  • Data were collected from 310 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and parents by questionnaires and analyzed by t-test and multiple regression analysis. The higher parents attachment and parents monitoring, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents and siblings, the higher perspective-taking, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents, and the higher socioeconomic status, the higher prosocial behavior towards siblings. More prosocial behavior toward parents was reported by girls than by boys. Prosocial behavior toward siblings did not show a gender difference. In the total group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the boy group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the girl group, high parent attachment predicted prosocial behavior towards parents and high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. Discussion focused on the relative importance of parents attachment, perspective-taking, and socioeconomic status in predicting early adolescents' prosocial behavior.

  • As material perspective that stresses absolute income has limitations in explaining socioeconomic gradients in health, research on the relationship between an individual's subjective socioeconomic status(SSS) and health has emerged in recent years. Although previous research has been conducted mostly on adults, late school-aged children, who frequently evaluate themselves using social comparisons, are likely to subjectively perceive their socioeconomic status and be affected by their perception. Accordingly, this study examined the relationship between late school-aged children's SSS and their physical health, and its underlying path based on a psychosocial perspective. For this purpose, data from the first year survey of the Seoul Education and Health Welfare Panel (2014), which consisted of responses from 394 children ($4^{th}$ graders in elementary school) and their parents, were analyzed utilizing structural equation modeling. The results showed an indirect but significant relationship between late school-aged children's SSS and their physical health, via stress, self-efficacy, and health behaviors, which are mediating variables grounded on a psychosocial perspective. No direct relationship was found between late school-aged children's SSS and physical health. Based on these findings, we suggested several implications to improving children's health, including efforts to prevent adverse effects of low SSS on physical health through psychosocial factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and empirically evaluate a theoretical model that delineated the processes whereby parents' socioeconomic status affected students'academic achievement via parental support and students' ego-resilience. The proposed model was tested with the first and second wave of a cohort sample of the first grade middle school students from the Korean Children Youth Panel survey by using linear structural relations techniques. The results of analysis showed firstly that parents' socioeconomic status, parental support and students' ego-resilience directly affected the level of students'academic achievement with statistical significance. Secondly, parental support, the proxy of social capital of the family, was contingent upon the parents'socioeconomic status. Thirdly, in addition to its direct effect, parents'socioeconomic status gave indirect effect on students' academic performance through parental support and ego-resilience. Based upon these results implications for social work intervention were provided.

  • The present study tested a multivariate model of direct and indirect influences of family Socioeconomic Status (SES) on children's early reading skills at kindergarten entry. The data used here are from one of the largest national databases in the USA, the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten cohort (ECLS-K). Utilizing structural equation modeling, the results revealed that a number of factors within parental characteristics, home practices, and SES come together to influence children's early reading skills. SES operated primarily indirectly through home literacy activities and also directly in influencing reading. In addition, parental beliefs about kindergarten readiness mediated the relation between SES and home literacy activities. Thus, SES influenced early reading directly and indirectly, through home literacy activities, and simultaneously, through parental beliefs, which in turn, were associated with home literacy activities that were directly associated with children's reading. The findings emphasized the multiple pathways through which SES is associated with children's reading and the need to search for other mediators of SES influence.

  • This paper explores the extent to which property scale, in particular housing price is useful as the measure of an individual's economic status. Its main object is to compare the distributions of the measure of housing wealth and other objective or subject measures, i,e., reported income and subjective class identification. Additionally, their relations to other variables are examined. An analysis of distributions and cross-tables based upon national survey of 2005 family and the database of apartment price of Kookmin Bank are used. It is shown that the measure of housing wealth differs from other economic status measures in terms of distribution and the relations to other variables, such as attitude variables and consumption-related variables. Its results also suggest that the measure of housing wealth can be applied to various areas as a new measure of an individual's objective economic status, in such a way to improve applicability of social survey.

  • The interaction between student and school levels should be considered to understand and examine equity in education. For this reason, we included the socioeconomic composition of schools to scrutinize the equity related to students' socioeconomic status and mathematical literacy in Korea. We applied the hierarchical linear modeling approach to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 data for binational comparison between Korea (5,548 students from 168 schools) and the U.S. (5,217 students from 161 schools). The findings show that school-level achievement and the socioeconomic composition of schools cannot be ignored to understand Korean students' achievement gap between high and low socioeconomic status. In addition, U.S. students from low socioeconomic status were likely to have similar mathematics literacy scores. These findings indicated that inequity in Korean mathematics education could be intertwined with the characteristics of Korean students like high demands for supplementary private education and school characteristics like curriculum selection. This research also reminds mathematics educators that people should not simply mimic other education systems to resolve education issues in their own system.

  • Present study investigated the effects of poverty and poverty-co-factors in childhood. The effect of poverty status was measured by needs-income ratio. It compared its effect on children's socio-emotional development with that of poverty proxy variables such as recipient of public assistance, financial stress, subjective perception about social class, residence in public housing. It also examined the effects of poverty-co-factors after poverty status were controlled. Results show that poverty status has a more consistent negative relationship with socio-emotional development than other proxy variables. However, the relationship between them disappeared after poverty-co-factors were controlled. Findings from the present study suggest that targeted efforts for decreasing poverty-co-factor risks should be made along with financial support.

  • This paper investigates how social trust and disability identity influence subjective health, focusing on the moderating effect of social-economic status of people with disabilities. We used surveys used for the development of the social exclusion scale of people with disabilities. As a result, social trust and disability identity influence subjective health. Namely, those who have more social trust and high disability identity experience subjective good health than other people with disabilities do. Second, the relationship between disability identity and subjective health was moderated by social-economic status of people with disabilities. Namely, the relationship between disability identity and subjective health is bigger as the level of social-economic status is higher. However, the relationship between social trust and self-rated health was not moderated by social-economic status of people with disabilities. Based on these findings, we suggest policy and practice ways to promote the subjective health status of people with disabilities.
