  • Using the genetic algorithm, the optimal-design technique of the Nielsen arch bridge was proposed in this paper. The design parameters were the arch-rise ratio and the steel weight ratio of the Nielsen arch bridge, and optimal-design techniques were utilized to analyze the behavior of the bridge. The optimal parameter values were determined for the estimated optimal level. The parameter determination requires the standardization of the safety, utility, and economic concepts as the critical factors of a structure. For this, a genetic algorithm was used, whose global-optimal-solution search ability is superior to the optimization technique, and whose object function in the optimal design is the total weight of the structure. The constraints for the optimization were displacement, internal stress, and time and space. The structural analysis was a combination of the small displacement theory and the genetic algorithm, and the runtime was reduced for parallel processing. The optimal-design technique that was developed in this study was employed and deduced using the optimal arch-rise ratio, steel weight ratio, and optimal-design domain. The optimal-design technique was presented so it could be applied in the industry.

  • The primary purpose of using bracings is to improve the lateral rigidity of main structural system, i.e., columns and beams, by reinforciing them with much smaller members. In conventional design methods brackings are considered as tension-only members, since difficulties arise in the analysis when the P-.DELTA. effects and post-buckling behaviour of the bracing members are taken into account. This is particulary true fox X-bracings. Recently, however, both analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the more precise and real behaviour of bracing members, especially for the nonlinear and plastic behaviour under cyclic loads. In this study, an analytical model is proposed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of steel bracing members subjected to cyclic loads. Results of the analysis were compared with previous experimental results, and good agreements were obtained between these results.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a reasonable analytical method for the reinforced concrete beams which shows failure mode of shear and flexure-shear by proposing a modified formulation to consider the effect of shear deformation on the beam-column fiber element based on the flexibility method and a new constitutive law of inelastic shear response history for the section. A total of 6 specimens of reinforced concrete beams which is designed to cause shear failure before yielding longitudinal reinforcement to investigate the influence of the main experimental variables on the shear behavior characteristics and the analysis was performed by using a non-linear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST) applying the newly modified constitutive equation by the authors. The failure mode and the overall behavior characteristics until fracture are predicted appropriately for all specimens and the results are expected to be useful enough for the 3 - D analysis to carry out reliable results of large-scale and complicated structures in the future.

  • The current specifications for bridge decks requires the same amount of upper and lower reinforcement mats. There have been many empirical activities that the partial elimination of upper reinforcing bars was not caused the structural integrity of a deck. A simplified method is derived based on thin plate theory for three and four-girder-span bridge decks. A simplified method for bridge deck considering the effect of girder deflection is proposed based on a closed-form solution that shows good agreement with the results of finite element models. In this research, a new design approach for deck slabs is proposed based on the simplified method. The negative bending moments in a deck can be evaluated with the simplified method based on the position of a wheel load, the aspect ratio and relative stiffness and the span length. This new approach can lead to a significant reduction of the quantity of the top reinforcing steel bars in a deck. Reducing the quantify of the top reinforcement not only reduces the construction costs for bridge decks, but also reduces the corrosion of reinforcement to a minimum.

  • This paper presents an analytic method and a design technique for golf shoes with air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are modeled using the finite element method for better design by considering the configuration of the midsole and the outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size and shape of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. The values or standard human pressure for boundary conditions are adopted for the FEA(Finite Element Analysis). The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for the midsole and the outsole are obtained, respectively. It can be concluded that results obtained by FEM in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer The results reported herein provide better understanding of analyzing the golf shoes. Moreover, it is believed that those properties of the results can be utilized in the shoes industry to develop the effective design method.

  • A new slab design using secant stiffness, Direct Inelastic Slab Design, was developed. Since basically the proposed design method uses linear analysis, it is convenient and stable in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the inelastic strength and ductility demands of slab because it can analyzes the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculations for secant stiffness. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and compared with traditional nonlinear analysis, and experiments. The Direct Inelastic Slab Design, as an integrated analysis/design method, can directly address the design strategy intended by the engineer, such as moment strength and ductility limit. As a result, economical and safe design can be achieved.

  • The estimation of surface settlement, ground behavior and tunnel displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel design with shallow depth and unconsolidated soil. On deformation analysis of shallow tunnel, it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigated the effects of key design parameter affecting deformation behavior by numerical analysis using nonlinear model incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters with the increment of the maximum shear strain after the initiation of plastic yielding. Numerical parametric studies are carried out to consider the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters, horizontal stress ratio, cohesion and shotcrete thickness.

  • This paper described the general dynamic point for rotor design and the design procedure of low vibration blade. Generally, rotor rotating natural frequencies are determined to minimize hub loads, blade vibration and to suppress ground resonance at rotor design stage. First, through rotor frequency diagram, natural frequencies must be far away from resonance point and rotating loads generated from blade can be transformed to non-rotating load to predict fuselage vibration. Vibration level was predicted at each forward flight condition by calculating cockpit's vertical acceleration transferred from non-rotating hub load assuming a fuselage as a rigid body. This design method is applied to design current Next-generation Rotor System Blade(NRSB) and will be applied to New Rotor which will be developed Further.

  • In order to promote the efficient use of composite materials, effort is currently being directed at the development of design criteria for composite structures. Insofar as design against buckling is concerned, it is well known that, for metal shells, a key step is the definition of 'knockdown' factors on the elastic critical buckling stress accounting mainly for the influence of initial geometric imperfections. At present, the imperfection sensitivity of composite shells has not been explored in detail. Due to the large number of parameters influencing buckling response (considerably larger than for isotropic shells), a very large number of tests would be needed to quantify imperfection sensitivity experimentally. An alternative approach is to use validated numerical models for this task. Thus, the objective of this paper is to outline the underlying theory used in developing a composite shell element and to present results from a validation exercise and subsequently from a parametric study on axially loaded glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) curved panels using finite element modelling. Both eigenvalue and incremental analyses are performed, the latter including the effect of initial geometric imperfection shape and amplitude, and the results are used to estimate 'knockdown' factors for such panels.
