  • Torsional vibration is an important vibration mode when shafts, cylinders and pipes are considered. However, the modal testing of torsional vibrations is not an easy task to carry out because of the lack of proper transducers. This work presents a new torsional vibration transducer based on the magnetostrictive principle and its application to torsional modal testing. The transducer is so designed as to generate/measure only torsional vibrations excluding other vibration modes such as longitudinal and bending vibrations. The transducer is composed of ferromagnetic patches bonded to a test structure, permanent magnets, and a solenoid. Though patches and magnets are bonded to a structure, torsional vibrations are generated and measured wirelessly by a solenoid encircling a test structure. The proposed transducer works even at considerably high frequencies, say, tens of kilohertz. Furthermore, the transducer can be manufactured at a low price. To check the performance of the proposed method, the torsional modal testing on a hollow aluminum shaft was conducted. The results, such as eigenfrequencies, obtained by the proposed transducer agreed favorably with theoretical results.

  • This research investigated the influence of the number of twist on single fiber pullout behavior of Twisted steel (T-) fiber and tensile behavior of high performance cementitious composites reinforced with the (T-) fibers (HPFRCC). Micromechanical pullout model for T- fibers has been applied to analytically investigate the influence of various fiber parameters including the number of twist on single fiber pullout behavior; and, to optimize the number of twist to generate larger pullout energy during fiber pullout without fiber breakage. In addition, an experimental program including single fiber pullout and tensile tests has been performed to investigate the influence of twist ratio experimentally. Two types of T- fiber with different twisted ratios, T(L)- fiber (6ribs/30 mm) and T(H)- fiber (18ribs/30 mm), were tested. T(L)- fiber produced higher equivalent bond strength (larger pullout energy) although T(H)- fiber produced higher pullout stress during pullout since T(H)- fiber showed fiber breakage during pullout. Tensile test results confirmed that T(L)- fiber in high strength mortar generates better tensile performance of HPFRCC, e.g., load carrying capacity, strain capacity and multiple micro-cracking behavior.

  • Cylindrical structures such as pipes and shafts are widely used in various industrial facilities. Recently, researches on magnetostrictive transduction of torsional waves have been actively reported for the nondestructive evaluation of those cylindrical structures. However, the existing magnetostrictive patch transducer has somewhat inconvenient and time.consuming process like patch bonding to a structure since it should employ a magnetostrictive patch having strong magnetostriction. To overcome these limitations of the existing transducer, in this work, we develop a novel modular magnetostrictive transducer to generate and measure torsional waves to inspect a cylindrical structure. The proposed transducer can be applied as viscous liquid coupling with shear couplant or dry coupling without coupling media instead of patch bonding to a structure. We describe a detailed structure of the modular transducer and conduct some experiments to verify its performance.

  • A self-centering energy-dissipative(SCED) bracing system has recently been developed as a new seismic force resistant bracing system. The advantage of the SCED brace system is that, unlike other comparable advanced bracing systems that dissipate energy such as the buckling restrained brace(BRB) system, it has a self-centering capability that reduces or eliminates residual building deformations after major seismic events. In order to investigate the effects of torsion on the SCED brace and BRB systems, nonlinear time history analyses were used to compare the responses of 3D model structures with three different amounts of frame eccentricity. The results of the analysis showed that the interstory drifts of SCED braced frames are more uniform than those of BRB frames, without regard to irregularity. The residual drift and residual rotation responses tended to decrease as irregularity increased. For medium-rise structures, the drift concentration factors(DCFs) for SCED systems were lower than those for BRB frames. This means that SCED-braced frames deform in a more uniform manner with respect to building height. The effect of the torsional irregularity on the magnitude of the DCFs was small.

  • An investigation has been made on the relationship between characteristics of torsional mode signal in MsS and SH mode signal in BEM modeling for the defect of stainless steel pipe. In order to compare torsional mode signal with SH mode signal of defect in stainless steel pipe, specimens were made by changing size of depth and width along to circumferential direction 360 degrees. All the defects was detected by torsional mode signal of MsS, especially according to the change of depth size, amplitude of signal was changed. But width change for the circumferential defects has no certain tendency. SH mode signal of BEM modeling shows similar results with torsional mode, with change makes amplitude variation of signal. In this paper, the characteristics of torsional mode and SH mode signals were found. It is possible to predict the circumferential defects for the pipe by SH mode modeling.

  • Development of a curvic-coupling was presented in this paper. The research covers design, structural analysis, hot-temperature-torsion-test, curvic-coupling applied proto-type turbine disk manufacturing, and assembly test of a curvic-coupling rotor system for the turbopump application. Curvic-coupling was designed based on the Gleason-standard-tooth shape. The load capability of the designed curvic coupling was validated by the structural analysis and hot-temperature-torsion-test. A proto-type turbine disk which had adopted designed curvic-coupling was manufactured, assembled and tested to reveal that shaft-disk assembly run-outs in axial and radial directions were much smaller than the design requirements. The development will be finalized after spin test of shaft-disk assembly in near future.

  • Using holographic interferometry, strain distributions for a cantilever beam subjected to the eccentric force can be analysed. Holographic fringe pattern shows inclined straight lines for the composite deformation of bending and torsion. Using these inclinations of the fringe pattern, 3rd order polynomial of plane displacements can be determined without difficulty. As the result, both of axial and shear strain distribution can be obtained from the second partial derivatives of this polynomial. These results agree well with FEM.

  • The vibration analysis of rotating inward beams considering the pre-twisted is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The frequency equations, are calculated using hybrid deformation variable modeling along with the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode methods. In this study, resulting system of ordinary differential equations shows the effects of angular speed, and Young's modulus ratio. It is believed that the results will be a reference with which other researchers and commercial FE analysis program, ANSYS can compare their result.
