  • The purpose of this research is to explore the role of Taekwondo in foreign migrant workers' adaptation process in Korean society, based on segmented assimilation concept by Portes & Zhou(1993) as a theoretical framework. In order to achieve this, an in-depth interview of 13 foreign migrant workers in Gyeonggi-region was carried out by using purpose sampling and theoretical sampling together, and the interview was analyzed using grounded theory method. The analysis result demonstrated that foreign migrant workers understand Korean culture, learn Korean, and interact with Koreans through Taekwondo, which facilitates their acculturation into the mainstream society. Also, they were assimilated into their own subculture of being fascinated by the charms of Taekwondo and trying to become Taekwondo instructors by returning to their home country. Lastly, they built a social network and overcame tough labor and the difficulties of living in a foreign country through Taekwondo. This research is significant as it examined the role of Taekwondo that preserves Korean culture and checked its value, in terms of the adaptation of foreign migrant workers who take a part in the current rearrangement of Korean society into a multicultural society.

Higher the social anxiety, higher in neurotism & worry but lower in Psychological Well-Being and Satisfaction with Life. Among the sub-factors of social anxiety, negative adaptation was significantly predicted by personal anxiety. However positive adaption were predicted by personal anxiety, fairness anxiety and future anxiety. Among the sub-dimensions of social anxiety, negative and positive adaptation were significantly predicted only by anticipatory anxiety. And there were significant positive correlations between social anxiety and aggressive/give-up response. Particularly, personal anxiety was the predictor of aggressive response, but safe anxiety and political anxiety were the predictors of give-up response. The dimension predicted the aggressive/give-up response was anticipatory anxiety dimension. Finally, respondents used problem solving stress coping strategy most. But the respondents whose social anxiety level especially safe anxiety and political anxiety were high used wishful thinking strategy. Moreover higher the reactive anxiety level, more frequently used the avoidance coping strategy.

  • The purpose of this study sought to examine the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between adolescents' family strength and school life adjustment. For this purpose, a survey was conducted from May 2023 to June 2023 on youth attending middle and high schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and statistical analysis was performed on the data of 768 people without missing data using SPSS 21.0 program. The results of this study were as follows. First, the family strength perceived by adolescents was found to have a significant positive effect on school life adaptation. Second, the family strength perceived by adolescents was found to have a significant positive effect on social support. Third, social support was found to have a positive and significant effect on school life adaptation. Fourth, social support showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between adolescents' perceived family strength and school life adjustment. These research results have implications in that they provide empirical evidence to help adolescents adapt well to school life based on healthy family relationships. In addition, we hope that this will serve as a practical basis for the use of parent education programs and family counseling programs that help adolescents adapt well to school life by eliciting social support through positive family functions at home.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate Korean version of Deaf Acculturation Scales(DAS). Pilot items were made a faithful translation of the Acculturation Scales of Maxwell-McCaw and Zea (2011) and were modified for Korean Deaf people. The Scale involves two dimensions, in order to measure the acculturation of Deaf people; Deaf acculturation and hearing acculturation. Using factor analysis, we developed a Korean version of DAS consisted of twenty-five items for Deaf acculturation dimension and twenty-five items for hearing acculturation dimension. These analysis supported the four factors of Deaf acculturation dimension and the five factors of hearing acculturation dimension. Reliability, assessed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, was .93 for Deaf acculturation and .93 for hearing acculturation, respectively, which confirm the Koran version of DAS. Construct validity was demonstrated through correlation with Deaf acculturation-related variables: age, age of Deafness, Degree of hearing loss, American Sign Language ability, and lip-reading ability. Criterion validity was supported by correlation with Collective Self-Esteem Scale. Limitation and implication of this study and direction for future research were discussed.

  • The quickening pace of international migration in the last twenty years brought fundamental demographic and social changes to the Korean society. Increasing number of marriage-based immigrant families imposes new challenges on social work community; however, the social work community has not been equipped with necessary practice models, sets of skills and professionals with cultural competency. This study aims to explore an integrative framework of social work practice with this client group. Research foci include the profile of marriage-based immigrant families in Korea, available social services at the time, challenges and issues they face, the compatibility of the empowerment based social work practice, and micro/mezzo/macro level concerns that arise for the effective service provision. Challenges among marriage-based immigrant families are converged into personal/familial, community related, and larger social-cultural issues. Empowerment is a multi-dimensional social process to help people gain control over their lives; a process that fosters power in people, for use in their lives, their communities and in their society. Empowerment based social work practice can be the most competent framework for working with multi-cultural families considering their multi-faceted acculturation issues while they navigate thru Korean society. Issues of educating and training of culturally competent social workers are discussed.

The main results are as follows. First, mothers' acculturative stress positively influenced children's carrier barrier. Second, mother's daily stress and neglectful parenting individually mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Third, mother's depression and neglectful parenting dual-mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Fourth, a triple mediation of mothers' daily stress, depression, and neglectful parenting was found in the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Based on the results, strategies to support the career development of multicultural adolescents were suggested.

  • Current support policies for multicultural families translate the focus on educating multicultural children from the initial adjustment of foreign-born brides. By contrast with Korean-born biracial/biethnic children of international couples, foreign-born immigrant children suffer linguistic and cultural differences. This study explores the acculturational difficulties and needs of school-aged immigrant adolescents in Busan Metropolitan city and suggests policies to meet their needs. Seventeen participants, including immigrant adolescents, immigrant parents, in-school service providers and out-school service providers, were recruited, and focus-group interviews were conducted. The major themes show that school-aged immigrant adolescents suffer from cultural/racial differences, different naming practices, linguistic differences, and age gaps. In addition, the study participants strongly call for KSL education, academic mentoring programs, career education, and education for multicultural understanding. This study suggests that future policies should be designed to support immigrant adolescents based on a diversity model beyond assimilationist approaches of adeficitmodel.
