Coexistence of Everything that Exists -An Imagination about Love of Korean American Immigrant Nakchung THUN (존재하는 모든 것들의 공존 -미주 이민자 전낙청의 사랑에 관한 한 상상)

  • This paper aims to identify the key features of the novel writing of Korean American immigrants and their meaning as one aspect of movement and contact occuring in the early modern period. The late return of the novels written by Nakcheong THUN in the 1930s is significant in that it restored ideas on the diversity of early modern mobility and confronted the history and culture of immigrants who were excluded from records and memories. Not only are these novels a product of the phenomenon of immigration, but they have also created a crack in the dichotomous perceptions of domination and subordination, center and periphery by envisioning it as a space that creates new history, culture, institutions and values. These novels treat the free love of intellectual, emotional, and ethical figures as a central event, demystifying Western free love, and at the same time, a society divided by various identities including class, race, and gender. The novels by Nakchung THUN visualize the active exchange between the immigrant and the indigenous community through the character of Jack, and imagines the heterotopia as a place where not for the immigrants' utopia, but for everyone's coexists. These novels have declared a kind of memory war on the subordinate and marginalized contact zones. The contact zones of the immigration area had been a place for experiencing extreme conflicts and discords, and at the same time, it has served as a place where various groups and communities are connected. The contact zones were common areas of solidarity and creation before being subject to division and occupation. The contact zones are far from the border or borderlands, so it is not a fixed and immutable deadlock. As a world free from central domination the contact zones have been a space that preoccupied history and culture through various encounters, and have been a community.

  • 본 연구에서는 실감공간에 대한 청소년의 반응을 바탕으로 향후 기술 개발 방향에 대한 조언을 하기 위하여 총 41명의 학생을 대상으로 소집단 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 시행하였다. 청소년들이 자주 사용하는 미디어의 종류와 이유, 미디어 사용에서 느끼는 불편한 점, 그들이 상상하는 미래형 미디어의 모습과 실감공간기술에 대한 반응을 묻고, 그 결과를 유형화하였다. 연구 결과 포커스 그룹 인터뷰 참가자들은 자주 사용하는 미디어로 휴대폰과, 인터넷, MP3, 활자 매체 등을 꼽았다. 활자매체의 장점으로는 높은 몰입도를, 인터넷의 장점으로는 편리한 인터페이스, 핸드폰의 장점으로는 이동성이 제기되었다. 그러나 핸드폰과 관련하여 청소년들은 불편한 인터페이스, 작은 용량과 빨리 닳는 배터리를 단점으로 지적했고 뉴미디어 공통적으로 느린 속도, 미디어에 의존하게 되는 강박증적 증세, 사생활 침해의 문제와 대인관계유지에 있어서의 부작용, 높은 이용료 등의 문제가 제기되었다. 이들은 일상생활이 미디어 이용에 의해 방해받고 있으며 미디어 이용으로 인해 불필요한 '필요'가 생겨나고 있다고 지적했다. 미래형 미디어에 대한 바람은 기존 미디어의 단점이 보완, 개선되는 측면에서 제시되었다. 더욱 편리해진 인터페이스와 기존 뉴미디어의 장점이 접목되는 방향의 미디어 통합도 요청되었다. 그러나 실감공간기술에 대해서는 긍정적인 반응보다는 부정적인 반응을 수적으로 우세해 주목을 끌었다. 진화된 형태의 미디어에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 보일 것이라는 예상과는 달리 실감공간기술이 기존의 면 대 면 대인관계를 파괴할 것이며 사생활을 침해하고 건강에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 것이라는 등의 거부감과 공포를 구체적으로 피력한 것이다. 이러한 두려움(fear)은 선행연구에 따르면 사람들이 새로운 매체에 대해 갖는 두려움과 이로부터 발생하는 두려움에 대한 대응은 혁명적 변화의 가능성을 억압하여 기존의 질서와 새로운 질서가 공존하는 기간을 늘림으로써 미시적 차원에서 단절적 역사의 경험을 완화시키는 기능을 하는 것으로 해석된다. 따라서 연구 결과 나타난 실감공간 기술에 대한 부정적인 반응도 이러한 맥락에서 해석될 수 있다. 즉 인터뷰 참가자들이 피력한 두려움은 뉴미디어 도입과 함께 반복되는 현상이며 이것은 새로운 현상이 아니다. 두려움은 기존 질서와 새로운 질서가 공존하는 기간을 연장시킴으로써 완충재로서 기능한다. 따라서 향후 기술 개발과 확산 과정에서 실감공간기술의 긍정적인 면모에 대한 적극적인 홍보가 필요하며 수용자들의 바람과 신기술에 대한 공포감을 이해하고 이를 기술 개발 방향 설정에 적극적으로 반영하는 자세가 요청된다고 하겠다.

