  • One of the most challenging and encouraging applications of state-of-the-art technology is the field of traffic control systems. It combines techniques from the areas of telecommunications and computer science to establish traffic information and various assistance services. The support of the system requires a moving objects database system (MODB) that stores moving objects efficiently and performs spatial or temporal queries with time conditions. In this paper, we propose schemes to distribute an index nodes of trajectory based on spatio-temporal proximity and the characteristics of moving objects. The scheme predicts the extendible MBB of nodes of index through the prediction of moving object, and creates a parallel trajectory index. The experimental evaluation shows that the proposed schemes give us the performance improvement by 15%. This result makes an improvement of performance by 50% per one disk.

  • Location-Based services that collect location information for moving object and utilize in real life are being used in many aspects by the development of wireless network technology. Accordingly, new index structures are required to efficiently retrieve the consecutive location of moving objects. This paper addresses algorithms that make index structure by using Douglas-Peucker Algorithm and process range query efficiently on moving objects trajectories. Our algorithms are going to make smaller size of index structure and process more efficiently.

  • Since a NAND-flash memory is able to keep data during electricity-off and has small cost to store data per bytes, it is widely used on hand-held devices. It is necessary to use an index in order to process mass data effectively on the flash memory. However, since the flash memory requires high cost for a write operation and does not support an overwrite operation, it is possible to reduce the performance of the index when the disk based index is exploited. In this paper, we implement the fixed grid file index and evaluate the performance of the index on various conditions. To do this, we measure the average processing time by the ratio of query operations and update operations. We also the compare the processing times of the flash memory with those of the magnetic disk.

  • Since a NAND-flash memory is able to store mass data in a small sized chip and consumes low power, it is exploited on various hand-held devices, such as a smart phone and a sensor node, etc. To process efficiently mass data stored in the flash memory, it is required to use an index. However, since the write operation of the flash memory is slower than the read operation and an overwrite operation is not supported, the usage of existing index schemes degrades the performance of the index. In this paper, we survey the previous researches of index schemes for the flash memory and classify the researches by the methods to solve problems. We also present the performance factor to be considered when we design the index scheme on the flash memory.

  • A Home Location Register(HLR) database system manages each subscriber's location information, which continuously changes in a cellular network. For this purpose, the HLR database system provides table management, index management, and backup management facilities. In this thesis, I propose using a two-level index method for the mobile directory number(MDN) as a suitable method and a chained bucket hashing method for the electronic serial number(ESN). Both the MDN and the ESN are used as keys in the HLR database system. I also propose an efficient backup method that takes into account the characteristics of HLR database transactions. The retrieval speed and the memory usage of the two-level index method are better than those of the T-tree index method. The insertion and deletion overhead of the chained bucket hashing method is less than that of the modified linear hashing method. In the proposed backup method, I use two kinds of dirty flags in order to solvethe performance degradation problem caused by frequent registration-location operations. I also propose using additional attributes in the HLR database scheme for location information secrecy as a suitable security method.

  • Recently, many XML document management systems using the advantage of RDBMS have been actively developed for the storage, processing and retrieval of XML documents. However, fractional pattern-matching query such as the LIKE operations cannot take the advantage of the index of RDBMS because these operations have deteriorated retrieval performance through its inefficient comparison processing. The hierarchical XML storage technique which stores XML documents in RDBMS efficiently, and the path inverted index technique are proposed in this paper. It regards the element of an XML document as a keyword, and focuses on organizing a posting file with path identifiers and sequences to reduce the retrieval time of path based query. Through simulations, our methods have shown about 60% better performance than the conventional method using RDBMS in searching.

  • Inverted index structures have become the most efficient data structure for high performance indexing of large text collections, especially online index maintenance, In-Place and merge-based index structures are the two main competing strategies for index construction in dynamic search environments. In the above-mentioned two strategies, a contiguity of posting information is the mainstay of design for online index maintenance and query time. Whereas with the emergence of new storage device(SSD, SCRAM), those do not consider a contiguity of posting information in the design of index structures because of its superiority such as low access latency and I/O throughput speeds. However, SSD(Solid State Drive) is not well suited for traditional inverted structures due to the poor random write throughput in practical systems. In this paper, we propose the new efficient online index structure(SPM) for SSD that significantly reduces the query time and improves the index maintenance performance.

  • Recently, a lot of index techniques for storing and querying XML document have been studied so far and many researches of them used coordinate-based methods. But update operation and query processing to express structural relations among elements, attributes and texts make a large burden. In this paper, we propose an efficient BitmapInvert index technique based on Relative Position Coordinate (RPC). RPC has good preformance even if there are frequent update operations because it represents relationship among parent node and left, right sibling nodes. BitmapInvert index supports tort query with bitwise operations and does not casue serious performance degradations on update operations using PostUpdate algerian. Overall, the performance could be improved by reduction of the number of times for traversing nodes.

  • Using object relationship table, this study proposes an efficient indexing technique for accessing both aggregation and inheritance hierarchies in object- oriented databases. This indexing technique uses the information on the aggregation and inheritance relationship between classes and the information on referencing instances as meta data. As a result, the technique makes it possible to effectively evaluates various queries navigating between tables. The study compares the proposed technique with the existing indexing techniques and discusses its useful- ness. It also provides the result of simulating its performance in terms of storage and retrieval cost.

  • The indexing languages and techniques were ~ u ~ e y e d for Korean textual databases, and retrieval effectivenesses of two indexing languages were evaluated in an online searching experiment. It was found that most of the Korean textual databases surveyed employ natural language indexing by either an automatic or a manual method, and that natural language indexing may outperform controlled language indexing if appropriate search strategies are employed.
