  • Animal welfare has become a prominent concern around the world so that the laws and guidelines of animal welfare are being strengthened in many countries including the EU. In Korea, it is required to supplement animal welfare standards because social awareness of animal welfare has changed. This study was conducted to compare broiler welfare certification standards and improve the quality of practice. We found that broiler welfare certification standards differ among countries according to environmental and managemental differences. Standards for stocking density and perch which is considered more important for poultry welfare are similar, but there is a little difference in feed, water, litter and lighting. Therefore, we assumed that theses are able to revise standards taking into account the environment and suggested that the broiler welfare certification standard will serve as a more useful criterion if breeding conditions in Korea are considered.

Effects of rearing density on food consumption, adult mortality and mean number of hatchlings of Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) (쌍별귀뚜라미, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)의 사육밀도가 섭식량, 성충사망률 및 부화 약충수에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of the present study is to investigate food consumption, hatching periods, adult mortality, the mean number of hatchlings and ovipositional trend of Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer. The rearing and experiments were conducted in the rearing room ($28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, $60{\pm}10%$RH). As the adult rearing density increased from 50 to 400, it did not affect the average daily food consumption of adult crickets which was $0.067{\pm}0.008$ g a day. However, the daily radish consumption decreased from 0.128 to 0.068 g per day. 95.8% of eggs hatched by the sixth day after the beginning of hatching. The average mortality of the adults gradually increased, and reached 93.9% by the 8th week. Total number of hatchlings per female was $172.2{\pm}10.6$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) in 200 females rearing cages, which was noticeably less than $248.8{\pm}17.8$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) in 100 females rearing cages. Sex ratio of the crickets given in the rearing cages did not affect both the number of hatchlings and ovipositon rate. Oviposition rate periodically fluctuated as progressed, and it reached 81.5% of the total oviposition by the $3^{rd}$ week since the beginning of ovipoisiton.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data on housing facilities and management of broiler welfare certified farms in Korea. We investigated breeds, flock sizes, stocking density, perches, litter, plumage condition, and other diseases. In addition, we measured temperature, relative humidity, light intensity, ammonia, and carbon dioxide concentration in the barn. As result, criteria were met in all cases that we investigated. However, farmers commonly demanded relaxation of perch and litter. Perch usage of broiler was impractical due to low usage of it. Also, litter was increased, resulting in farmers' economic burden by the imbalance between supply and demand. This situation makes farmers reuse the litter. Unfortunately, there are no clear certification standards. During re-inspection, the animal welfare certification of farms was canceled due to the reuse of litter. It is difficult to modify the standard of perch due to the strong declarative meaning of animal welfare rather than the necessity of perch usage, however, the reuse of litter should be improved. It is important to think and solve any problems faced by all farms. Especially, animal welfare standards need to be improved in more clarity and rationality.

  • Rearing condition and species of microalgae on growth and survival of the sunray surf clam, Mactra chinensis larvae were investigated for artificial seedling production. The larvae of M. chinensis on higher temperature showed high growth and low survival and was grown over $230{\mu}m$ in shell length 14 days after hatching, but low growth as $151.1{\mu}m$ at $18^{\circ}C$. The larvae of M. chinensis on salinity showed highest daily growth and survival as $11.3{\mu}m$ and 65.8% at 30 psu, respectively. The optimum of water temperature and salinity for the larval rearing were $23^{\circ}C$ and 30-35 psu over 25 psu at least. The density of larval rearing was below 10 per 1 ml in rearing seawater for elevating the development rate from D-shaped to settled (metamorphosing) stage. The larvae fed the mixed diet of Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Isochrysis sp. (green), Chlorella ellipsoidea showed highest growth and survival. The larvae fed the single diet of I. galbana, Isochrysis sp. (green) showed high growth and survival. But the larvae fed the single diet of P. lutheri and C. ellipsoidea showed low growth and survival. The optimum diet of larvae of M. chinensis was over two species of microalgae included I. galbana, Isochrysis sp. (green) for elevating the high growth and survival.

  • Fed on commercial flounder diet at 20, 23 and $26^{\circ}C$ in semiclosed culture system for 32 weeks, the juvenile red drum (1.2 g) showed linear increase in daily feeding rate (DFR), growth (g/fish) and specific growth rate (SGR) with increasing temperature. In the second experimental series, the young red drum (214 g), cultured at densities of 2.16, 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ in flow-through tanks at water temperatures from 12.3 to $27.2^{\circ}C$ for 25 weeks, grew faster at the stocking density of 2.16 kg/$m^3$ than at the densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ the difference in growth observed at the stocking densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ was not significant. The DFR and SGR were also significantly higher for the density group of 2.16 kg/$m^3$. Briefly, growth of the red drum increased with increasing tested range of temperature and was also faster with decreasing stocking density. However, the total growth (g/tank) increased with increasing stocking density.

• A feeding trial was carried out to investigate the optimum density of juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) fed the formulated diet or macroalgae ( Undaria). Abalone with initial average shell length of 8.41 mm were stocked into three replicate tanks at four different densities of 1430, 2860, 4290, and 5720 individual/$m^2$ for 15 weeks. The formulated diet produced higher body weight and shell growth, soft body weight and survival rate than Undaria in abalone. Abalone fed the formulated diet have significantly (P<0,05) higher lipid and ash, and lower moisture and protein in soft body. Higher density resulted in lower growth and survival (P<0.05). Whereas shell growth, survival rate and weight gain were not significantly (P>0.05) different within the abalone stocked at stocking densities of 1430 and 2860 individual/$m^2$ in each diet group. Body composition of abalone was not affected by increasing density. These study indicate that the number of abalone (shell length ranges of between 8 mm and 17 mm) below 2860 individual/$m^2$ were predicted to effective density in the indoor tank culture system.

  • Two experiments were conducted to evaluate dry pellet on growth of juvenile Korean rockfish (sebastes schlegeli) by comparing with moist pellet and raw fish-based moist pellet. In the first experiment, three replicate groups of 40 fish averaging 4.7 g were fed one of the following three experimental diets for 11 weeks : d교 pellet (DP) and moist pellet (MP) diets containing $56\%$ white fish meal (WFM) + $3\%$ soybean meal (SM) + $5\%$ corn gluten meal (CGM) as protein sources, or raw fish-based moist pellet (RMP, $50\%$ frozen horse mackerel+$50\%$ commercial fish feed). No significant differences were found among fish fed different pellet types of diets in daily weight gain and whole body composition (P>0.05). In the second experiment, two replicate groups of 140 fish averaging 10.9 g were fed one of the following three experimental diets for 8 weeks : DP and MP diets containing $38\%$ WFM+$15\%$ SM+$10\%$ CGM as protein sources, or RMP. Daily weight gain and feed efficiency from fish fed RMP were significantly (P>0.05) higher than those from fish fed DP diet. These different growth responses between two experiments may be due to dietary protein sources and nutrient content. findings showed that DP can be used as a practical diet for juvenile Korean rockfish.
