A household survey was conducted on a stratified sample of community residents from 80 survey clusters in Seoul and the surrounding province who were 18-74 years of age (N=1,653). The data analysis revealed that the percentages of respondents who correctly identified symptoms of depression or schizophrenia were similar, 35.2% and 33.5% respectively. On the other hand, there were differences between the two illnesses in terms of respondents' perceptions of beliefs on causes and usefulness of various methods to address respective symptoms, and sources of mental health information. The authors compared the findings with the results found in other countries, and suggested policy and practice implications for community mental health prevention in Korea.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the mediating effects of school adjustment on the relationship between social capital and self-reliance of adolescents in out-of-home care(institutional care, foster care, and group homes). For this study, a total of 358 middle and high school students(13 to 19 years) were recruited among adolescents in care nationwide. Collected data were analyzed by using the structural equation modeling analysis. A bootstrapping method was utilized to examine the mediating effects. The results showed that social capital of the adolescents in out-of-home care was not directly related to self-reliance. However, complete mediation was found through school adjustment in the relationship between social capital and self-reliance. This indicates that social capital of the adolescents in care was significantly related to self-reliance only through school adjustment. Based on the results, policy and practice implications for increasing the levels of social capital, school adjustment, and self-reliance of adolescents in care were discussed.

The 2013 Korea Youth General Survey data were utilized. We analyzed data from 766 children between the ages of 9 and 12, as well as their parents. Data were examined using structural equation modeling analysis. The bootstrapping method was used to test the mediating effects of social capital. The results showed that poor children had lower levels of social capital(both within and outside the family) and happiness than non-poor children. Second, poverty had indirect effects one happiness. In particular, poverty affected children's happiness through their social capital obtained both from within and outside the families. The mediating effects were statistically significant. Based on the results, we suggested policy and practice implications, including various interventions for children in poverty that may improve their social capital, which influences children's happiness.

  • The purpose of this study is to generate a substantive theory that accounts for the social readaptation of the women who have engaged in prostitution and propose a practical program for them. We used the grounded theory developed by Strauss and Corbin(1990). Raw data were collected through the in-depth interview, documents and observation. We used constant comparative method for the data analysis. The nine women who had the exprience of prostitution have participated in this study. As a result of the data analysis, in open coding were generated 116 concepts, 29 subcategories and 12 categories, In axial coding the outcomes of a paradigm model were as follows. The causal conditions were named 'hostile environment' and 'the self endowed stigma'. The phenomenon turned out to be 'living as an anonymous being'. The contextual conditions were named 'cohesion of family', 'being pushed' and 'shrinked emotion'. The intervening conditions were presented to be 'desire of self restoration as a social being', 'reactionary reconstruction'. The action/interaction strategies turned out to be 'shifting of social status', 'neighbor alliance'. The consequences were presented to be 'psychological wayfarer' and 'tentacular living'. In selective coding we found a core category, 'repetition of leaving and returning from the life world'. Based on the phenomenon, two types of participants life attitudes were found as follows : present hesitating type, self concealing type. Following the adove results, We finally suggested the need to develope a community oriented case management model.

  • It has been well known and empirically supported that many persons with psychiatric disabilities experience recovery in the community. The sense of recovery is experienced while they recognize and manage mental illness and cope with everyday life utilizing personal and social resources. In order to explore ways in which the sense of recovery is enhanced, this study investigated the structure of relationships among the mental health state, optimism, positive emotions, quantity and quality of the social relationships, coping, and recovery of 460 persons with psychiatric disabilities through structural equation modeling. Of findings, first, in the results of path estimates of measurement and theoretical model, especially optimism and positive emotions demonstrated significant effects on the social relationship, coping, and the recovery, while, by contraries, positive emotions showed no significant direct effects on coping, neither the social relationships did on the recovery. Second, on the recovery optimism and positive emotions had direct effects, while quantity and quality of the social relationships had only indirect effects. It is particularly noted that positive emotions showed stronger effects on the recovery than optimism, and also had direct and indirect effects on the social relationships. Finally, partial mediating effects of coping were found between optimism and the recovery, between quality of the social relationships and recovery, and between quantity and quality of the social relationships; another partial mediating effects of quality of social relationships between quantity of social relationships and coping, and between positive emotions and coping; and the last same effects of quantity of the social relationships between positive emotions and coping. According to these results, discussions and implications for social work practice and practice research were suggested regarding the differential effects of positive cognitions and emotions on the recovery and different mechanisms of the quality and quantity of the social relationships, and the relationships among the resources, coping, and the recovery of persons with psychiatric disabilities.
