  • KSLV-I KM plume including alumina particle has been studied using the continuum solver. Alumina particles are assumed to have 7 different diameters, and the specific ratio of the plume gas is assumed to be 1.2, with which the internal nozzle flow characteristics are similar to those of the chemically equilibrium analysis results. The results showed that the expansion angle of the particles is smaller than that of the gas phase, and that the big sized alumina particles are gathered in the plume core and the expansion angles of the big sized particles are smaller than those of the light particles. When the emissivity of the particles are assumed to be 0.1, the radiative heat flux is equivalent to those measured during the flight test of KSLV-I.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis based on CFD methods has been conducted to predict the aerodynamic coefficients and aerodynamic loads of KSLV-II configuration designed at the system design phase. By the effects of exclusion of engine cowls of prior configuration, axial force and normal force decreased and center of pressure was much moved to the nose direction. Also, aerodynamic loads at flight and on the launch pad were predicted for structural load analysis. The computed results will be used for mission analysis and structural analysis at the next design phase.

  • To achieve the advanced forward flight performance of helicopter, the passive control methods for enhancement of the dynamic stall characteristics of rotor blades are studied. To enhance the dynamic stall characteristics of the rotor blades, it is essential to improve the lift performance and the pitching moment performance simultaneously with the control of the separation on the rotor blades. For this point of view, both the fixed droop leading edge and the Gurney flap which are simply realized are used for control of the dynamic stall in severe dynamic stall conditions. From this study, the combination of both passive control methods showed dramatic enhancement of lift and pitching moment performance in dynamic stall than previous research results.

  • In the present work, a synchronization test system for variable nozzle is described. Variable nozzles are used to enhance the effectiveness of aircraft engines at various altitudes. The synchronization test system was developed to verify the dynamic characteristics and synchronization of variable nozzle mechanism including flaps. The system with a variable nozzle was analyzed, before its fabrication, by a multi-body dynamics analysis software RecurDyn. The newly developed test system is being used to show the synchronization capability of a variable nozzle system.

  • In this study, the full scale flight type Dual-Pulse Rocket Motor(DPRM) with the bulkhead type Pulse Separation Device(PSD) was designed, manufactured, and fire-tested. The bursting time and pressure of PSD were analyzed by the pressure, thrust and vibration results of static fire tests and ablation of PSD was measured with 3-D coordinate measuring machine. As a result, PSD requirements, bursting conditions and thermal safety, were satisfied.

  • Three-dimensional numerical study was carried out to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the supersonic grid fins installed on SpaceX Falcon 9. The present three-dimensional flow results were compared to the results by the concept of the unit grid fin previously introduced for more efficient and simpler flow calculations, and the validity of the approach of the unit grid fin were evaluated. The aerodynamic characteristics in supersonic flights Mach 2.8 of SpaceX Falcon 9 with various angle of attacks were also obtained.

  • A direct connected test was conducted for a supersonic combustor with a cavity-type flame holder. Liquid hydro-carbon fuel was injected in different types of injectors: inclined and aeroramp injectors, for the flow condition of Mach 4 at an altitude of 20 km. The static pressure on the combustor wall along the axis and the total pressure at the exit of combustor were measured to analyze the combustion characteristics at various fuel flow rates.

  • In this paper the aeroacoustic characteristics of a helicopter main rotor system is measured by using a pair of scaled rotor blades. A low noise rotor test jig is developed for noise measurement and the rotational speed, thrust and torque are measured simultaneously in order to match the aerodynamic conditions with the full scale rotor. The accuracy of the force measurement device was checked through a calibration procedure. The measured thurst and torque with a 1.2m rotor are compared to the results of analytical prediction and showed that the thrust data at various rotational speed followed the prediction relatively well, but the torque data considered less accurate. It is also found that the background noise level of the test rig is sufficiently low, and the measured noise level from the rotor can be scaled with rotor tip speed. However, the Mach number dependancy and the directivity changes depend on the noise source characteristics.

  • Tailless aircraft designed for stealth efficiency uses spoilers instead of rudders for the directional control. When the spoiler is rapidly deployed, highly nonlinear and unsteady aerodynamic characteristics can be generated, resulting in adverse effects on aircraft flight performance. This paper investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil with moving spoiler using dynamic mesh CFD technique. The effects of spoiler operation speed, mounting location, and deployment scheduling are analyzed to reduce the adverse effects of the spoiler's dynamic operation. The results shows that the adverse effects of dynamic spoiler can be reduced by appropriate selection of the spoiler mounting location and deployment scheduling.

  • Classifying the front body of the missile and debris of a high-speed missile in intercepting a high-speed missile is an important issue. The motion of the front body of the missile is characterized by precession, but the motion of the debris in the boosting part separation phase is characterized by tumbling. There are periodic patterns caused by the precession or tumbling motion on the dynamic radar cross section (RCS). In addition, there are statistical properties caused by the change pattern of the dynamic RCS. A method is proposed to classify the front body of the missile and debris using periodic and statistical properties of the dynamic RCS. Three kinds of feature vector are extracted from the periodic and statistical properties of the dynamic RCS. The front body of the missiles and debris was classified using a support vector machine.