  • This paper reveals the double meaning of the temporal background and spatial background on Shimchungga. Its temporal background is the fictional and romantic time of the story, while the time of the weary lives of ordinary people is realistic and historical in the late Joseon Dynasty. The spatial background has a dual meaning that reminds us of the ancient capital of China and Seoul of the Joseon Dynasty. Namgyeong, a spatial background is fictional and romantic where the daughter of the public, Simcheong, becomes "The mother of all the people." In addition, Namgyeong reminds us of Seoul, the capital of Joseon Dynasty. Shimchungga is based on the customs and manners of the late Joseon Dynasty, and it is embodied by borrowing time and space from China. It is recalled Joseon's as backgrounds of China First of all, Namgyeong on Shimchungga is the ultimate attraction of the free imagination of the ordinary people as well as Shin, Jae-hyo in the late Joseon Dynasty.

  • The film has always reflected the culture of the era based on reality and imagination. The visual effect in the film has mainly played a role of expressing the reality more realistically or recognizing the virtual as reality. This study examines the meaning and the effect of fantasy realism through Oasis of Lee Chang-dong. Fantastic realism has separated the reality from the imaginary space by using a dual meaning tool that affects the time and space in the film and reflects the human desire and desire to see. It was also reproduced in the real world through the medium of pigeons. In addition, it separates visualized space from non-visualized space in film narrative structure, separation of real and unreal space, segregation of consciousness and unconscious space, and separation of reality and reality space into power structure. With the development of technology, the image of the yellow image comes closer to us like reality, which will express the space of unconsciousness that we could not think of.

A Concept Analysis on Creative Zone in Public Libraries as Co-working Space (코워킹 스페이스로서의 공공도서관 무한창조공간 개념 분석)

  • This study suggested that the concept of creative zone raised by the national interest of the 'Creation' should be extended in public libraries. The concept of creative zone in public libraries was analyzed on the basis of 'Con-creative structure ontology' by Rombach. As we understand a creator and creation as the relation of 'subject'-'object', The current concept of 'Creation' dilutes the possibility of 'Autogenese' that all beings as a subject possess. But 'Con-creative Structure' describes the process of 'Autogenese' through sharing and mutual communication of all beings. The formation process of Con-creative Structure corresponds to the philosophy of the library that supports the self-growth through communication and sharing. 'Co-working Space' is more suitable for the substantive image of Con-creativity than 'Makerspace'. Therefore, this study analyzed circumstances of creative zone in public libraries and Co-working Space in business areas and provided the conceptive and substantive modeling for Co-working Space in public libraries.

A Study on the Spatiotemporal Interpretation of Derek Jarman's Garden (데릭 저먼의 정원에 대한 시공간적(時空間的) 해석)

  • This study looks at spatiotemporal theories regarding the pluralism of time inherent in garden space, and attempts to establish spatiotemporal theories suitable for garden spaces. Based on the established theories, this study analyzes the intimacy of garden spaces by focusing on the objective and subjective time of garden spaces in Derek Jarman's garden through a literature review. The sense of time inherent to a garden space was divided into objective and subjective time. The former refers to ecological time that is quantified and has durability, while the latter indicates time that changes according to the consciousness of the human subject. It also includes time that is emotionalized by the sense of the human subject. This study first interpreted Jarman's garden space from the perspective of objective time. The garden transforms itself into a sensitive space according to Jarman's personal emotions in the current space within objective time, showing the multilayered attributes of space. Therefore, a garden space that exists in objective time is ultimately not objective, and is transformed according to the active reception of the human subject. Next, this study examined Jarman's garden space from the perspective of subjective time. The garden space lost in Jarman's memories and the one in his future illusion turn into a space that connotes abundant meaning according to Jarman's imagination or perception. Therefore, in subjective time, garden space is transformed according to Jarman's consciousness. This study verified that garden space, regardless of whether time is objective or subjective, can create infinite space according to the consciousness or emotions of the human subject beyond the existence of physical space. Since garden space has a unique intimacy unlike urban space, this study presented the uniqueness of garden space with an approach that differs from previous studies on gardens.

