  • Social geography in Korea has been studied centering around urban social geography which has been developed mainly in English world, and then there have been a few concepts and theories that were tested in the rural social geography of Korean rural landscape. This article tried to grasp the conceptual basis of German social geography, and had views on the rural social geography in the relent English world. As a result, the author concluded that the rural landscape would be a representation of rurality, a component of local and national identity, and thought to be not only a physical reality but social, mental, cultural reality On the basis of this consideration, the author explored major concepts which would correspond with the universality and speciality of Korean rurality. They are as follows: 'lineage group' as a geographical socio-group, the 'regionalization' by social groups, and 'the territoriality of settlement' as a social space.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the recovering gambling addicts' overcoming process on their hardships of life which hamper their recovery. For this study, we had one to one depth interview with 10 participants who had overcome their hardships of life after stopping gambling. The data gathered from the interviews were analysed following the grounded theory process suggested by Strauss and Corbin. As a result, 131 concepts were constructed, and they were classified into 32 subcategories and 14 category. We presented "overcoming of the hardships of life through the acceptance of reality and re-determination" as a core subject which connects the whole concepts. Based on the research outcomes, we proposed some policy and practice intervention methods such as economic self-support program, social security service, and triangle support system by counselor-family-peer recovering addicts.

  • The percentage of divorce has increased rapidly even in Korea where traditionally attaches great importance to a family. However most counselors apply counseling theories and approaches developed in the West when they do counseling for Korean couple. In fact, the culture of Korea carries characteristics of relationism under the Oriental religion like Shamanism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Therefore it is not easy to gain sufficient counseling effect in Korea with such major counseling approaches. The Korean takes a serious view of family relations between father and son, Therefore the Koran society carries on a family line, devotes their lives to the cause of education, gies precedence to the elder. In such a cultural area, it would be quite helpful for counselors to focus their attention on various roles of each rather than focus on their conflict of intimacy itself.

  • Recently, there is a discussion about culture theory in the area of traffic safety regulation. It has the view that the subject of criticism, etc. by drivers' regulation interpretation, awareness about the danger of regulation violation and nonacceptance of regulation can be changed according to the way drivers' cultural bias was formed. According to the culture theory, fundamental views of the world in particular social relations surrounding individuals, world view or cosmology, are formed and the world view makes an effect on individual behavior and attitude. In this context, cultural cognition and cultural learning theory which are suggested in Christoph Wulf's study on historical-cultural anthropology provide new approach toward this phenomenon. According to his insistence, core mechanisms which can explain cultural cognition and cultural learning are systematized by five things; physical characteristic, mimesis, performance theory, rite and image. The purpose of this research is to investigate the changes by the way Korean people cognize traffic regulations culturally and experiences of traffic regulation violation through the analytic frame of Christoph Wulf's five core mechanisms. To achieve it, cognition of traffic culture was analyzed by analytical phenomenology for drivers who had been educated due to their violation of traffic regulations. Value, lifestyle and practicing methods which are pursued by people work in sociocultural context rather than are influenced by cognitive structure of individuals.

  • Library and information science(LIS) research has been dominated by functionalistic orientation as one of the postulates of positivism. As a result, it has often been criticized that LIS research does not take into account the social, cultural, political, and economic contexts on which the theories and the practices of LIS are based. In this regard, this paper seeks to establish and apply critical inquiry through a review of the relevant aspects of critical theory and application of those insights to current research and practice in LIS. Connections of LIS research to relevant political, social and economic issues are particularly stressed.

  • Criminology is not a science yet in the sense that the word is used to describe the hard science. It is due to the fact that sociologists have dominated in the study of crime and criminals. Thus, future criminological studies should adopt an interdisciplinary approach including such disciplines as biology, psychology, sociology, and so on. The interdisciplinary approach needs to pursue a general theory by systematizing the achievements from various disciplines in the explanation of criminal behavior. The current study also discussed several issues which are conducive to the scientific study of criminal behavior.

  • This study is primarily to investigate the alienation process that constitutes the regional identity of the border region in Kyunggi Province. It both discusses the concept of social exclusion and its application for a theoretical framework and examines patterns and formation of the alienation process based on the field survey. The empirical results show that the alienation process which defines the border region as a geography of place poverty and exclusion has been deepened through economic, social, cultural and spatial processes. In terms of material well-being and social participation, especially, the alienation is shown to form in every aspect of people's lives in the border region. The alienation gives rise to the cultural stigmatization which first builds up negative images of the region and then aggravates region's development potential as well as its future prospect. In addition, the alienation in the context of the border region turns out to be unique compared to major characteristics of other backward regions as well as quite spatially differentiated across the border region in Kyunggi Province.

  • The theory of creative city can be seen as one that reflects a relationship between recent change of economic environment and socio-spatial reconstruction in the so-called 'cultural turn' to deindustrialization. This paper considers approaching methods to knowledge-based economy or cultural economy as a context of development of theory of creative city, and suggests types of conceptualization of creative city. Then it reviews creative perspectives which can be found in recent domestic and oversea research trends on creative city, especially relating its nature with neoliberalism. Finally this paper discusses critically the concept of creative class as a social constitution of creativity or creative economy, and that of creative city as its spatial constitution. The concept of creative class can be criticized in terms of ambiguity of the concept of class, class-biased and economy-privileged idea, market valorization of culture, individualization against community, normalization of flexible labor market, and uncertainty of economic success of creative city. The concept of creative city can be criticized in terms of limitation of interests to city, ignorance of national and global dimensions, decontextual normative vision, legitimation of neoliberal city, lack of proof of causality between creative class and economic success, polarization of within and between cities.

  • Gut, Korean shamanist performance, is the archetype of Korean art therapy. It is because gut has the archetype of Korean mind and expresses the archetype in an artistic and therapeutic way. This paper compares and analyzes Gunung-geori of Hwanhaedo-gut and art therapy theories from two perspectives: the range of therapy and the therapeutic principles of performing ways. Gunung-geori aims to solve prolonged conflicts within a family, linking individual problems to family relationship. Such a therapeutic effect of Gunung-geori is well explained through the theory of Bowen's Family Therapy. Also the therapeutic principles that Gunung-geori's performing way are closely related to "transference" of Freud and "putting in the role" in drama therapy.
