  • For the improvement of nursery condition and the study of eco-physiological characteristics of Pinus koraiensis(2-2) seedlings, the primary productivity was investigated and the growth characteristics and their correlationship were analyzed from May to September in 1987. Seedlings used in this study were grown at the nursery of Experimental Forestry of Kyung Hee Univ. The installation of experimental plots were divided into control plot (100%), 63%, 37% and 19% relative light intensity, and each relative light intensity plots were split into $15{\times}15/m^2$, $12{\times}12/m^2$, $9{\times}9/m^2$ and $6{\times}6/m^2$ plnting density by randomized black design method. To take into account the edge effect of plant population, material were selected from each plot by random sampling at 30 days interval. Each sampled material was divided into leaf and stem drived in a drying oven at the temperature of $85^{\circ}C$ until it had constant weight and weighed. and leaf area was surveyed. Growth analysis for RGR and NAR was done by Blackman method and correlation coefficient were investigated between RGR and NAR by analyzing the dry matter production and growth characteristics of the material, cultivated on the experimental nursery under the condition of different treatment the obtained result were as follows : 1. The increasing rate of dry matter was similar at early stage of growth, but not at late stage. 2. Leaf area growth was the maximum value at 63% relative light intensity and the minimum at 19% RLI 3. The value of RGR was the highest on June under $6{\times}6/m^2$ planting density in 63% relative light intensity, the lowest on September under $12{\times}12/m^2$ of 19% relative light intensity. 4. The change NAR decreased in early stage of growth, while it increased on August and September, The value of RGR on June under $6{\times}6/m^2$ planting density in 100 light intensity was the highest, and on September under $12{\times}12/m^2$ planting density in 19% relative light intensity was the lowest. 5. Regression and correlation between RGR and NAR showed significantly positive.

  • The objective of this study was to understand differences among three half-sib families of Betula schmidtii seedlings in the effect of three Cd levels on growth and photosynthesis. One-year-old seedlings of B. schmidtii were treated with 0, 0.4 and 0.8 mM CdSO$_4$ㆍ8/3$H_2O$ for two months. Growth and physiological responses to Cd treatment levels of three families determined using dry weight, relative height growth rate(RHGR), apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency. The B. schmidtii seedlings exposed to 0.4 and 0.8 mM Cd showed statisticall significant decrease in dry weight and RHGR relative to controls. In addition, the growth inhibition of B. schmidtii seedlings was accompanied by a significant decrease in net photosynthesis measured as $CO_2$ assimilation. Apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency were also affected by Cd treatment, undergoing a significant and progressive reduction with increasing Cd concentrations in all families. We also found significant difference among three families of B. schmidtii in growth, biomass and photosynthesis when exposed to Cd stress. Therefore the present study showed that the difference in Cd tolerance among families might be attributed to genetic factor in response to Cd stress.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate growth performance and ascorbic acid contents of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum, Ligularia fischeri, and L. stenocephala growing under four different light intensity regimes (full sun, and 64~73%, 35~42%, 9~16% of full sun). The leaf area and total biomass of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum were highest in 35~42% of the full sun. However, the leaf area and total biomass were highest in 64~73% of the full sun in Ligularia fischeri, and L. stenocephala. The leaf thickness decreased with increasing shading in all three wild vegetables. The growth of root comparing to that of shoot decreased as shading increased, and as the result, the ratio of shoot biomass to root biomass increased. Ascorbic acid contents were higher in Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum than in Ligularia fischeri and L. stenocephala. Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum showed the highest contents of ascorbic acid in 35~42% of full sun. Whereas Ligularia fischeri and L. stenocephala showed the highest in 64~73% of full sun.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shading on the growth of 1 -year-old seedlings of Cornus controversa. The height growth was highest in relative light intensities of 100% and 50%, but relative growth rate in 50% was higher than that in 100% treatment. The growth did not occur under 9% relative light intensity. The root collar diameter growth at different light intensities is similar to height growth. The leaf area was highest in 50% relative light intensity, and the leaf area under the light intensity was small compared with the control. SLA and LAI of seedlings increased with decreasing relative light intensity. The LAR and LWR of seedlings increased with decreasing light intensity, but LWR decreased at 9% relative light intensity. The dry weight of root, stem, leaf and branch, and the number of branch and leaf decreased with decreasing relative light intensity. T/R ratio was highest in 17% and 30% relative light intensity. Lateral root growth decreased with decreasing light intensity except for that in 50% light intensity.