Hybrid Urbanscapes of PC Bangs and Their Socio-Spatial Effects on Human Bodies (피시방의 혼성적 도시경관과 인간 육체에 대한 사회-공간적 영향)

  • This paper suggests an inquiry into the characteristics and implications of urbanscapes produced by Internet cafes, widely called PC Bangs in Korea, and their effects on the motions and boundaries of human bodies as cyborgs which exist in between actual and virtual spaces or between human and machine spaces in PC Bangs. The paper, which is organised into two main sections, first investigates the streetscapes of PC Bangs as electronic architectural spaces and suggests the urban electronic space of PC Bangs in terms of hypertext space. Then, it looks at the effects of PC Bangs on human bodies which exist as human-machine hybrids or cyborgs in PC Bangs. The paradoxical socio-spatial characteristics of PC Bangs as third, liminal or hybrid spaces between actual and virtual spaces or between human and machine spaces can be explained as follows. Firstly, there appear both nomadic and sedentary landscapes in that people in PC Bangs move in virtual spaces on the one hand, and are static in actual spaces on the other hand. Secondly, both open and closed spaces are shaped in that although PC Bangs act as open or public electronic spaces, they involve invisible social boundaries, forming the gendered space of masculinism. Thirdly, the boundaries of the human body are extended and are shrunk at the same time in that while the sensory boundaries of the body in PC Bangs are extended through electronic networks, its social boundaries are shrunk through the imaginary space of solipsism. Thus and finally, PC Bangs can be characterised not only as social spaces entailing embodied and gendered landscapes, but also as non-places involving the cyborg landscapes of human-machine connections.

  • Modem society is information oriented with countless people needing quick reliable information. They also wart to be freed from the limitations of reality such astime and space and experience the world of imagination as if it was reality. Design is creating something out of nothing which has an innate sense of virtual within it. Since it is a process of bringing an imagingnation or an image to life, it can be described as the realization of virtuality. there are many ways in which computer adapted methods were utilized for design up to now. With the advance of computers, the process of desinging became efficient, visually complex and much easier. Undoubtedly, computer is a powerful hardware an design and furthermore, find a way to maximize the presence and to actively incorporate this in designing. The virtual reality system can be widely applied to environmental design to provude a high quality design and enhance the feeling of reality through imitation experiments. Computer simulation such as virtual reality systems is expected to be used widely in environmental design.

Filter-Bank Based Regularized Common Spatial Pattern for Classification of Motor Imagery EEG (동작 상상 EEG 분류를 위한 필터 뱅크 기반 정규화 공통 공간 패턴)

  • Recently, motor imagery electroencephalogram(EEG) based Brain-Computer Interface(BCI) systems have received a significant amount of attention in various fields, including medicine and engineering. The Common Spatial Pattern(CSP) algorithm is the most commonly-used method to extract the features from motor imagery EEG. However, the CSP algorithm has limited applicability in Small-Sample Setting(SSS) situations because these situations rely on a covariance matrix. In addition, large differences in performance depend on the frequency bands that are being used. To address these problems, 4-40Hz band EEG signals are divided using nine filter-banks and Regularized CSP(R-CSP) is applied to individual frequency bands. Then, the Mutual Information-Based Individual Feature(MIBIF) algorithm is applied to the features of R-CSP for selecting discriminative features. Thereafter, selected features are used as inputs of the classifier Least Square Support Vector Machine(LS-SVM). The proposed method yielded a classification accuracy of 87.5%, 100%, 63.78%, 82.14%, and 86.11% in five subjects("aa", "al", "av", "aw", and "ay", respectively) for BCI competition III dataset IVa by using 18 channels in the vicinity of the motor area of the cerebral cortex. The proposed method improved the mean classification accuracy by 16.21%, 10.77% and 3.32% compared to the CSP, R-CSP and FBCSP, respectively The proposed method shows a particularly excellent performance in the SSS situation.

Research of the Formation of Makerspaces in Public Libraries, Based on a Survey on Space Usage and Programs Being Operated (공공도서관 메이커스페이스 조성과 운영 현황조사 분석 연구)

  • The paper explores the formation of Makerspace in public libraries, based on a survey on space usage and programs being operated. The respondents targeted librarians in public libraries. The survey is divided into two categories: in space usage section, the questionnaire explores level of openness of the space used; availability of equipment rental services; frequencies of the space rented; cost of management; and the number of people in charge. In program section, the survey asks on types of program being operated; spaces used for the program; age groups of participants, time and budget spent for the programs. The survey resulted in highlighting difficulties in dealing with a lack of equipment, space, and people in charge. The paper therefore raises the need of guidelines for the area, cost, and the equipment needed, based on mid- and long-term consultation with expert groups.
