Identity Establishment of Korean library & Information Science through Promoting of Business Environment (기업환경 조성을 통한 한국 문헌정보학의 정체성 확립방안)

  • This study focuses on the identity establishment of library and information science. It suggests, as a way of establishing the identity, the necessity of promoting of business environment in library and information science. For this purpose, the study examines Korean cases that have damaged the identity, and analyzes why such damage has been done and how it affects the fostering of business environment in library and information. It also diagnoses the possibility of identity establishment such as, for example, professionalism of the librarian and creation of jobs through the fostering of business environment in library and information science.

Occupational Socialization Process of Librarians : A Qualitative Multimethod Study (사서의 직업사회화 과정 - 질적 다방법 연구)

  • Utilizing a qualitative multimethod approach, this study was to discover and improve the understanding of occupational socialization process of librarians. Through theoretical sampling, 42 participants were in-deathly interviewed at three studies, i.e phenomenological, ethnographic, and grounded theory approach. Analyzed data were finally integrated using grounded theory approach. 'Acquiring Social Recognition as an Information Professional' was emerged as the core category for describing and guiding the occupational socialization process. A seven-stage process was discovered: 'Adapting', 'Experiencing being the Periphery', 'Perceiving the Role', 'Pursuing the advancement', 'Realizing the professionality', 'Rediscovering the Value', and 'Showing the Professionality'. Especially, 'Experiencing being the Periphery' was identified as a critical and unique process, reflected the perceived status of librarians in Korea. Also, it discussed characteristics and socialization strategies of the process.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret the growth and the present status of Korean librarians using statistical data. The data were collected from various statistics on Korean libraries and were analyzed for a time series The results are : The librarians are not well recognized as professionals in korea. Only a small portion of the library staffs are professionals but professionals are gradually increasing. However, many librarians do not belong to the professional associations or societies. Thus appropriate promotional policy for the professional librarianship is very much desired.

A Study on the Task Analysis of Public Libraries in Korea (공공도서관의 직무 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the core tasks, degree of professionalism on tasks, and job importance recognized by the library staff through job analysis. The results of this study will be able to take advantage of political materials about the staffing and organizational structure of public libraries in South Korea. Survey to target 49 librarians of public libraries in Gyeonggi Province was performed to job analysis. The 21.1% of library tasks was confirmed to be a high job importance, and the 69.6% of entire tasks had the high professionalism. And library staff members recognized that 73.1% of library tasks should be performed by librarians.

A Study on the Development of Continuing Education to Enhance the Specialization of Librarians (사서직의 전문성 제고를 위한 계속교육발전 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to took for systematic, effective ways of providing continuing education for incumbent librarians in order that they could be more specialized in their profession. For the purpose, this research performed pervious literature reach and then a questionnaire survey for the librarians to determine their service periods and opinions, requirements and suggestions about continuing education as above and the current status of the education. The result of the study can be described as below. First, few incumbent librarians generally participate in continuing education. The participation, if any, is different in degree according to types of the librarian's library and task. Second, continuing education provided by responsible agencies is seen negative in value, but relatively positive in validity. it is agreed that the education is not easy to be provided due to a lack of time. Third, individual incumbent librarians are little devoted to continuing education, although the devotion is somewhat different according to the type of library. Fourth, an absolute majority of the librarians want the establishment of an authorities exclusively assuming continuing education service and the provision of informal continuing education related to computer during their working hours or vacation period. Fifth, the librarians under survey suggests that it is necessary for the development of continuing education to establish an exclusively responsible authorities as mentioned before and a system for evaluating each of agencies providing continuing education service, implement relevant, specific programs, introduce incentives for those librarians who receive the education and thereon make studies, help and promote librarians to be trained abroad, apply new ways of continuous education and extend the range of such educational process.

Through theoretical sampling, 42 participants were in-deathly interviewed at three studies, i. e phenomenological, ethnographic, and grounded theory approach.   • 본 연구는 민간위탁 공공도서관을 대상으로 관료제적 특징 및 그 요인들을 탐색함을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 3개의 민간위탁 공공도서관에서 각각 사서 2명씩을 대상으로 비구조화 심층면담을 실시하였다. 면담 후 녹취록을 작성하여 분석대상으로 삼았으며, 베버의 이념형 관료제에 기반한 6개의 관료제적 특성을 살펴보았다. 대상 도서관의 관료제 정도는 전반적으로 낮거나 보통 수준이었으며, 사서직의 전문성, 관장의 리더십, 모기관과의 위계 수준 등이 영향을 미친 것으로 파악되었다.

  • Using structured interviews a study was undertaken with 25 high school students in Seoul and Kyonggi Province to elicit their perceptions of teacher-Ibrarian as a profession. The study also sought to gauge the extent of the student's intentions on pursuing a career in librarianship. Responses were content analysed to determine the extent of knowledge and understanding held. intentions on choosing librarianship as a career. Findings suggest the image of teacher-librarian to be poor and that librarianship as a career is far from desirable amongst the teenagers of Seoul and Kyonggi Province.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the value of school libraries and to find ways to realize the value after examining school libraries and teacher librarians in Korea. According to this study, school libraries can be useful resource to promote Koreans' social perception in all types of libraries and the LIS because school libraries are accessible to those who experience public education. As a major area of research and the field in the LIS, school libraries have strong possibilities to produce qualified librarians. The cooperation among librarians and legislative proceeding to staff full-time teacher librarians, and the expansion of school library researchers to activate field researches are needed in order to maximize the value.

A Study on Perceptions of Public Librarian Jobs (공공도서관 사서 직무에 대한 인식조사 연구)

  • In this study, a survey of public library librarians was conducted to examine the current librarian's job status by conducting a survey on the library's environment, such as the size of books, number of employees, and operating subjects. As a result of the study, it was found that based on the current job content and recognition, librarians are mainly working in the order of operating reading culture programs, planning reading culture programs, and user information services. In addition, it can be seen that librarians highly value the importance of their respective duties, and in the case of labor intensity, more than half of them recognize that the current labor intensity is high. Among the detailed competency units corresponding to each task in the future, more appropriate competency unit elements should be considered in consideration of the essential competency, additional supplementation, and lower factors through this study. In addition, the higher the number and experience of regular workers in the library, the higher the degree of librarian certification, and the higher the current position, the higher the importance, difficulty, and expertise of the current work, so it is expected that the library should continue to build experience in the future.
