  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling of tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as powder. The experimental tests for entrapped water ratio were carried out in accordance with the specificed method by Okamura. The rheological measurements of cement paste were conducted by using a commerically digital Brookfield viscometer (Model LVDV-II+) equipped with cylindrical spindles. The results of this study, in case of cement paste mixed with tailings, entrapped water ratio was decreased with increasement of mixing ratio. Thickness of pseudo water film was increased, and mean plastic viscosity was decreased with increasing replacement.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling of tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as powder of self-compacting concrete(SCC). The experimental tests for slump-flow, reaching time to the slump-flow of 500mm, V-funnel and U-box were carried out in accordance with the specified by the Japanese Society of Civil Engineering(JSCE). The result of this study, in case of SCC mixed with tailings, slump-flow was decreased with increasing mixing ratio. But reaching time slump-flow of 500mm, V-funnel and U-box were satisfied a prescribed range. The mechanical properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and static modulus of elasticity were checked with the requirements specified by Korean Industrial Standard(KS). The compressive strength of SCC was decreased with increasing replacement, splitting tensile strength and static modulus were similar to those of normal concrete.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as admixture for concrete. The XRD(X-ray diffraction analysis) and PSA(Particle size analysis) were performed to find mineralogical characteristics. As a result of XRD analysis, the tailings were composed of quartz, feldspars and muscovites, and C-S-H and quartz were found in cement mortar. As a result of KSLT for cement mortar mixed with tailings, most of heavy metals were determined as below the guide line for waste material. In addition, the setting time and compressive strength of cement mortar mixed with tailings were investigated. It was indicated that the initial and final set were retarded according to increasing replacement. The compressive strength of mortar was decreased with increasing replacement.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the vertical variation of heavy metals in tailings from the Sangdong W mine. Tailings samples were taken at 6 drilling sites with 50cm intervals up to 21meters in depth and dried at room temperature. The pH value, loss-on-ignition and water contents were measured. In addition, chemical compositions of the samples were determined by AAS after 0.1N HC1 leaching and ICP-AES after aqua regia leaching. The pH values were in the range of 7.2 to 8.5 due to chemical reactions of carbonate minerals. The ranges of heavy metals (mg/kg) extracted by 0.1N HC1 were from 0.17 to 0.93 for Cd, 0.04 to 4.39 for Cu, 0.03 to 10.9 for Pb and 0.06 to 14.1 for Zn and those extracted by aqua regia were 3.10~10.5, 23.61 ~251, 63.7~337 and 42.6~134 for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively. Generally, the metal concentrations in tailings do not change with depth, with they have a tendency to decrease with depth in some case.

  • Hydraulic analysis in a dam that has a single outlet of water can be made through a simple comparison between the total precipitation and the volume of discharged water. In case of tailing dams this estimation could yield an error because several drainage facilities are worked independently as well as simultaneously. In this research, a capability of the drainage system in the tailing dam of the old Sangdong Mine was analysed by the means of GIS technic. As a result of this study, it was expected that in the normal working condition of the whole drainage system, the flooding of water over the dam should not occur in spite of the consecutive precipitation during one hour with an intensity of 80.31 mm/hr, a probable precipitation within 100 years. It was, however, revealed that, if the drainage system did not work completely, the water could flood over the dam when the total precipitation reached 251.1 mm.
