This paper presents the displacement sensor based on astigmatic method that has a small measurement range. The sensor has the characteristic that the measuring range is changed easily by exchanging a objective lens or distance between a objective lens and a collimator lens. The measuring range and resolution is evaluated by a laser interferometer.

The displacement sensor using optical pickup head is presented. The measuring principle of optical pickup head in focusing direction is adopted to measure displacement. The preliminary tests were carried out to verify the feasibility of the optical pickup head as a displacement sensor and optical pickup head showed about $8\;{\mu}m$ measuring range and 10nm resolution. The methodology to expand measuring range is proposed and proved its validity. The proposed displacement sensors are applied to AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) probe head to measure the deflection of micro-cantilever.
In the case of an imaging system affected by aberrations which are not precisely known, the effect of aberrations can be minimized and near-diffraction-limited images can be restored by introducing artificial random phase fluctuations in the exit pupil of the imaging system and using bispectral speckle imaging. In order to determine the optimum value of the correlation length for Gaussian random phase model, computer simulation is performed for 50 image frames of a point object in the presence of defocus, spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism of 1 wave, respectively. In terms of the criterion of performance, the FWHM of the point spread function, normalized peak intensity, MTF and visual inspection of the restored object are employed. The optimum value for the rms difference $\sigma$ of aberration on the exit pupil in the interval of Fried parameter ${\Upsilon}_0$ is given by 0.27-0.53 wave for spherical aberration, and 0.24-0.36 wave for defocus and astigmatism, respectively. It is found that the bispectral speckle imaging technique does not give good results in the case of coma.
We analyzed the variation of the focus error signal with the effect of land and groove, wavefront error, and optical system parameter variation for the knife-edge and astigmatism methods on the Land/Groove recordable optical disc, using a numerical simulation method. We verified causes of the zero-cross-shift that took place by the effect of land and groove by analyzing the diffraction beam including defocus wavefront errors. We also found that the sensitivty of the focus error signal was reduced by the effect of land and groove in the astigmatism method, as in the analysis of the focus error signal with the each order of the diffraction beam.
To design three-mirror telescope system (F/8, 120 inch in focal length) for visible and infra-red band imaging, methods for power configuring and correction of the third order aberrations were studied. In the design of the telescope system, a three-mirror system corrected for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism was used for infra-red imaging, and the aberrations were corrected by using conic surfaces. For visible imaging, a singlet corrector lens was appended at the front of the focal plane to correct filed curvature. The telescope system has diffraction limited performance for 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in wavelength within 2.4$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view. In the visible band imaging, the rms spot size of the telescope system is less than 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ within 3$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view for monochromatic light, and the telescope system satisfies flat field condition for CCD application.

The 3rd generation optical pick-up used popularly in resent years is composed of many optical and electronic components such as laser diode, photo diode, beam splitter, objective lens, grating lens, concave lens, collimator lens etc. Therefore, the design of its optical system and its main base which the said optical and electronic components are set on, is complicated and needs high precision. Its assembly and adjustment in the production line is also difficult. This complication and the demand of high precision get its production cost to be high and its reliability to be low. In this paper, the 4th generation optical pick-up is designed and developed, with the hologram device which laser diode. photo diode, beam splitter. and grating lens are integrated in. This optical pick-up reduces the number of points of adjustment by 3, compared with the 3rd generation optical pick-up of which the number of points of adjustment is 6. This optical pickup also decreases by 4 the number of points of W bonding to have bad influence on environmental reliability, decreases by about 10 the number of parts, and establishes about 20% cost-down of material cost, compared with the 3rd generation optical pick-up.

Oblique astigmatism according to the rotation of the eye has to be removed for obtaining peripheral clear vision in ophthalmic lenses. For this reason, we calculated tangential and sagittal power using third-order approximation theory and then controlled conic constant for the difference of the two powers to converge to 0 regardless of the rotation angle of the eye. As a result, an aspherical ophthalmic lens without oblique astigmatism was designed. Also, we found optimal machining condition to the lens material using factorial design and finally fabricated the designed lens through ultra-precision machining with that condition.
A reflecting telescope consists of a concave primary mirror and a convex secondary mirror. The primary mirror is easy to measure, because it converges the beam from an interferometer, while the secondary mirror diverges the beam and so is not easy to measure, even though it is smaller than the primary mirror. In addition, the Korsch-type telescope uses the central area of the secondary mirror, so that the entire area of the secondary mirror needs to be measured, which the classical Hindle test cannot do. In this paper, we propose a double-stitching method that combines two separate area measurements: the annular area, measured using the Hindle stitching method, and the central area, measured using a spherical wave from the interferometer. We test the surface error of a convex asphere that is 202 mm in diameter, with 499 mm for its radius of curvature and -4.613 for its conic constant. The surface error is calculated to be 19.5±1.3 nm rms, which is only 0.7 nm rms different from the commercial stitching interferometer, ASI. Also, the two results show a similar 45° astigmatism aberration. Therefore, our proposed method is found to be valuable for testing the whole area of a convex asphere.
The Cassegrain telescope consists of a primary concave mirror and a secondary convex mirror. In the case of a secondary mirror, it is more difficult to test wavefront error than for a primary mirror, because it reflects the entire testing beam, as it is convex in shape. In this paper we tested the wavefront error of a complex aspheric convex secondary mirror by using the Simpson-Oland-Meckel Hindle test. To separate the systematic errors, such as fabrication error and alignment error of a meniscus lens, we adopted the QN absolute test (pixel-based absolute test using the quasi-Newton method) as well. Finally, we compared the measured result with that of an ASI (Aspheric Stitching Interferometer) made by the QED company, which resulted in an rms difference of only 2.5 nm, showing a similar shape of astigmatism aberration.
