  • This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of rapid and non-des tructive evalution of AV (Acid Value), IV (Iodine Value) and fatty acids in sesame oils. The samples were scanned over the range $400\sim2500nm$ using transmittance spectrum of NIRS(Near-infrared spectroscopy). A calibration equation calculated by MPLS regression technique was developed and correlation coefficient of determination for AV, IV, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid content were 0.9907, 0.9677, 0.9527, 0.9210, 0.9829, 0.9736 and 0.9709 respectively. The validation model for measuring the AV content had R of 0.989, SEP of 0.058 and IV content had R of 0.944, SEP of 0.562 and palmitic acid content had R of 0.924, SEP of 0.194 and stearic acid content had R of 0.717, SEP of 0.168 and oleic acid content had R of 0.989, SEP of 0.221 and linoleic acid content had R of 0.967, SEP of 0.297 and linolenic acid content had R of 0.853, SEP of 0.480 by MPLS. The obtained results indicate that the NIRS procedure can potentially be used as a non-destructive analysis method for the purpose of rapid and simple measurement of AV, IV and fatty acids in sesame oils.

  • In the GTA welding process of Al 7075 alloy using different types of filler metals, the tensile test and micro-hardness test were conducted to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. Also, the radiographic test result showed that the weld met the criterion of level 1 in accordance with KS D 0242 for verifying the welding integrity and there were no welding defects. The tensile test result obtained using Al 7075 as a filler metal showed that the material was fractured in the weld zone. The tensile strengths of the materials using Al 7075 and ER 4043 as the filler metal were about 240MPa and 253MPa, their yield strengths were about 132MPa and 120MPa and their elongation percentages were 6.6% and 13%, respectively. The micro-hardness value of the deposited metal zone when using Al 7075 as the filler metal was Hv 132. However, the micro-hardness of the material using ER4043 as the filler metal was about 24% lower than that using Al 7075. When the chemical composition of the filler metal is the same as that of the material itself, fracture can occur in the deposited metal zone. Therefore, it is not desirable to use the same material as the filler metal for the welding of Al 7075 alloy. Moreover, the use of Al-Si based ER 4043 as a filler metal is more desirable than using the same material as a filler metal for welding Al 7075.

  • Safety inspection of cable-supported bridge has increasingly attention as many cable-supported bridges are currently constructed/operated. Whilst cables as a main component in cable-supported bridge should be inspected regularly, traditional method (visual inspection) has limitation to check the condition of cables properly due to restricted factors. It is evidently necessary to develop cable-inspection robot to overcome this concern. In this respect, the main aim in this study is to manufacture the improved robot compared with the existing robot. The improved functions of the robot in this study were that the robot can be operated in large cable diameter (greater than 200 mm) and climbing ability of the robot increases. In addition, electro-magnetic sensor as a non-destructive method in the robot was added to detect damaged cables and performance of the sensor was evaluated in indoor and field experiments. Consequently, the robot was able to move on the cable with ~0.2m/s and to detect damaged cables using the sensor. It was also confirmed that performance of the robot in field test is similar to that in indoor test.

  • Studies on nondestructive evaluation methods using electromagnetic waves have been commonly conducted to evaluate necking defects in bored piles. However, the propagation of electromagnetic waves are affected by water contents of surrounding materials. This study aims to investigate a suitability of electromagnetic waves for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils through laboratory experiments. Laboratory experiments are performed with a model pile having a necking defect. The diameter and length of model pile are 600 mm and 1 m, respectively, and the model pile is embedded in sandy soils with different water contents of 10%, 20%, and 30%. For the propagation of electromagnetic waves, a transmission line is configured in reinforcement cage using an electrical wire. The generation and detection of electromagnetic waves are conducted using a time domain reflectometer. Experimental results show that the peak amplitude of electromagnetic waves reflected at the necking defect decreases with an increase in the water content in sandy soils. In addition, the velocity of electromagnetic waves reflected from the toe of the model pile decreases win an increase in the water content. However, estimated locations of the necking defects are almost the same to that of the actual location of the necking defect. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves may be an effective method for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils

  • Measurement of compositions and somatic cells in raw milk by chemical methods usually requires a lot of time, skilled labor and expensive analytical equipments. Recently, near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), which is a rapid, cost-effective and non-destructive technique, has been extensively used for safety and quality evaluation in the field of dairy products. However, less study has been performed to evaluate the effect of transmitted light on milk quality during NIRS analysis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the changes in milk quality using transmitted light. Raw milk samples collected from dairy farm from Siga prefecture in Japan were analyzed for fat, protein, lactose, solids not fat, total solids, milk urea and citric acid using the Milko scan 4000. Somatic cells in raw milk samples were counted by the Fossomatic 5000. Transmittance spectra of 50 ml raw milk samples were obtained by the Lax-Cute lighter in the 400 nm or less, 689 nm, 773 nm, 900 nm and 979 nm. As a result, milk fat as well as somatic cell count was increased by 2.6% and 9.0%, respectively. The other compositions were, however, changed within the relative error of the measurement. Further studies are needed to apply raw milk quality evaluation using the UV band by accumulating more samples and more data.

