  • This paper presents a data-fitting technique in which a B-spline hypervolume is used to approximate a given data set of scattered data samples. We describe the implementation of the data structure of a B-spline hypervolume, and we measure its memory size to show that the representation is compact. The proposed technique includes two algorithms. One is for the determination of the knot vectors of a B-spline hypervolume. The other is for the control points, which are determined by solving a linear least-squares minimization problem where the solution is independent of the data-set complexity. The proposed approach is demonstrated with various data-set configurations to reveal its performance in terms of approximation accuracy, memory use, and running time. In addition, we compare our approach with existing methods and present unconstrained optimization examples to show the potential for various applications.

  • This paper presents a new global optimization algorithm based on the branch-and-bound principle using Bspline approximation techniques. It describes the algorithmic components and details on their implementation. The key components include the subdivision of a design space into mutually disjoint subspaces and the bound calculation of the subspaces, which are all established by a real-valued B-spline volume model. The proposed approach was demonstrated with various test problems to reveal computational performances such as the solution accuracy, number of function evaluations, running time, memory usage, and algorithm convergence. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is complete without using heuristics and has a good possibility for application in large-scale NP-hard optimization.

  • The calculation of earthwork plays a major role in plan or design of many civil engineering projects, and thus it has become very important to advanced the accuracy of earthwork calculation. Current methods used for estimating the volume of pit excavation assumes that the ground profile between the grid points is linear(trapezoidal rule), or nonlinear(simpson's formulas). Generally speaking, the nonlinear profile formulas provide better accuracy than the linear profile formulas. However, all the formulas mentioned have a common drawback to ground profile, such as sharp corners or the grid points of any two straight lines. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of finding a spline surface which interpolates the given data and an appropriate method to calculate the earthwork. We present some computational results showing that our proposed method provides better accuracy than Chen and Lin's method.

  • To analyze the performance of array shape estimation techniques using auxiliary sensors, the appropriate number and the positions of auxiliary sensors are investigated. Also, a post-processing technique based on spline interpolation is proposed to improve the performance of array shape estimation. The simulation results showed that when auxiliary sensors are arranged uniformly, the performance of shape estimation is better than other arrangements of auxiliary sensors. Also, the proposed post-processing technique improved the performance of the existing shape estimation method, such as Kalman filter method.

  • In numerical analysis numerical values of thermodynamic properties such as temperature, pressure, specific volume, enthalpy and entropy are required. But most of the thermodynamic properties of the steam table are determined by experiment. Therefore they are supposed to have measurement errors. In order to make noised thermodynamic properties corresponding to errors, random numbers are generated, adjusted to appropriate magnitudes and added to original thermodynamic properties. the neural networks and quadratic spline interpolation method are introduced for function approximation of these modified thermodynamic properties in the saturated water based on pressure. It was proved that the neural networks give smaller percentage error compared with quadratic spline interpolation. From this fact it was confirmed that the neural networks trace the original values of thermodynamic properties better than the quadratic interpolation method.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel blocking effect reduction method based on a rational B-spline. The blocking effect results from independent coding of each image block and becomes highly visible especially coded at very low bit rates. The proposed approach adopts a rational open uniform B-spline curve that used to produce a smooth curve through a set of control points. The pixels on the block boundary are treated as control points, and the weight values, which decide the shape of curve, are determined differentially by considering the distance the position of the pixels and that of the block boundary. The simulation results show that the proposed method has excellent performance for all pattern of the blocking effect with less computational complexity.

  • The standard approach of image resampling is to fit the original image with continuous model and resample the function at a desired rate. We used the B-spline function as the continuous model because it oscillates less than the others. The main purpose of this paper is the derivation of a nonuniform optimal resampling algorithm. To derive it, needing approximation can be computed in three steps: 1) determining the I-spline coefficients by matrix inverse process, 2) obtaining the transformed-spline coefficients by the optimal resampling algorithm derived from the orthogonal projection theorem, 3) converting of the result back into the signal domain by indirect B-spline transformation. With these methods, we can use B-spline in the non-uniform resampling, which is proved to be a good kernel in uniform resampling, and can also verify the applicability from our experiments.

  • This research presents modeling of a functional surface which is a constructed free-formed surface. The modeling introduced in this paper adopts modified B-spline that is utilizing approximating technique. The modified B-Spline is constructed with altered control vertices. It is applied to measure points on a surface of an impeller blade. This research builds a surface-modeler accepting inputs of measured points. Generation of cutter-paths for NC machining employs the model of the constructed surfaces. The machined surfaces which is generated in several cases are compared in the aspect of machining accuracy.

  • A laser scanner is widely used fur a device fur acquiring point data in reverse engineering. It is more efficient to generate a surface automatically from the line-typed data than scattered data of points clouds. In the case of a compound model, it is hard to represent all the scanned data into one surface maintaining its original line characteristics. In this paper, a method is presented to generate a surface by the segmentation of measured point data. After forming triangular net, the segmentation is done by the user input such as the angle between triangles, the number of facets to be considered as small segment, and the angle for combining small segment. B-spline fitting is implemented to the point data in each segment. The surface generation through segmentation shows a reliable result when it is applied to the models with curvature deviation regions. An useful algorithm for surface reconstruction is developed and verified by applying an practical model and shows a good tools fur reverse engineering in design modification.
