  • Objectives: This study aimed to confirm the relationship between toothbrushing practice after lunch and typical oral health behaviors in children and adolescents according to the subject and type of social support. Methods: The study used data from the 2010 Korean Survey on the Health of Youth and Children and selected 8,704 elementary, middle, and high school students as final targets. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to confirm the link between social support and toothbrushing after lunch. Results: The results showed that in elementary and vocational high school students, statistical significance of all social support variables disappeared after controlling for both demographic and social factors and oral symptom experience. However, in the middle school students, the emotional support of the neighbors and the emotional support of the teachers showed statistically significant effect on brushing daily after lunch (p<0.05). In general high school students, there was a significant association between family emotional support and toothbrushing after lunch (p<0.01). Conclusions: The oral health promotion program for children and adolescents needs to be integrated and coordinated with the overall health promotion program. In particular, it is believed that the school-based program can strengthen the practice of health behaviors by inducing behavioral changes based on the formation of healthy relationships and trust of colleagues and teachers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop social network-based programs including social support such as emotional health and healthy relationships that can be applied among children for oral health promotion.

  • The purpose of the study is exploring the factors affecting school maladjustment and its intervention strategies by examining the effect of part-time job on school maladjustment, and the double mediation effect of alcohol drinking and aggression on adolescents in this relationship. The survey is targeted to 865 high school students were surveyed. Frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were utilized. For double mediation analysis, SPSS Macro Process v.2.13 was used, and the result follows. First, 16.1 percent of adolescents responded that they had at least one part-time job until now. Second, the negative effects were measured on part-time job to alcohol drinking, alcohol drinking to aggression on adolescents, and aggression on school maladjustment, but there was no direct effect on part-time jobs on school maladjustment. Second, in the relationship between part-time jobs on school maladjustment, double mediation effect of alcohol drinking and aggression on adolescents were significant. Based on these results, we suggest the importance of improved job's environment and necessity of political and practical intervention methods to alcohol drinking and aggression on adolescents.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of community-based SSI programs (SSI-COMM) regarding "fine dust" on promoting middle school students' understanding of community issues and their character and values as citizens. SSI-COMM on fine dust was implemented in 4 middle schools located in Seoul, and 151 7th graders participated in the program lasting over 8 weeks. Data was collected through two questionnaires (i.e. students' understanding of issues, and character and values as citizens) and individual interviews with selected students. Results indicated that there were statistically significant increases in their understanding of fine dust issue after the program. In addition, the program significantly contributed to enhancing students' character and values, especially in the domains of social and moral compassion and socioscientific accountability. Student interviews revealed that they became more aware of the local community problems caused by fine dusts and started to consider what efforts should be made to solve them. They also felt individual responsibility for the occurrence of fine dust, and the need for participation and practice of community activities for vulnerable groups in affected areas.

  • Many people are interested in vegetarianism for health and animal welfare reasons, but putting it into practice is difficult. This study aims to examine how an individual's thoughts on the mind-body connection influence their choice of vegetarian products. In Study 1, the impact of two types of thoughts on health behaviors and the selection of vegetarian products was compared: dualism and physicalism. The mind and body are separated in dualism, whereas the mind and body are connected in physicalism. Study 2 tested whether thoughts about the mind-body connection activate the social values that an individual aspires. Study 3 used priming with healthy and unhealthy food images to examine whether the mind-body dualism connection was bidirectional. Study 1 shows a lower intention for health-related behaviors under dualism conditions, compared to physicalism conditions, where the mind and body are connected. In Study 2, the intention to engage in health-related behaviors and the preference for self-transcendence values were lower than in the physicalism condition. Study 3 shows that participants primed with unhealthy images had higher dualistic scores than those primed with healthy plant-based images. These results suggest that an individual's thoughts about the mind-body connection may affect health behaviors and social value activation differently.

  • Gocheong Seogee is a Confucian scholar in the mid-Joseon period during which Confucian philosophy is not completely established as a national discipline. He was an authentic Seon-bi who helped boost Confusion philosophy in southern and northern parts of Chungcheong area including Daejeon, Nonsan, Gongjoo, Buyeo, Hongseong, Jochiwon as well as Boryeong and Dangjin. Following Seogee, Jangsaeng Kim, who had studied under Yulgok, strived to firm up Giho Confusion philosophy there. Influenced by his teacher Geeham Lee's pragmatical school whose main principle is loyal to their country and affectionate to their people, Seogee set his heart on living up to the same path as previous holy men had gone through rather than pursuing an overly speculative school only focused on Confucian scriptures. He seems to have put the virtues of pragmatic Confusion scholars into practice in accordance with the way Confucius and Mencius devoted themselves to their study and learning. He carried Hyangyak into effect, built the first Seowon in Chungnam area called Chunghyeon Seowon emulating Zhu Xi's Baeklokdong Seowon, and paid close attention to learning with Zhu Xi's portrait enshrined. Those things attest that he eagerly strive to put Confucianism into practice. Through these efforts, he gave a significant influence on establishing Confusion philosophy in southern and northern parts of Chungcheong area and trained lots of disciples like Leechang Song, Jaemoon Min - the teacher of Choryeo Yootae Lee - and so on. As a result, he laid a big foundation stone to develop Confusion culture in Naepo region. Therefore, his position should seem to be re-evaluated in Korean Confucian history. In a rigidly hierarchical social structure, he studied and interacted alongside with Geeham Lee, Heon Jo, Ikpeel Song, Sik Jo, and others with no thought of their lower social status and without any academic prejudices. These kinds of his mind-set and attitudes seem to be a precious example of embodying real Seon-bi spirit. So, I suggest Seogee's life has a substantial significance in strengthening personality education of the young today and composing media contents of local community.

