  • Unsteady heat conduction in stacked disks in a furnace has been numerically solved The effects of relevant parameters such as disk spacing, aspect ratio, environmental temperature, Biot nember, etc. have been investigated. The highest temperature appears at the disk edge and the lowest at the center. Penetration of heat form the surface to the center requires some time. Heating should be slow for uniform temperature rise. Geometric parameters complicates the radiative and conductive heat transfer. Though the resulting dependence of temperature nonuniformity on various parameters is complicated, high uniformity of temperature is in general available by low Biot number and/or low environmental temperature.

  • In this study are determined the unsteady temperature and thermal stress fields for a domestic 4-cylinder, 4-cycle gasoline engine cylinder head by the three-dimensional finite element method. A representative part of the cylinder head is modelled as a combination of hexahedron isoparametric elements, and the time-dependent temperature and the heat transfer coefficient of the gas are imposed as the thermal boundary conditions for the engine speeds of 500 rpm and 2000 rpm. The obtained results, which are represented graphically, indicate that the amplitudes of temperature fluctuation during a cycle are about 10.deg. C and 3.deg. C respectively on the surface of combustion chamber, and the maximum temperature fields occur at 30.deg. , 10.deg. respectively before the initiation of the exhaust stroke. Thermal stress fields due to non-uniform temperature distributions show that compressive stress is much larger than tensile stress throughout a cycle. It is also found that the compressive stress varies with substantial amplitude between the exhaust port and ignition plug hole, and the high tensile stress with small fluctuation occurs between exhaust port and the adjacent head bolt hole.

  • The unsteady, two-dimensional laminar flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, constant-property fluid flowing around a circular cylinder are numerically analyzed. The Navier-Strokes equation and the energy equation are solved by the finite difference method. The range of the Reynolds number is 10 to 100 and the Prandtl number considered is 0.7. The contours of the flow pattern, equi-vorticity line and isotherm pattern around a circular cylinder are shown. Also, numerical solutions of the surface vorticity, pressure coefficient, drag coefficient, local Nusselt number and mean Nusselt number are obtained. The numerical results for the final time fo calculation are compared with the other available experimental and theoretical results for the steady state and are found to be in good agreement with them.

  • Transient heat transfer characteristics of cooling of a spherical body were investigated in the radiatively active spherical medium. Initially the spherical body and the medium were maintained at their constant temperatures. Then heat transfer begins from spherical body t medium. The heat transfer mode inside the spherical body is just conduction. But heat is transferred by both conduction and radiation inside the medium. All thermodynamic properties were held constant in time. Spherical symmetry is assumed. DOM was adopted to solve RTE. The effect of characteries-tic optical thickness, conduction to radiation parameters, and solid surface emissivity has been studied.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the details of unsteady heat transfer in a heated fire door. This investigation is carried out numerically for two dimensional fire door which is composed of normal plasterboard and mild steel including air layer or heat shield. It is shown from the results that the recirculation occurs at the inner part of fire wall due to gravity force by temperature difference. The case I gives better adiabatic effect than the case II because temperature around the fire wall reachs at $230.96^{\circ}C$ in the case I and reachs at $450.37^{\circ}C$ in the case II.

  • In this paper, the unsteady state calculational model is proposed for the thermal stratification analysis in the feedwater line of the PWR plant. By defining dimensionless parameters in the two-dimensional polar coordinate system and applying SIMPLE algorithm, the temperature and flow profiles due to the thermal stratification are obtained. Base on the fact that the most significant condition occurs when the fluid temperature difference between the piping ends reaches as high as 166.deg. C, the present result shows that max. Dimensionless temperature difference of 0.6 (about l00.deg. C) obtained between hot and cold sections of pipe wall at dimensionless time 47.0.

  • "Ondol" have been used in residential buildings for several thousands years in Korea. The traditional "Ondol" heating system of Korea has changed into the radiant heating system with piping embedded in floors or slabs. This study reports the results of transient experiments performed on a radiant heating system and enclosure. The paper presents some details of the thermal response of slab-heated buildings to varying patterns of heat input. Furthermore, I'll compare the results of experimentation with the ones of the numerical simulation by using the explicit and implicit forms of the finite difference methods (FDM). The study has contributed to testify the feasibility of numerical analysis, and the understanding of the transient behavior of radiant heating panels and enclosure exposed to this type of heating system.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a numerical method for analyzing the transient heat transfer and evaluating the residual stress. The analysis of heat transfer and thermal stress are carried out by three-dimensional finite element method. Thermal spraying is one of the most common surface coating techniques to be used for many applications. In order to improve the mechanical properties of flame-sprayed ceramic coating layer, the accurate and effective analysis of heat transfer and thermal stress is essentially required.

  • Hyperthermia using transrectal thermal probes has been used for a noninvasive treatment of prostate diseases. However it is known that heating the rectal wall at excessively high temperature can lead to destruction of the rectal mucous membrane. and it is difficult to maintain an optimum temperature over the entire prostate. Thus, a more accurate understanding of the heat transfer mechanism between prostate and hyperthermia system is needed Numerical analysis was performed to investigate how the cold/warm stimulations on the prostate surface affect the temperature distribution in the prostate model. The general purpose software "FLUENT" was used for obtaining a finite volume solution to the unsteady conduction equation and to calculate the time-varying temperature in the prostate. Effects of the warm/cold stimulations and the stimulation frequency on the temperature distribution were simulated. and we visualized how hyperthermia affected the inside of the prostate. It was found that the effect of hyperthermia by using a typical heating method is limited due to the low thermal conductivity of the prostate. Consecutive repetitions of warm and cold stimulations were considered to provide the thermal irritations inside a prostate. The effects of temperature difference and duration of warm/cold stimulations were investigated, and basic data for the optimum period and effective patterns of stimulations were obtained. A simplified bioheat equation was also solved to describe effects of the blood flow on the blood-tissue heat transfer. The effect of blood flow was not dominant compared to that of warm/cold stimulations. These results might be used as data for design of prostate treating probe, prostatic therapy and thermal stimulation effects on the prostate.

  • Numerical inverstigation of heat transfer in phase-change energy storage devices was performed in order to aid In the design process for a finned Phase-Change Material( PCM). A simplified model based on a quasi-linear, transient, thin fin equation, which predicts the fraction of melted phase-change material, and the shape of liquid-solid interface as a function of time, is used. The model is solved by using Finite Volume Method(FVM), and the numerical results have showed good agreement with experimental data.
