  • The 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer with 75 volume percents PZT was fabricated by the dicing-filling method. The resonance modes of the 1-3 transducer have been studied with electric impedance measurement as a function of frequency. The fundamental frequencies of the planar and thickness mode were observed at 0.95MHz and 1.63MHz respectively, but the lateral mode was not observed. In the thickness mode, the electromechanical coupling coefficient of the 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer, 0.54, was very closed to that of the single phase PZT(0.52). The pulse-echo response by exciting the 1-3 transducer with an electric pulse was observed from the water/reflector interface, and analyzed bandwidth by the spectrum of the impulse response. The quality factor Q for the 1-3 transducer was observed as 1.5 smaller than that of the single phase(80) and then the 1-3 transducer may be used to the broad band type transducer applications.

  • In this paper, infrared thermography measurement technique has been used to develop standard measurement technique for nondestructive testing of composite materials which is widely used in aerospace industries. To increase the defect detection rate, the related experiment used the lock-in IR-thermographiy method. Therefore it is of considerable interest in the field of non-destructive testing for fast discontinuity detection by using ultrasonic lock-in infrared thermography. The result also shows that as the investigation period of light source is lengthened according to the thickness of specimen, the possibility of detecting defects gets higher as well. However, the reason why the result values were not favorable when less than 50 mHz of light source was provided is because it was difficult to detect defects as the defect parts became a state of thermal equilibrium in general when thermal diffusivity affects the entire materials.

  • Nondestructive neutron activation analysis of copper in high purity Aluminum samples which can be used as a parameter of impurity is investigated and determined. Other 23 trace impurity elements in the samples are also determined. In the analysis of copper, the new irradiation method using thermal column was applied to reduce the interfering activity of 24Na produced by 27Al(n,$\alpha$)24Na reaction induced by fast neutron. As a result, the interference can be reduced to 100 times more than other activation methods. Also the influence by activity of 24Na is found in the range of 2~3 %. It has been observed that the copper contents in so-ratted“six nine”class standard aluminum samples are about 0.54 $\pm$ 0.08 ppm. By the comparison with other values re-ported, our results are reasonable and can be available as a improved routine analysis.

  • In image-based CFD modeling of carotid bifurcation hemodynamics, it is often not possible (or at least not convenient) to impose measured velocity profiles at the common carotid artery inlet. Instead, fully-developed velocity profiles are usually imposed based on measured flow rates. However, some studies reported a pronounced influence of inflow boundary conditions that were based on actual velocity profiles measured by magnetic resonance imaging which showing the unusual presence of a high velocity band in the middle of the vessel during early diastole inconsistent with a Dean-type velocity profile. We demonstrated that those velocity profiles were induced by the presence of modest secondary curvature of the inlet and set about to test whether such more "realistic" velocity profiles might indeed have a more pronounced influence on the carotid bifurcation hemodynamics. We found that inlet boundary condition with axisymmetric fully-developed velocity profile(Womersley flow) is reasonable as long as sufficient CCA inlet length of realistic geometry is applied.

  • Dissimilar metal welds in nuclear power plant are known as very susceptible to PWSCC flaws, and periodically inspected by the qualified inspector and qualified procedure during in-service inspection period. According to field survey data, the majority of their DMWs are located on tapered nozzle or adjacent to a tapered component. These types of configurations restrict examination access and also limit examination volume coverage. Additionally, circumferential scan for axially oriented flaw is very difficult to detect located on tapered surface because the transducer can't receive flaw response from reflector for miss-orientation. To overcome this miss-orientation, it is necessary adapt skewed ultrasonic transducer accomodate tapered surface. The skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer designed by modeling and manufactured from the modelling result for axial flaw detection. Experimental results showed that the skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer get higher flaw response than non-skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer.

  • An investigation has been made on the relationship between characteristics of Acoustic Emission (AE) signal in welding flaw and the stress corrosion defect in-service for the high pressure pipe steel. In order to tackle the problem of welding flaw in high pressure pipe, specimens were made by the aid of the application of both corrosion liquid usage and a quenching method after local heating. The amplitude of signal was $60{\sim}75\;dB$ in the territory which is suspected for defect, and the specimens which only have welding flaw showed gradients of 0.034, 0.034, 0.035. Moreover, there is a certain increase in gradient even though the differences are very slight. That is, corrosion specimens showed new gradients of 0.040, 0.039, 0.041 which put welding flaw and corrosion mechanism together. After pressurizing 3 minutes, AE signal has been detected from welding flaw easily in each part of the section. It is possible to predict the occurrence and also prevent the damage of stress corrosion crack which has characteristics of cleavage fracture.

  • For investigating self-diagnosis applicability, a method based on monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of carbon fiber reinforced concrete has been tested. Then after examining change in the value of electrical resistance at each flexural weight-stage of carbon fiber in CFGFRP (carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforcing plastic) with new type rib and carbon sheet for concrete reinforcing, the correlations of electrical resistance and load as a function of strain, deflection were analyzed. As the results, it is clarified that when carbon fiber rod, rib and sheet fracture, the electrical resistance of it increase largely, and specially in case of CFGFRP, afterwards glass fiber tows can be resist the load due to the presence of the hybrid (carbon and glass) reinforced fiber. Therefore, it can be recognized that reinforcing bar and new type rib of CFGFRP and sheet of CF could be applied for self-diagnosis of fracture in reinforced FRP concrete.

  • Cracks in concrete structures should be measured to periodically assess potential problems in durability and serviceability. Conventional crack measurement systems depend on visual inspections and manual measurements of the crack features such as width, length, and direction using microscope and crack gage. However, conventional methods take long time as well as manpower, and lack quantitative objectivity resulted by inspectors. In this study, an evaluation technique for concrete surface cracks is developed using image processing and artificial neural network. Developed technique consists of three major parts: (1) crack detection (2) crack analysis and (3) pattern recognition. To examine validity of the technique developed in this study, crack analyzing tests were performed on the images obtained from various types of concrete surface cracks. The test results revealed that the system is highly effective in automatically analyzing concrete surface cracks in terms of features and patterns of cracks.

  • In this paper, we reconstructed the cross-sectional images of two phantoms simulating a petrochemical process from gamma radiation measurements. Three different weight functions for EM image reconstruction algorithm were built and compared with histograms representing the variance of the homogeneity of the phantom material, The radiation source, $^{137}Cs$, collimated by a lead with 5 mm diameter aperture and the measurement was made with a lead shielded 1inch NaI detector. As a result, the method taking into account the beam area in each pixel for a weight function showed the best resolution among the three methods.

  • To a series of vibration records obtained from experimental modal testing using a fixed hammer and roving accelerometers for greenhouse arch structures, modal parameters such as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are extracted by applying the two most advanced system identification methods in the frequency-domain up to now, so-called PolyMAX and FDD. The former involves both input and output data, while the latter utilizes only the output data. The possibility of determining the static buckling load, detecting damages, etc., for very slender steel-pipe arches by means of a non-destructive testing method based on vibration measurements is primarily investigated. The extracted modal parameters generally correlated well with those obtained using finite element analysis, demonstrating promising results for further on-going research.
