In this study, two different uniform placement methods are proposed for each of Tetrapod, Rakuna-IV, and Dimple armoring a rubble mound breakwater, and the corresponding stability coefficients are determined by hydraulic experiments. The Tetrapod and Rakuna-IV show similar stability coefficients regardless of the placement methods, whereas the Dimple shows somewhat different stability coefficients depending on the placement methods. It is shown that the Dimple gives the largest stability coefficient, whereas the Tatrapod gives the smallest value. The uniform placement methods of Tatrapod and Rakuna-IV give slightly larger stability coefficients than the random placement, whereas the uniform placements of Dimple give much larger stability coefficients than the random placement. However, the small void ratio of uniform placements of Dimple requires attention because the blocks would behave like single layer system blocks so that brittle failure could occur.
While the existing pile foundation had the role of supporting the superstructure or reducing the earth pressure, recently there are cases where it is integrated with the superstructure to increase the lateral resistance. This study aims to evaluate a lateral resistance of block-type breakwaters with group piles by modelling experiments. The lateral resistance and bending moments of the piles by penetrated depths for the piles were measured. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased as the depth of embedment of the group piles. In particular, the lateral resistance was 1.52 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the riprap layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the block. For the bending moment, the rear piles ware larger than the front piles, and the outside piles were larger than the inside piles. The location of the maximum bending moment in the ground was shown at the interface between the riprap layer and the natural ground.

An efficient model for the dynamic analysis of caisson breakwaters under impulsive wave loadings is presented. The caisson structure is. regarded as a rigid body, and the rubble mound foundation is idealized as virtual added masses, springs, and dampers using the elastic half-space theory. The frequency-dependent hydrodynamic added mass and damping coefficients are considered by using the time memory functions and added mass at infinite frequency. To simulate the permanent sliding phenomenon of the caisson, the horizontal spring is modeled as a nonlinear spring with plastic behaviors. Comparisons with experimental results show that the present model gives fairly good results. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the relevant parameters affecting the dynamic responses of a caisson breakwater. Numerical experiments are also carried out to investigate the applicability to the prediction of permanent sliding distance and critical weight of the caisson.
According to the Korean Design Code for port and harbor facilities, bearing capacity of rubble mound under eccentric and inclined load is calculated by the simplified Bishop method, and strength parameters are recommended to be c=0.2kg/$cm^2$ and \phi=35^P\circ}$ fur standard rubble if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 300kg/$cm^2$, according to research results by Junichi Mizukami(1991). But this facts have never been verified in Korea because there was no large-scale triaxial test apparatus until 2000 in Korea. For the first time in Korea, the large-scale triaxial test(sample diameter 30cm ; height 60cm) on the rubble originated from porous basalt rock in North-Cheju was accomplished. Then strength parameters for basalt rubble produced in North-Cheju are recommended to be c:0.3kg/$cm^2\; and \phi=36^{\circ}$ if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 400kg/$cm^2$. And the shear behavior characteristics of rubble, represented as particle breakage and dilatancy, are investigated.

It has been widely known that the effect of diffracted waves at the tip of composite breakwater with finite length causes the change of standing wave height along the length of breakwater, the spatial change of wave pressure on caisson, and the occurrence of meandering damage on the different sliding distance in sequence. It is hard to deal with the spatial change of wave force on trunk of breakwater through the two-dimensional experiment and/or numerical analysis. In this study, two and three-dimensional numerical techniques with olaFlow model are used to approach the spatial change of wave force including the impulsive breaking wave pressure applied to trunk of breakwater, the effect of rear region, and the occurrence of diffracted waves at the tip of caisson located on the high crested rubble mound. In addition, it is thoroughly studied the mean wave height, mean horizontal velocity, and mean turbulent kinetic energy through the numerical analysis. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the larger wave pressure occurs at the front wall of caisson around the still water level than the original design conditions when it generates the shock-crushing wave pressure checked by not two-dimensional analysis, but three-dimensional analysis through the change of wave pressure applied to the caisson along the length of breakwater.

This paper presents an observer to measure the lengths of cylinders of an underwater robot for harbour construction using a pressure sensor. In harbour constructing, we place heavy armour stones weighing over 2~3 tons on the surface of the bank to protect it from storming wave. This work typically done by a diver is difficult and dangerous so that we have developed Stone Diver which is the underwater robot for harbour construction. The robot needs a position sensor to control the hydraulic cylinder. The position sensors mounted outside the cylinders cause poor durability in construction site where shock and dust usually occur. However, the pressure sensor mounted inside a waterproof box improves the durability. Based on the dynamic parameters and the pressures in the cylinder, the observer measures the cylinder's position. This paper presents the positional accuracy of the pressure based observer and the performance of the underwater robot to assemble the armour stones.

Two reliability models, AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approach) and Monte-Carlo simulation method, are directly developed to study on both hydraulic failure mode of berm recession and structural failure mode of armour breakage of berm breakwaters. By comparing the present results with the results of other researcher, it may be confirmed that two reliability models can be straightforwardly applicable to berm breakwaters. Relative influence of each random variable on hydraulic and structural failure probabilities could be properly analyzed. The upper bound and the lower bound of failure probability can be evaluated by using bi-modal bounds of the multiple failure mode analysis, from which it may be possible to investigate some kinds of dependence into between two failure modes. Finally, it may also be found that the structural failure mode of armour breakage could become a main failure mode of berm breakwaters in the condition of more than any allowable berm recession.
