This study was carried out to investigate the effects of climatic conditions on the budding of buds and the growth of shoots of mulberry (Morus alba L.) at Suwon for the period of six years from 1978 to 1983. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The period that influenced most greatly on mulberry budding and foliating of it's buds was from late part of March to middle part of April in the district of Suwon, Korea. 2. Temperatures in soil 20cm deep during the period from late part of March to middle part of April had high correlations with budding dates. 3. It was disclosed that the budding date had high correlations with the date of bud shaped swallow-bill (r=0.9861**), date of the third leaf(r=0.97**), and date of the fifth leaf(r=0.96**), respectively. 4. The higher the average temperature of April became, the longer the length of shoots became. 5. The earlier the budding date and foliating date came, the larger the leaf yield became. However, with excessive amount of precipitation after early budding and foliating, the leaf yield was not increased in proportional. 6. The longer the growing period of the shoots became, the larger the leaf yield became.

This study was performed to investigate the antibacterial activities and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6 strains of Beauveria bassiana against mulberry pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activities and the MIC were measured using paper disc method and broth dilution method, respectively. The antibacterial activities were found out just B. bassiana J200, and shown at 13 mm from Erwinia rhapontici KACC 10407 and at 17 mm from Pseudomonas syringae KACC 10390 and Xanthomonas campestris KACC 12134. The MIC were all observed at 4.0% from E. rhapontici KACC 10407, P. syringae KACC 10390 and X. campestris KACC 12134. The results suggest that B. bassiana could play a good role for biological control against mulberry pathogenic bacteria.
Five cytotoxic and antioxidative flavonoids were isolated from the stem bark of Cudrania tricuspidata by consecutive purification using HP-20, silicagel and prep-HPLC. They were identified as taxifolin, orobol, eriodictyol, dihydrokaempferol and steppogenin by means of spectral studies. The antioxidative activities $(IC_{50})$ assayed by TBA method of these compound $1{\sim}5$ to were 6, 3, 3, >50, and $10\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The effect on the growth inhibition $(IC_{50})$ of these compounds against P388 cell line were found to be 0.18, 3.3, 15 and $6.2\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively in the order of compound 2 to 5.
In this study, I investigated the species composition in the Mulberry tree cultivation area from April 2013 to March 2014 at Busan. Five genera and nine species found are as follows: Aporrectodea caliginosa (Savigny, 1826), Bimastos parvus (Eisen, 1874), Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826), Drawida japonica (Michaelsen, 1892), Amynthas heteropodus (Goto&Hatai, 1898), Amynthas agrestis (Goto & Hatai, 1899), Amynthas corticis (Kinberg, 1867), Amynthas hilgendorfi (Michaelsen, 1895), and Amynthas sp. A total of 317 individuals of Aporrectodea caliginosa (Savigny, 1826) was collected. Ap. caligionosa and A. heteropodus were found to be the most dominant species during the study period. Interestingly, the maximum population density of Ap. caligionosa was recorded to be in the month of October. Further details analysis indicated that, its population increased rapidly during the breeding season between summer and autumn and thereafter gradually decreased through winter toward the following February. Three growth stages of Ap. caligionosa occurred almost simultaneously with abundance composition of 76% in aclitellum, 12.6% in semiclitellum, and 11.4% in clitellum. Based on my study results, I suggest that this data could be useful for the scientific community to analyze the distribution of southern earthworm species in mulberry tree cultivation area.
The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological functionalities of 60 wild mushroom methanol extracts. We determined their fibrinolytic and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activities. Among them, 11 mushrooms showed fibrinolytic activity. In particular, Armillaria sp. showed the greatest enzyme activity (4.2 plasmin units/ml) in a fibrin plate assay. The fibrinolytic activities of Amanita virosa. Gymnophilus sp. and Lepista nuda were 2.3, and the activities of Amanita citrina and Cortinarius alboviolaceus were 2.1 and 2.0 plasmin units, respectively. In a ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity test, Naematoloma fasciculare showed the greatest inhibitory activity at 98.5%. The ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activities of Suillus luteus and Gomphidius maculatus were 66.6% and 61.5%, respectively. This study suggests that both Armillaria sp. and N. fasciculare can be used as candidates for the development of new medicine effective to cardiovascular diseases and biofunctional food.
Antiinflammatory and antioxidative effects of mulberry fruit were investigated by using bioassay screening system. The extract of muberry fruits showed inhibitory effect in phospholipase $A_2$ activity and cyclooxygenase II activity. Among nine varieties of mulberry tree, the antiinflammatory activities of the Shingwangppong, Ficus, Cheongilppong and Keomseolppong were higher than that of the other varieties. Also, antioxidative activity of mulberry fruit was examined by DPPH free radical scavenging method. The radical scavenging activity of the mulberry fruit decreased as following order : Shingwangppong > Keomseolppong > tetraploid Ficus> diploid Ficus.
