The data of this study were collected from 105 long-term care elderly caregivers with 3 grade in Pusan, Daegu, and Gyung-buk area. The results showed that each stress of caregivers was influenced by diverse characteristics in various ways. Time-dependent stress of caregivers was influenced by elderly dependency and caregivers' health. Self-development stress of caregivers was influenced by elderly dependency, caregivers' health, caregivers' age, and relationship quality. Physical stress of caregivers was influenced by elderly dependency and caregivers' health. Social stress of caregivers was influenced by elderly dependency, caregivers' health, and relationship quality. Emotional stress of caregivers was influenced by relationship quality between the elderly and caregivers.

First, 21% of the caregivers responded that they had thoughts of suicide in the past year. Second, Symptom extent of dementia patients was positively related to caregiver burden. Third, worse in family relationships, which is sub factors of mediate variable, has partial mediate effect on the model. • This study is designed to find out the determinants of housewives' caregiving behavior to their elderly parents-in-law. For this purpose, a tentative path model, constructed with major socio-demographic variables in the caregiver's family as exogenous variables, is proposed to account for caregiver's behavior to elderly parents-in-law. The model is estimated with data collected from a probability sample of housewives in Kwangju, Korea. Estimation of the model, separately for caregiver's fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, in terms of maximum likelihood(ML) procedures in LISREL8 reveals that housewives' educational attainment, father-in-law's age, father-in-law's health status, and family size have statistically significant causal. effects on care giving behavior to fathers-in-law, and that housewives' educational attainment, mother-in-law's age, family size, and caregiving attitude have significant causal effects on caregiving behavior to mothers-in-law. Comparison of the two estimated models indicates caregiver's educational attainment, caretaker's age, and family size are prominent determinants of caregiving behavior that can be commonly generalized to the two models. Except for these common determinants, however, a nonnegligible amount of differences is identified between the two models. The findings are discussed and interpreted with suggesting some salient theoretical and policy implications.

  • This study examined the factors affecting family caregiver's preference for utilization of community care services among those who are caring for 65+ elderly parents, and aimed to show how social eldercare services would be settled in Korea. Help-seeking behavior model developed by Anderson and Newman(1973) was used to analyze the factors affecting their preference for utilizing the community care service among 283 family caregivers. Frequency, Chi-square, and Multinominal logistic analysis on SAS 6.12 was used. According to the results, about 90% of the family caregivers have preference for community and institute care services. In community care service, about a half comprise the preference with charge while the other without charge. However, about 90% of those for institute care service show their willingness to pay for the service. Also, a majority of caregivers like to rely on social eldercare service, rather than family as exclusively responsible, against long-term care for their elderly parents. Multinominal analysis demonstrates that use versus nonuse of community care services is primarily affected by predisposing factors(including age, carer-caree closeness, and familism) and need factors (including economic or psychological burden of eldercare, and additional role for family care). Enabling factors, such as family income level, economic support from other family members and siblings, and supportive care-helpers, are mainly associated with the preferences of free versus charge in service use. These findings provide some implications and suggestions for the development of social eldercare services in our aging society.

  • This study presents limitations of the old family supported system for the elderly being surfaced in the face of the changing life style of the people in today's industrialized, urban Korean society. The qualitative data used for this study are collected from the focus group discussions(FGD). The FGD data numbered a total of 43 participants who were divided into 8 different groups, each consisting of 5-6 respondents sorted out by sex and age as well as by their current cohabitation with their parents or having such experience in the past. The study paid special attention focusing on the values and the expectations regarding the elderly support and the family relationship. A critical reexamination of the old family support system for the elderly at this particular juncture is also a step forward necessary for the eventual formulation of policy measures by the state and the society to produce a new viable support system for the elderly in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate cost side by type of long term care services economically, and then to discuss the findings and implications for the results of analysis. For this research, primary caregivers that provide care the elderly requiring long term care services sanctioned by National Health Insurance Corporation were drawn and surveyed. Among collected data, data for 422 primary caregivers were used for this study. The subjects used in this study consisted of family caregivers from various settings that give care to the elderly. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, caregiver's household income level is low. Therefore, caregiving families with the elderly are likely to have financial difficulties. Second, under coverage of long term care insurance system, the direct cost caregiving households pay for the elderly is still very high. Third, indirect cost of caregiving households accounted for the larger proportion caregiving costs. Fourth, social cost burden for caregiving the elderly is very high. This cost amount is appropriately equal to household income of caregivers surveyed in the research. Fifth, service use cost of caregiving households is differentiated by type of long term care service. Sixth, direct cost of caregiving households is statistically significantly differentiated by type of long term care service, but is differentiated less than service use cost. Seventh, social indirect cost for caregiving the elderly is statistically significantly differentiated by type of long term care service. Eighth, social cost amounts for the elderly utilizing long term care service is very high, total social cost per capita by types of long term care service tend to converge on average social cost per capita of total service.
