  • This study was evaluated the dietary affect of ceramics on laying performance, intestinal microflora population, NH$_3$ and VFA gas emission from excreta and fatty acids composition of egg yolk in laying hens. A total of 180 layer at 34 weeks of age were fed the experimental diets containing 0.0 % (Control), 0.4 % and 0.8 % of ceramics powder for 6 weeks. It is concluded that 0.4 % ceramics powder supplementation in the 34 to 40 weeks laying hens diet, improves the laying performance and ratio of egg yolk n-6/n-3 fatty acids contents and decreasing emission of NH$_3$ and VFA gas from excreta.

  • To secure a higher percentage of fertility in hatching eggs and a higher percentage of hatchability of the fertile eggs should be of direct benefit to poultry breeder ana hatchery operators. This study was carried out to estimate the relationships of egg production and fertility in broiler breeder. The data analysed were the record of pullets (5 strains) of broiler breeder raised at Poultry Breeding Farm, Seoul National Univ. from 1982 to 1983. Since the purpose of the study was only to find out the relationships between egg Production and fertility, many other factors thought to be included in fertility were fixed as much as possible. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Mean figure of egg production rate and fertility from 30 weeks age to 60 Weeks of age to 60 weeks of age were 60.5-65.2 percent and 82.7-87.9 percent. 2. Correlation coefficients between egg Production rate and fertility were high and positive, except line K, and the coefficients have highly significant differences. 3. Regression coefficients of fertility on egg Production rate were 0.54-0.97, except line K. 4. Maximum fertility age estimated from the polynomial regression equation were 44-47 weeks. The results obtained in this study suggested that the selection of high performance strain in egg Production should improve the fertility.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding split diets for a.m. and p.m. in laying hens on egg shell qualities, and to study the relationship among the methods of measuring shell quality with 480 ISA Brown layers during 32∼36, 52∼56 and 72∼76 wk of age, respectively. A total of 1,080 eggs were collected from 6 treatment groups in every laying period and weighed individually. Egg specific gravity, egg breaking strength, shell thickness and shell percentage of eggs were measured, and then correlation coefficients (r) and regression equations were calculated. By feeding the split diets for a.m. and p.m. differing in ME, CP, and Ca levels, and as the Ca level of the p. m. diet increased, eggshell qualities were improved(P<0.05). The correlation coefficient values indicate that shell percentage, shell thickness and egg specific gravity are highly correlated with the egg breaking strength(P<0.01).

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding betaine on egg production, lipid metabolism and osmoregulation in laying hens. Three hundred and sixty layers were fed corn-soy basal diet containing 16% CP, 2800 kcal/kg ME from 18 to weeks. Hens were provided with betaine 0, 300, 500 or 1200 ppm. Egg production, feed intake, egg weight and feed conversion were examined in every four weeks. Liver and egg betaine. serum cholesterol and neutal fat were measured at the mid experiment. Egg production was not statistically different among treatments from 18 to 26 weeks of age, but significantly increased for the rest of period in hens fed more than 600ppm betaine(P<0.05). Betaine added treatments showed a tendency to increase feed intake. Feed conversion tended to improve from 26 to 33 weeks old in betaine supplemental groups. Egg qualify was not influenced by dietary supplemental betaine. Betaine supplementation seemed to increase in liver betaine. but not in egg betaine. Serum total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, abdominal fat content and ileal osmolality were not different. However, liver fat content was prone to decrease in betaine supplemental groups. The result of this experiment suggested that dietary supplemtal betaine can improve the egg production and decrease liver fat content.

  • The Calorimetric experiment was made firstly to measure the difference in energy metabolisms of laying hens among their three different laying periods, secondly to estimate the energy requirements of the layers on their respective laying periods. The laying period was divided into three chronological periods of 25-40, 41-55, and 56-69 weeks old of laying hens, which are refered to as period I, II, and III respectively. 1) The fasting heat production (FHP) of laying hen on the three laying periods were 81.5 Kcal/kg$\^$0.75/ for period I, 72.3 Kcal/kg$\^$0.75/ for perod II, and 97.5 Kcal/kg$\^$0.75/ for perod III. The marked increase in FHP was found in period m, while there was a small difference in FHP between period I and II. The present study have observed among the birds in period in the high degree of plumage defectiveness, and this condition of bird might have accounted for the increase in FHP. 2) The regression equation between ME intake and energy retention (ER) were calculated, and the equations indicated that, for the period I, II, and III, the ME requirements for maintenance (MEm) were 123, 111, and 131 Kcal/kg$\^$0.75/ respectively, and that the Net Availabilities of Metabolizable energy (NAME) were 76, 79, and 74 percent respectively. For the whole laying period measured, MEm was 119 Kcal/kg$\^$0.75/ and NAME was 79 percent. There was a tendancy of higher MEm, and lower NAME during Period III, comparing with period I and II.

  • This research was carried out to determine the quantity and characteristics of layer excreta produced in different age and different types of layer house. Daily feed intakes in the growing stage were 60.8 and 92.9g/d the 6th and 12th week of age, respectively. Daily feed intakes in the early laying stage (19th wk of age) and the ending period of laying(55th wk of age) were 105.1 and 122.0 g/d, respectively. A laying hen consumed 193.1~222.5$m\ell$ of water per day. The amount of excreta produced by laying hen were 143.3~144.8g per day. The moisture contents of excreta produced by laying hen ranged over 74.7~80.5% in laying period. The average contents of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ in layer excreta were 4.88, 1.92 and 1.71% in DM basis, respectively. In the laying period, CaO contents of excreta were 7.42~9.02%. The moisture contents of excreta produced by windowless poultry house, open-sided poultry house applied mechanical ventilation and open-sided poultry house applied natural ventilation were 65.4, 75.7 and 81.3% in summer, respectively.
