  • In the controller design of position or velocity control system, the flexibility of the mechanical system is always the limiting factor to the higher performance. Most mechanical systems coupled with rotary shaft are 2-Inertia systems which are consist of motor and load inertia. These inertias make a torsion In rotary shaft and cause torsional vibration. To suppress vibration, various control strategies have been proposed mainly for controlling 2-inertia system. In this paper, a speed controller design for a 2-inertia system composed of voltage controlled DC motor and load inertia is made by using CDM(coefficient diagram method). First, the 2-inertia system model is derived. Then the CDM is used to design the proper controller. A validity of this approach is confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

  • Composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been widely used in civil engineering practice as an alternative of conventional pre-stressed concrete box-girder because the efficiency of pre-stressing can be increased and weight reduction of superstructure can be achieved by replacing concrete webs as a corrugated steel webs. However, most of previous researches were limited in shear and flexural behavior of such girder so that the torsional behaviors of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs are not fully understood yet and it needs to be investigated. Some of previous researchers developed the nonlinear theory for torsional analysis of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs. However, their theories were developed by ignoring the tensile behavior of concrete. Thus, there are certain limitations in analysis of serviceability such as cracking moment and torsional stiffness of the girder. This paper presents the analytical model for torsional behavior of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs considering tensile behavior of concrete. Based on the proposed analytical model, nonlinear torsional analysis program of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed. Then, for verification of validation of the developed model, test for the girder was conducted and the results were compared with those of analytical model. Finally, parametric study was conducted and the effects of tensile behavior of concrete on the torsional behavior of the girder were discussed.

  • Because of earthquakes that have recently struck, seismic design criteria that considered performance of structure were included in the design concepts. Thus, a simple analysis tool is needed to predict the strength and ductility of RC structures. In this study, three-dimensional lattice model was developed to expand the two-dimensional lattice model. Torsional analysis of the structure was done to evaluate the developed three-dimensional lattice model. Lattice model was evaluated by comparing analytical results with experimental results. Lattice element size was evaluated using the results of analysis. Torsional analysis results, using three-dimensional lattice model, show that the results are relatively consistent with the experimental values.

  • The purpose of the present study is to propose a realistic method to analyze the prestressed concrete members subjected to long term torsional loading. The present study devises a method to realistically take into account the tensile stiffness of concrete after cracking. The effects of biaxial compressive and tensile loadings on the compressive and tensile strengths of concrete are also taken into account in the present model. The salient feature of the present study lies in the fact that the cracking, creep, and shrinkage behavior of concrete and the relaxation of steel have been realistically considered. The comparison of the present theory with experimental data indicates that the proposed model dipicts reasonably well the actual behavior of prestressed concrete members under long-term torsional loadings.

  • A torsional guided wave mode was applied to detect a crack in a pipe. An array of electromagnetic acoustic transduce. (EMAT that can generate and receive torsional guided ultrasound with the frequency of 200kHz was designed and fabricated for testing a pipe of 2.5 inch diameter Artificial notches with various depths were fabricated in a bent feeder pipe mock-up and the detectability was examined from the distance of 2m of the specimen. The axial notches with the depth of 5% of wall thickness were successfully detected by a torsional mode (T(0,1)) generated by the EMAT However, it was found that the depth of defects was not related to the signal amplitude.

  • The equipment or with a constant torque and a variable stress due to axial vibration such as the turbine-generator system in nuclear power plant show the fatigue fracture behavior. Thus this study whoul aim to measure the torsional stress and analyze the fatigue fracture behavior. To achieve this, we manufactured the equipment similar with turbine-generator system and applied various torsional vibration stress due to external load. In particular, the evaluation was conducted with the existing evaluation methods of the fatigue behavior of known stress-life, strain-life, crack growth assessment methods. With increasing the external load and independent methods tends to decrease the fatigue life was confirmed up to 10 times in 5 kV external load compared to without external load.

  • Shear test procedure for concrete-dowel interaction was proposed along with determination of dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant using the spreadsheet example. For this task, three AASHTO-type standard specimens were prepared to simulate behavior of the jointed concrete pavement. A side support system was adopted to minimize twisting of the test specimen which had been observed in a preliminary test. A typical elastic behavior of the dowel-concrete interaction was observed from several test loops of loading, unloading and reloading procedures. However load versus slab displacement represents to be nonlinear. Test results show that the dowel support reaction factor ranges from 550-880 GN/m3, which is 1.4-2.2 times greater than 407GN/m3 proposed by Yoder and Witczak. This is because less torsional distraction was occurred with the help of a side support system adopted in this experiment. The dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant obtained from the procedures proposed in this paper may be used as a reference data for the structural analysis of jointed concrete pavement.

  • Torque fluctuation of an engine and angular velocity variation of a propeller shaft are the main excitation sources in the vehicle driveline. This paper presents brief mechanism of these excitation sources. Equivalent models of these systems are construced to simulate the excitation source. The computer simulation was carried out by ARLA Simul v 6.7 and ARLA-Simstat v 2.3. Results of the simulations show the characteristics of torsional excitation source of the driveline. Experimental setups for engine system and propeller shaft system are constructed with component of the vehicle. Torque fluctuation of the flywheel and angular velocity of the propeller shaft were measured from this experimental setups. Experimental results are compared with simulation results. The results from experimental analysis agree with those from theoretical results.

  • This paper proposed a new design equation for the inelastic lateral torsional buckling (LTB) of singly symmetric stepped I-beams with non-compact flange sections. The proposed equation was generated using a finite element program, ABAQUS, and a statistical program, MINITAB. The parameters used were the stepped beams parameters; ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, and ${\gamma}$ and the length-to-height ratio ($L_b/h$) of the beam. The proposed equation was further validated by means of experimental test, where beams were subjected to four-point bending and supported by roller and lateral braces near the end supports. In addition, finite element models were simulated using the same parameters used in the experimental test to verify the results of the test conducted. It was proved that LTB capacity calculated from the proposed equation is accurate and conservative in comparison with the yielded values from the FEM and actual test, making it a reliable and safe approach in calculating the buckling capacities of singly symmetric stepped beams with non-compact flange sections.