  • This study aimed (a) to examine the association between chronic illness and multidimensional disability(i.e., psychological/emotional functions, activity capacity, and participation frequency) among older adults with disabilities, (b) to investigate the effect of formal and informal supports on multidimensional disability, and (c) to analyze the moderating effects of formal and informal supports on the association between chronic illness and multidimensional disability. This study used 2014 Korea Welfare Panel Study(the 9th wave) data and 450 older adults with disabilities aged 50 and over were selected as the study target. The research model was analyzed by structural equation modeling using IBM AMOS 22.0. Based on the ICF framework developed by WHO, health condition was measured by the level of chronic illness; psychological/emotional functions were measured by health satisfaction, self-esteem, and depression; activity capacity was measured by ADLs and IADLs; participation frequency was measured by the total number of social activities joined; formal support was measured by the total number of formal welfare services for people with disabilities utilized; informal support was measured by perceived social support. The findings showed that the level of chronic illness was negatively associated with psychological/emotional functions among the older adults with disabilities. The informal support positively affected psychological/emotional functions and activity capacity, whereas the formal support showed the opposite result. That is, the formal support negatively influenced activity capacity and showed a moderating effect on the association between the level of chronic illness and the psychological/emotional functions in a reverse way. Based on the results, practice and policy implications for alleviating disability level among the older adults with disabilities were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to find a way for social welfare organizations to actively cope with environmental changes such as the corona incident according to the work coordination theory that work performance improves when actively coping with environmental changes. In other words, the mediating effect of member agility in the relationship that participatory decision-making affects job performance was identified. The subjects of the survey were workers in welfare centers in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong area, and 310 questionnaires were analyzed, and confirmatory factor analysis, research model analysis, and mediation effect verification were conducted to verify the hypothesis. As a result of the study, participatory decision-making had a significant positive effect on member agility and job performance. In addition, it was confirmed that the partial mediation model including the path that participatory decision-making directly affects job performance and the indirect effect that is linked to job performance after first affecting the agility of members is appropriate. The study has academic significance in that it verifies the effect of participatory decision-making and agility necessary for social welfare organizations, and suggests ways to improve participatory decision-making and agility in hiring, evaluation, and education of employees in social welfare organizations. In this respect, significance can also be found in practical terms.

  • The purpose of present study is to examine the effects of the elderly's assets on life satisfaction, and to examine the indirect effects, such as financial and emotional support exchange with their children, between their assets and life satisfaction. For this study purpose, the 5th data of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) was used. Abstracted from the data, 1,977 cases only for the elderly over 65-year-old were analyzed by employing SPSS 23.0 and SPSS Process Macro. The analysis results are summarized as follows. First, the assets of the elderly had a positive direct effect on the satisfaction of life. Second, the elderly's assets indirectly affected the satisfaction of life through the financial support exchange with their child(ren). Lastly, the elderly's assets indirectly affected the satisfaction of life through the emotional support exchange with their child(ren). Based on these results, this study suggests practical and political implications in terms of social welfare for the elderly's life satisfaction, so as to facilitate the elderly's assets accumulation, and to enhance support exchange between the elderly and their child(ren).

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the trend of the studies on Korean social welfare administration over a recent 10 year period. Employing both network analysis and content analysis, which are representative statistical strategies to identify research trends, we analyzed 221 articles published in the Journal of Korean Social Welfare Administration from 2005 to 2014. The major findings were as follows; First, we found two clusters -"social (welfare) service" and "social welfare organization"- in the studies of social welfare administration. In addition, more than 80% of articles are mainly related with human resource management, including job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and so forth. Second, the newly emerging academic subjects such as social enterprise and community network appeared to be done independently of traditional subjects. Third, the proportion of quantitative studies being focused on human resources was overwhelmingly high compared to the other types of studies; therefore, there are a few studies using qualitative or mixed method, evidence based practice, and discourse studies. In addition, the studies of the rural areas, which are a blind spot of the social service delivery system, and the studies about information management, financial management, marketing, organization innovation rarely appeared, despite their significance.