The resistance against drying of mulberry (Morus alba L.) graftages lifted in the fall and spring was examined by measuring water loss, survival, and regrowth. The graftages were exposed on the ground an4 covered with 2 sheets of straw mat for 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 days. 1. Temperatures in the mat ranged from 13 to -6.5$^{\circ}C$ in fall and 24 to -2.8$^{\circ}C$ in spring. Relative humidity was 37 to 100% in fall and 20 to 100% in spring. 2. Water loss from the graftages was less than 10% after 10 days exposure in fall, whereas there was 9.8% loss with 1 day exposure in spring. 3. Six days exposure in the spring caused the root hairs to dry and the root surface to become wrinkled longitudinally and turn yellowish-red. 4. Maximum exposure which allowed 100% survival and regrowth after planting was 6 days in fall and 3 days in spring under 2 sheets of straw mat.
This study was carried out to obtain the basic data for an artificial cultivation of Phellinus sp.. The optimum conditions for the mycelial growth on the different sawdusts (Quercus aliena, Morns alba and Alnus japonica) substrate of an isolated Phellinus sp. were optimized by response surface methodology. The ratio of rice bran addition to sawdust and the suitable moisture content for the mycelial growth in the all sawdust media were about 30% (w/w) and $65{\sim}70%$ (w/v), respectively. The initial pHs for the mycelial growth of Quercus aliena and Morns alba were in the range of $pH\;5{\sim}6$, whereas Alnus japonica was obtained at pH 6. The optimum temperature for the mycelial growth was about $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, depending on the different kinds of wood substrates. From the response surface analysis, the values of independent variables of Quercus aliena at stationary points were determined to be 31.01 % (w/w) of rice bran, pH of 5.31 and 69.03% (w/v) of moisture content, and the expected value of mycelial growth was about 8.32 cm. Both the ratio of rice bran addition to sawdust $(X_1)$ and moisture content $(X_3)$ were effective to the mycelial growth. In the case of Morns alba, the ratio of rice bran addition to sawdust, initial pH and moisture content at the stationary points were 28.77% (w/w), 5.28 and 69.8 (w/v),respectively, and the expected mycelial growth of 7.60 cm was obtained. Stationary points for the mycelial growth in the sawdust media of Alnus japonica were 28.74% (w/w) of rice bran, pH of 6. 04 and 66.96% (w/v) of moisture content, and the expected values of mycelial growth was about 5.38 cm. Based on the above results, there was correlations between the mycelial growth and independent variables, and the effect of rice bran $(X_1)$ and initial pH $(X_2)$ for the mycelial growth were higher than the moisture content $(X_3)$. The optimum species of sawdust media for the my celial growth of Phellinus sp. was in the order of Quercus aliena > Morns alba > Alnus japonica.
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sugar contents in the loaves of five different host plants on tile larval period, pupal period, pupal period, number of eggs in the ovary, and the tolerance of fall webworm larvae (Hyphantria cunea DRURY) to gamma-BHC. The results obtained in this study were as follows; 1. The contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sugar in tile leaves tested were varied with the species of the host plants and sampling time. 2. The larval and pupal periods were also varied with the host plants and generation of the fall webworm. The shortest larval and pupal periods were found in the mulberry and the longest ones in the apple tree, and their periods were shortened much more in the second generation. Except the relation between the larval period and tile nitrogen content in the first generation, significant correlation could not be found between their periods and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and surgar contents. The nitrogen contents among the other chemical factors, however, might be much more influenced on their developing period. 3. The pupal weight and number of eggs in the ovary were also varied with the host plants. sex, and generation. In both generations, the greatest pupal weight and number of eggs per female were found in the mulberry and the least ones in the apple tree. No significant correlation could be found between the pupal weight and number of eggs per female and the chemical factors analyzed. However, only the nitrogen content seemed to be highly related to the pupal weight and number of eggs. 4. The tolerance of the fall webworm larval to gamma-BHC was highly varied with the host plants. The host order o( the larval tolerance level to gamma-BHC was box-elder, popla, platanus, apple tree, and mulberry. There was no significant correlation between the larval tolerance to the BHC and the chemical factors analyzed. However, the larvae fed on the host plant with higher pottassium content were shown a tendency to be higher tolerant.

Oxyresveratrol (trans-2, 3', 4, 5'-tetrahydroxystilbene), found in many plants including grape, peanut and mulberry, is a phytoalexin, an antimicrobial and antioxidative substance that rapidly accumulates in areas infected by the pathogen. We examined the accumulation of oxyresveratrol in nine Morus alba L. cultivars with respect to storage time and temperature postharvest and infection with GRAS microorganisms. Among the nine cultivars, the Suwon cultivar showed the highest oxyresveratrol content (9.6-fold increase) postharvest, when stored at $30^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The optimal temperature and postharvest storage time for oxyresveratrol accumulation was $30^{\circ}C$ and 6 days. When Ramulus mori was infected with five microorganisms, the accumulation of oxyresveratrol increased over 4-fold in response to B. coagulans infection. These results suggest that oxyresveratrol accumulation is influenced by storage temperature, storage time, Ramulus mori cultivars, and microbial attack. Therefore, postharvest storage for an appropriate time period at a suitable temperature might be a useful way to industrially produce Ramulus mori cultivars with high oxyresveratrol content.
