  • This research was carried out to investigate the shoot growth characteristics and climatic factors for early harvest and stable yield by greenhouse on mulberry ($Morus$ $alba$) in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. Budbreak and coloring date of mulberry in greenhouse were earlier 18~19 days than those in field, and from bud-break to coloring was 39 days in both cultivation types. Shoot length and fruit number per shoot of mulberry in greenhouse were not significantly different with those of field, but number of node was significantly little than that of field. For 39 days in greenhouse, weekly cumulative radiation were 0.3~0.8 times. But weekly cumulative temperature was not different with that of field. And relative humidity as range of 53.0~94.5% in greenhouse was higher than that of field. Therefore, mulberry is suitable to greenhouse cultivation for early harvest and stable yield.

  • The fertilities of pyloploidy mulberries and the germination abilities and shape of poliploidy mulberry seeds fructified by natural cross were investigated and the results are as follows. Regarding the size of seeds, that of the tetraploid was the biggest and that of hexaploid was the smallest among the investigated polyploids. Those of diploid and triploid ranged between those of tetraploid and hexaploid. The fertilization rates of the varieties of Shinkwangppong and Cheongunppong, which were triploid, were 25.4 and 55.0%, respectively, and Shinkwangppong showed 10.2% of cross rate, but Cheongunppong did not have germination ability. The tetraploid seeds showed 61~68% of fertility and 30~54% of cross rate. The Puksan No. 2, which is hexaploid, had about 43% and 7% in fertility and cross rate, respectively. The germination abilities of floating seeds of diploid and tetraploid were comparatively high, but the floating seeds of triploid and hexaploid did not have germination ability. The seeds of diploid had a high fertility of 81~95% and a comparatively high cross rate of 47~74%.

  • Armillaria mellea, honey mushroom is well known as a symbiotic fungus with Gastodia elata, The mycelial yields of the fungus were compared when cultured with various broth media. The highest yield of cell mass, 2.31 g dry weight/50mL, was obtained on germinated-malt extract broth (GMEB). The optimal broth concentration which was measured hand refractometer for mycelium production was $15\;Brix^{\circ}$. The optimal conditions estimated with response surface methodology under temperature, pH and incubation period were $25.9^{\circ}C$, pH 5.72, 15.22 days, respectively, on GMEB having $15\;Brix^{\circ}$ concentration for mycelial production of A. mellea.

  • Ethanol extract of barks, roots, stems, leaves and seeds of 49 species of plants were examined their growth inhibition by disk method on Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111, ATCC 19112, ATCC 19113, ATCC 19114 and ATCC 15313. The extracts exhibited comparatively strong growth inhibition were compared their activity with broth culture containing different concentration of the extracts. L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111 was inhibited by Siegesbeckia pubescens Makino and Morus alba Linne (Ma) extracts. L. monocytogenes ATCC 19112 and ATCC 19114 were inhibited by Ma extract. ATCC 19113 was inhibited by Sophora flavescens AITON and Ma extract. ATCC 15313 was inhibited by Foeniculum vulgare Gaertner, Prunella vulgaris Var lilacina Nakai and Ma extract. Ma extract showed comparatively good inhibition effect for 5 strains of L. monoytogenes. 500 ppm of Ma extract almost inhibited the growth of all L. monocytogenes tested.

  • Armillaria species are non-obligate root pathogens, as well as facultative parasites. The genus consists of about 40 species with worldwide distribution that are difficult to identify morphologically. Their hosts include conifers, hardwoods, vines, and even herbs. These fungi contribute to natural thinning and succession of vegetation in forests and decompose wood to develop edible fruiting bodies from spring to autumn. Its genets have a lifespan of up to 2000 years and have been found to occupy as much as 960 ha of forest land. Recently, forest tending work such as thinning of forests has resulted in the creation of tree stumps that support the growth of Armillaria, and these mushrooms have become an income source in mountainous areas. Therefore, identification of these species is needed. We review the difficulties in identification, suggest a species identification key for Korean indigenous species, and discuss the significance of Armillaria in terms of forest ecology and plant pathology.

  • The antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves and fruits (Morus alba L., M. bombycis Koidz, and M. Lhou (Ser). Koidz) collected from In-je, Won-ju and Yang-yang regions, Kang-won province, Korea, was investigated with minium L-100 device and ARAW-KIT (anti-radical ability of water-soluble substance), in comparison to the ascorbic acid. The results indicated that total antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves was 2711.2 nmol (ascorbic acid equivalents). The highest stage of antioxidant capacity (3587.6 nmol) was opening stage of five leaves in spring. Especially, antioxidant capacity of mulberry leave collected from In-je region was high than that of other regions. No. 7 mulberry leave showed the strongest antioxidant capacity (6184.9 nmol) at opening stage of five leaves in spring. Also, fluit growing condition including fruit size and yield was good, too. Therefore, No. 7 mulberry three from In-je region, possessed not only high antioxidant capacity but also considerable fruit quality, was selected as potent resource for mulberry breeding and functional material development.

  • BACKGROUND: Two Field tests were conducted at Buan and Yangpyung in 2012 and 2013 to confirm controlling effect of mulberry popcorn disease and mulberry Sucker pests which are becoming serious in mass cultivation area of eco-friendly farming mulberry. METHODS AND RESULTS: As the treatments, 4 Natural products and 3 microbials were applied and 4 mulching materials were used. On the prevent effect of mulberry popcorn disease(Sclerotinia shiraiana) by using mulching materials, nonwoven fabric mulching showed worse effect than non-mulched treatment plot. Moreover, rice straw mulching showed significantly worse effect compare to nonwoven fabric and herb mulching treatments. Natural plant extracts and microbials showed 40~65% control value in 2013, which is little bit worse than 2012 results. On the control effect of mulberry Sucker(Amomoneura mori), organic products which combined with neem, sophora and derris showed excellent result as similar control level of Thiophanate-methyl. It means the chemical products can be replaced with organic product. CONCLUSION(S): According to the 2 years studied results, integrate eco-friendly farming measures are recommended for control of mulberry popcorn disease, because any single method is seemed not sufficient enough. However, natural plant extracts mixture is recommended as a product to control of mulberry Sucker.