  • We have carried out a nondestructive close examination for the purpose of the structural safety diagnosis of the Three-Story Pagoda(Seokga Pagoda) in Bulkuk temple in the city of Kyungju, Kyungbuk, Korea. Ultrasonic wave velocities were measured at 456 points of the pagoda comprising 44 blocks to estimate the mechanical properties of rock blocks constituting the pagoda. The measured velocities have the range of 1217 to 4403 m/sec with the average of 3227 m/sec. The empirical relationship between the ultrasonic velocity and the uniaxial compressive strength yielded the estimation of strength of each block, ranging from 134 to 844 kg/cm^2 and averaging 463 kg/cm^2. With an assumption that the strength of each block is described as a random variables having a normal distribution, we calculated the probability of failure of rock blocks of the pagoda. Our investigation revealed that the probability of the structural failure due to the weight of higher blocks is very low. However, the probability of partial failure around contact area is substantial, which is consistent with the appearance that edges and the corners of some blocks were broken off. The platform under the body of the pagoda appeared to be structurally weak as the probability of tensile failure of the lower platform is up to 18%, and diagonal fractures are shown where the probability of failure is high.

  • The history of printing technology in Korea is studied by investigating existing ancient documents and records and comparing accumulated data and knowledge. Cultural property research requires non-destructive testing and observation with the naked eye or aided by a microscope. Researchers' experience and knowledge are required even though they cannot guarantee the outcome. For ancient documents and records that are presumed to consist of woodblock printing, wood type printing, metal type printing, or their combinations, each researcher draws various opinions and conclusions. This often causes confusion and divides the opinions of ordinary citizens and field specialists. Among them, the criteria for judging ancient documents or books printed using woodblock and metal movable material are ambiguous. Academic research on the development history of printing technology in ancient Korea has been stagnant, and conflicts among researchers have also erupted. Involvement of national investigative agencies not specialized in cultural properties has exacerbated the situation. In this study, we investigated printing characteristics that are likely to serve as more objective judgment criteria by quantitatively analyzing the experiments of retrieving several sheets of Korean paper (Hanji) using a replicated Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音) woodblock and quantitatively analyzing the images of the printed papers. In addition, the validity and questions for the typical phenomena presented as a method for distinguishing between woodblock and metal print are reviewed. We investigated the possibility of developing new objective judgement criteria through quantitative analysis using image analysis and investigating the printing characteristics of Korean paper through a reproduction experiment of woodblock printing.

  • Accordingly, attention is also being paid to the agricultural use of remote sensing technique that non-destructively and continuously detects the growth and physiological status of crops. However, when remote sensing techniques are used for crop monitoring, it is possible to continuously monitor the abnormality of crops in real time. For this, standard growth information of crops is required and relative growth considering the cultivation environment must be identified. With the relationship between GDD (Growing Degree Days), which is the cumulative temperature related to crop growth obtained from ideal cultivation management, and the vegetation index as standard growth information, compared with the vegetation index observed with the spectralreflectance sensor(SRSNDVI & SRSPRI) in each rice paddy treated with standard cultivation management and non-fertilized, it was quantitatively identified as a time series. In the future, it is necessary to accumulate a database targeting various climatic conditions and varieties in the standard cultivation management area to establish a more reliable standard growth information.

  • In this study we conducted component analyses of portable XRF detectors using four Au-Cu alloy standard samples to improve their accuracy by drawing up a calibration curve based on ICP-OES standard values. The portable XRF analysis found absolute errors of 0.3 to 3.7 wt% for Au and 0.2 to 8.2 wt% for Cu, confirming that the error range and standard deviation differed from one detector to another. Furthermore, the calibration curve improved their accuracy, such that the relative error rates of Au and Cu decreased from 9.8% and 14% to 3.5% and 3.7%, respectively. Accordingly, an experiment to confirm the calibration curve was conducted using unknown samples, finding that the measured values of the unknown samples fell on the calibration curve. Therefore, to accurately analyze the components of metal cultural heritage items, it is necessary to prepare a calibration curve for each element after checking whether the detector is suitable for the artifact.

  • Celestial Chart Stones (original and reproduction) in the National Palace Museum are representative scientific cultural heritage of Korea. Material analysis and nondestructive deterioration assessment were conducted for long-term preservation of these stones. Material analysis revealed that the original was composed of slate and the reproduction was made of dolostone. The original consists of quartz, mica, dolomite minerals, while the reproduction was made up of dolomite, calcite and forsterite. Major deterioration factors of the original stone were cracks and breakouts. In case of the reproduction, scratches and artificial materials were mainly observed. The green and black surface contaminants present at the sides and back of the two celestial chart stones were interpreted as resin-based paint materials. The physical property evaluation using ultrasonic velocity showed a low velocity in the upper left side of the original, while the front right side of the reproduction showed a weak property. Meanwhile, the To-Tc method using ultrasonic velocity was applied to major cracks that impede stability of the original. As a result, it has been calculated that the beginning and the center of the crack are the deepest.
