Effect of Particle Size and Mixing Ratio on Quality of Fluidized Coated Vitamin C (입자크기와 혼합비에 따른 유동층 코팅 비타민 C의 품질 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the stability and the processing property of vitamin C. Vitamin C was coated according to particle size(80-100 mesh, 100-140 mesh) and mixing ratio(1:1.6, 1:2.5, 1:3(w/w)) with coating solution(8% Zein-DP, 6% HPMC-FCC), and then the quality characteristics of fluidized bed micro coated vitamin C were investigated. The coating efficiency and the thickness of coating film were higher in $80{\sim}100$ mesh particle than in $100{\sim}140$ mesh particles, and coating efficiency was decreased as the coating material was increased. The distribution range of particle was more narrow in mixing ratio of 1:3(w/w) than in the other. DPPH radical scavenging activity was not affected by the particle size and the mixing ratio. There was no difference between the coating materials in terms of the quality characteristics. The optimum coating condition for fluidized bed micro-coating of vitamin C powder was selected as the particle size of $80{\sim}100$ mesh and the mixing ratio with coating solution of 1:3(w/w).

Cariogenicity of Vitamin Supplements for Children (시판용 어린이 비타민 보충 제제의 치아 우식원성)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the cariogenicity of vitamin supplements for children by the Caries Potentiality Index (CPI), pH drop capacity, proliferation rate of Streptococcus mutans. Four vitamin supplements were selected - Noma (NM), Cenovis Kids (CK), Animal Parade (AP), and Character Vitamin (CV). CPI value decreased in the order of AP, CV, CK, and NM. Initial values of all experimental groups showed acidity below pH 7.0. Analysis of the colony forming units of Streptococcus mutans showed that NM and CV resulted a higher proliferation rate (p < 0.05) than CK and AP (p < 0.05). Bacterial activity of the control group was lower than other groups when observed with a confocal laser scanning microscope. Considering the bacterial activity and acidity of vitamin supplements, it is necessary to pay close attention when children taken the vitamin supplements for their oral health.

Effects of the Dietary Mixture of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver on Osteoporosis (두충[Eucommia ulmoides Oliver] 조성물이 골다공증에 미치는 효과)

  • Inhibitory effects of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver against osteoporosis were studied with ovaryectomized rats. The diet mixture A of calcium, vitamin D$_3$, and vitamin K$_1$and the additional mixture B with extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver were fed for 7 months to ovaryectomized rats. The urine content of pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline was used as bone biochemical markers. Concentrations of deoxypyridinoline of ovaryectomized rats fed with the mixture A and B decreased 9.0% and 26.9%, respectively, when they were compared to the ovaryectomized control. The trabecular bone areas of proximal tibias of ovaryectomized rats were measured and compared to the ovaryectomized control. The areas fed with the mixture A and B increased 9.9% and 42.0%, respectively, that proved the inhibitory effect of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver against osteoporosis.

Effects of the Dietary Mixture of Isoflavone on Osteoporosis (이소플라본 조성물이 골다공증에 미치는 효과)

  • Inhibitory effects of isoflavone against osteoporosis were studied with ovaryectomized rats. The diet mixture A of calcium, vitamin D$_3$, and vitamin K$_1$ and an additional mixture B with isoflavone were fed for 7 months to ovaryectomized rats. The contents of deoxypyridinoline in the urine of rats fed with the mixture A and B decreased 9.0% and 29.5%, respectively. The trabecular bone areas of proximal tibias of ovaryectomized rats fed with the mixture A and B were measured and compared to the control. They increased 9.9% and 15.8%, respectively, that proved the inhibitory effect of isoflavone against osteoporosis.

  • Tocopherol, Se and garlic powder were dieted to hatched chick breeding. The Se content of certain organs is influenced by garlic powder supply. The high Se content for the testis was a function of the vitamin E uptake. Effect of low dose of Se on the growth and survival of rat were examined under the diet of $2\;{\mu}g/ml$ of Se in drinking water either in the form of $Na_2SeO_3$ or $Na_2SeO_4$. The females were dead in early ages while the males were not influenced by dieting the selenite did not make males dying rapidly at early ages and males were less growth depressed. The previously known fact that garlic act as a tonics may be attributable to its high contents of Se and sulfur-containing amino acids which are closely related to vitamin E. Further details on the dietary mechanisms of the Se, vitamin E, and garlic powder are described in this paper.

Effect of Ethanol on the Protolytic Properties of the Vitamins B Group

  • A multiwavelength spectrophotometric titration method was applied to study protolytic constants of four water-soluble vitamins, folic acid(vitamin B9 or B0), thiamine(vitamin B1), riboflavin(vitamin B2) and pyridoxal (vitamin B6) in binary ethanol-water mixtures at 25oC and an ionic strength of 0.1M NaNO3. The protolytic equilibrium constants, spectral profiles, concentration diagrams and also the number of components has been calculated from the curve fitting of the pH-absorbance data with appropriate mass balance equations by an established factor analysis model. DATAN program was used for determination of acidity constant and SPECFIT program was used for calculation of standard deviations and partial correlation coefficients. A glass electrode calibration procedure based on the four parameter equation pH=α+SpcH+JH+[H+]+ JOH-Kw/[H+] based on the Gran,s plots was used to obtain pH-readings in the concentration scale (pcH). The effect of the solvent on the protolytic constants was discussed.

