enhance desorption rate and removal rate of phenanthrene and pyrene.
The biodegradation of ($C^{14}$)phenanthrene was studied in water and soil-water systems with nonionic surfactants and biosurfactant : polyoxyethylene alkyl ester($C_{17}$$H_33$COO($C_2$$H_4$O)nH) and sophorolipid. The extents of so1ubilization and biodegradation were monitored by radiotracer technique. Experimental results showed that surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration were toxic to the phenanthrene-degrading bacteria in soil or active sludge and the presence of surfactant micelles inhibited mineralization of PAHs. Solubility and bioavailibility of phenanthrene in water and soil-water system were enhanced by mixed surfactants system. The optimum water content and hydrogen concentration were 30% (w/v) , pH 7, respectively.
We studied degradation effects of hydrophobic substrate such as kerosene and diesel by adding a biosurfactant originated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa F722 and chemical surfactants (Tween 80 and detergent) with aeration. The surface tensions of the biosurfactant, Tween 80 and detergent were 30mN/m, 39mN/m and 31mN/m, respectively. When the concentration of biosurfactant added in C-medium was 0.01 and 0.15%(w/v), the ratios of hydrocarbon degradation were 94.3% and 94.2% respectively. It was 6.2%(w/v) higher than when the concentrations of added biosurfactant were 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2%. The degradation ratios of the chemical surfactants (Tween 80 and detergent) were 94.5% and 93.5% respectively. The effects of the biosurfactant and chemical surfactants were similar on the degradation ratio in mixtures of kerosene and diesel. However, the population of viable p. aeruginosa F722 at the end of the cultivation period was twice as higher in the biosurfactant than that in the chemical surfactant. We also studied the effect of aeration (0.5vvm) on the degradation ratio. The biosurfactant addition experiment was conducted with 0.5vvm air, 35$^{\circ}C$, 150rpm, pH 8.0, 3days, 1.0% (w/v) substrate. When p. aeruginosa F722 and 0.15%(w/v) biosurfactant were added, the degradation ratio of hydrocarbon was 94.8%. Without p. aeruginosa F722, it was 68%. Thus, with aeration, the degradation ratio of hydrocarbon was increased by 26.8%. In addition, the cultivation time was shortened by 1/3. The degradation ratios of hydrocarbon in shaking culture (cultivation time; 3days) and stationary culture (cultivation time; 10days) were 94.8 and 93.7% respectively. Thus, the addition of biosurfactant and aeration enhanced the degradation of hydrocarbon originated kerosene and diesel.