  • This studies were carried out to investigate the optimum shading for seedling cultivation of Cornus controversa and C. walteri. The experiment was performed under five different shading scheme such as 100%, 50%, 30%, 10%, and 2% of the natural full sun light intensity for 7 months in the field condition. Two species showed the highest height growth under 50% of relative light intensity, and the highest diameter growth at root collar was observed both under 100% and 50% of relative light intensity. C. controversa seedlings grown under 50% of relative light intensity produced more total biomass than control seedlings, but root biomass was less in the seedlings under 50% of relative light intensity. In case of C. walteri, total biomass production of the seedlings under 50% of relative light intensity was lower than that of the seedlings under full sun light intensity, but leaves and shoot biomass was slightly high under 50% of relative light intensity. Great reductions of height growth and diameter growth at root collar, and biomass production were observed below 30% of relative light intensity in the both species. T/R ratio of the two species was highest under 30% of relative light intensity, and the chlorophyll content of the seedlings tended to be increased by reduction of relative light intensity.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of different plant growth media on the growth of tomato(Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) seedlings during growth stages. The media were commercial plant growth medium 100%, earthworm cast (that was produced by vermicomposting of food waste and cattle manure) 100%, earthworm cast 50% + vermiculite 50%, earthworm cast 50% + perlite 50%, earthworm cast 40% + vermiculite 30% + perlite 30%. Plant length(mm), number of leaves, leaf area($\textrm{cm}^2$), stem diameter(mm), plant dry mater were greatest till the 2nd week growth stages in the commercial plant growth medium plots, but those were higher in the earthworm cast than those in the other plant growth media at the later stages of this study(P<0.05). And relative growth rate of biological yield, relative growth rate of shoot and relative growth rate of root were highest in the earthworm cast till the 4th week growth stage. Therefore it can be implied that there is the possibility of potential utilization of earthworm cast, which was produced by vermicomposting of food waste and cattle manure, as vegetable growth medium.

  • In order to inspect growth responses of Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance, Koelreuteria paniculata Laxmann, Quercus acutissima Carruther and Ulmus parvifolia Jacquin to NaCl treatment, NaCl solution was treated for four months with 0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mM concentrations, then survival rate, change of relative growth rate, weight, dry weight and pigment content of leaf were investigated. According to NaCl treatment, pH and EC (electrical conductivity) of soil increased, and growth rates of four tree species fell apparently as treatment time became longer. U. parvifolia had the highest survival rate with 15% in the 200mM treatment, and the other three species withered in the treatment. Relative growth rate, weight and dry weight decreased when NaCl treatment time grew longer. The total chlorophyll declined after it rose to 60 days, and the total chlorophyll and carotenoid of the all species according to NaCl treatment did not change very much. With the result from anlayzing growth responses of four tree species to oxidative stress which occurs during NaCl treatment, U. parvifolia has the highest tolerance, followed by K. paniculata, F. rhynchophylla and Q. acutissima.

  • This study was conducted to compare ozone sensitivity among Betula sp. by measuring visible foliar injuries and growth responses. Four Betula sp.(B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var.japonica and B. ermani) grown in the greenhouse, were transplanted in the plastic pots. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp. exposed to relatively high ozone concentration(100 ppb) for 8 h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. We measured visible injuries, leaf numbers and leaf areas at the end of experiments, and growth effects were evaluated by measuring the relative growth rate(RGR) of height and diameter and the dry weights of leaf, stem and root once a week. Four Betula species showed the significant differences for growth responses by the ozone treatment. Growths of three species, except for B. ermani, were significantly reduced by the $O_3$ exposure. B. costata with leaf senescence at the early growing stage and B. davurica indicated highest visible foliar injury rate may be the sensitive species at the 100 ppb ozone concentration. Although the growth rate of B. ermani was reduced by 100 ppb ozone exposure at the early growing stage, B. ermani may be a tolerance species that recover the growth rate with the adaptation for the high ozone concentration.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of sulphuric acid, cutting, cold stratification and hot water on the germination of Sophora japonica seeds, which have difficulty to germinate because they have hard and thick seed coats. The seeds were immersed in 30, 60 and 90% sulphuric acid for 30 minutes as seed scarifications, and cut 1/8, 2/8 and 3/8 of the opposite parts of radicles. As cold stratification the seeds were wrapped in wet towel, and then stored in plastic bags in a refrigerator $(4^{\circ}C)$ for 3, 5 and 10 days. The seeds were immersed in hot water $(90{\sim}95^{\circ}C)$ for 2,5 and 10 minutes. Pretreated seeds represented different germination properties, respectively. After sulphuric acid treatment, the seeds showed an increase in germination (G) and germination index (GI). Compared to the other treatments, 90% sulphuric acid showed the highest G (31.7%) and GI (6.2). The G and GI of cut seeds decreased with the increase of seed cutting lengths. And G and GI of cold stratificated seeds were not significantly different among the days treated (p=0.258). Two minutes treatment of hot water showed lower G and Gl than control, and the seeds were not germinated in 5 and 10 minutes treatments of hot water. At the result of relative growth rate and T/R ratio of seedlings from pretreated seeds, the seedlings from seeds in 90% sulphuric acid treatment represented the highest relative growth rate and T/R ratio.