Influence of Cooking on Carotenoid Contents in Provitamin A-Biofortified Rice (가열조리에 따른 프로비타민 A 강화 쌀의 카로티노이드 함량)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different cooking methods on the carotenoid content in genetically modified(GM) provitamin A-biofortified rice. The proximate components (moisture, protein, lipid, and ash) of GM rice were similar to those of conventional non-GM rice. Provitamin A-biofortified rice was cooked in various ways, including boiling in water and steaming/roasting. Carotenoid composition was determined by HPLC. Total carotenoid contents of provitamin A-biofortified brown and milled rice were $122.79{\mu}g/100g$ and $125.44{\mu}g/100g$, respectively. Compared with raw unprocessed samples, boiling caused approximately 20% carotenoid loss. In contrast, seaming/roasting decreased carotenoid content by 78%.

Clinical characteristics of vitamin D deficiency rickets in infants and preschool children (비타민 D 결핍성 구루병 영.유아의 임상적 특징)

  • Purpose : Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a significant public health problem that results from insufficient exposure to sunlight and inadequate vitamin D supplementation. The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical characteristics of vitamin D deficiency rickets in infants. Methods : Data of 35 infants diagnosed as vitamin D deficiency rickets at Sanggye-Paik Hospital, Seoul, Korea, from March 2007 to May 2009 were reviewed. Children with plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels <15 ng/mL and 15-30 ng/mL were considered to have vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D insufficiency, respectively. Results : Thirty-five infants (22 boys, 13 girls) were diagnosed with rickets. Mean age at diagnosis was $7.4{\pm}7.1$ months (range: 0.1-29.8 months). Eighteen infants (51%) were vitamin D deficient and seventeen infants (49%) were insufficient. Twenty-eight of all (80%) diagnosed as subclinical rickets. Twenty-nine infants (83%) were below the age of 12months. Twenty infants (57%) had breastfed and ten infants (29%) had iron deficiency anemia. Nine of breastfed infants (45%) were vitamin D deficient and ten of their mothers were vitamin D insufficient. Overall, radiographic evidence of rickets was present in 93% of the cases. Radiographic sign of rickets was evident even in vitamin D insufficient state. Conclusion : It is important for the clinician to screen for subclinical vitamin D deficiency rickets in inadequately supplemented infants by pairing 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with wrist radiographs. A nationwide epidemiological study of vitamin D deficiency rickets must be conducted and evidence-based national guidelines must be defined to prevent rickets.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency after a Total Gastrectomy in Patients with Gastric Cancer (위암으로 위 전절제술 후 비타민 Bl2 결핍과 치료)

  • Purpose: The most common metabolic defect appearing following a gastrectomy is anemia. Two types have been identified: One is related to a deficiency in iron and the other is related to an impairment in vitamin B12 metabolism. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency after a total gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: Serum vitamin B12 concentrations were measured in 128 patients who had undergone a total gastrectomy. The group with a serum concentration under 200 pg/ml was supplemented at one-month intervals with Actinamide and five-six months later, serum concentrations of the vitamin B12 were rechecked. Results: The group with vitamin B12 under 200 pg/ml was 61 (47.6%) of the 128 patients who had undergone a total gastrectomy. In this group, the cumulative incidences of vitamin B12 deficiency were 7.0, 23.4, 33.6, 39.1, 41.4, and 47.7% at 6 months, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 or more years, respectively. The treated group with vitamin B12 under 200 pg/ml had 36 (28.17%) of the 128 patients. The 16 of those cases with vitamin B12 levels of $100{\sim}150\;pg/ml$ were supplemented 5.21 times and the vitamine B12 was elevated to above 650 pg/ml. The other 20 cases with an average of vitamin B12 levels of $150{\sim}200pg/ml$ were supplemented an average of 4.75 times, and the vitamin B12 was elevated to above 780 pg/ml. Conclusion: It is necessary to supplement vitamin B12 even 1 year later after a total gastrectomy. The group with vitamin B12 under 200 pg/ml was supplemented $5{\sim}6$ times at one-month intervals with Actinamide $1,000\;{\mu}g$ IM injections and reached normal levels. Effects of Oral Vitamins on the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment (비타민 보충제 영양강화요법이 경도인지기능장애 노인에게 미치는 효과)

  • As the elderly population increases, the prevalence of various geriatric chronic diseases and dementia diseases is also rapidly increasing; accordingly, dementia is becoming a major concern of our society. In this study, 48 elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment located in K district were selected from a group of experimental groups in one building and a control group in one building and evaluated for blood homocysteine levels and cognitive function changes after 4,8, and 12 weeks of taking vitamin supplements. The Chi-squared test, Fisher's Exact test, independent t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, contrast test, repeated measures ANCOVA, and Wilks' lambda test were utilized to analyze the data. The results revealed that the cognitive function of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group at 12 weeks (p<0.05), and so, the experimental group higher than that of the control group (p<0.01), the effect of taking vitamins was significantly increased, indicating that homocysteine was decreased relative to the control group. Therefore, vitamin supplements may prevent decreases in cognitive functions and dementia among elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment.
