In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of imagery thinking in the processes of generating analogy of seventh grade science-gifted students in terms of the information-processing of imagery. The analyses of the results revealed that science-gifted students' information-processing of imagery in the processes of generating analogy consisted of image generation, image operation, and image representation. The types of imagery used by science-gifted students were classified into perception imagery, memory imagery, and imagination imagery, and there were some differences in the patterns of information-processing of imagery. In the bases of these results, we suggested the information-processing model of imagery by the types of imagery used in generating analogy. The results of this study may provide useful implication to develop effective methods for a strategy of generating analogy emphasizing the interaction between analogy thinking and imagery thinking which promotes imagery thinking of science-gifted students.

In this study, we analyzed the analogies in the chemistry domain of 27 middle school science textbooks and 8 high school chemistry textbooks developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. A total of 284 analogies (science, 143; chemistry, 141) were identified from the textbooks, which means that 8.11 analogies (science, 5.3; chemistry, 17.6) per textbook and 0.68 analogy (science, 0.66; chemistry, 0.70) per 10 pages were used on average. Compared with previous curricula that the number of analogies gradually increased, the use of analogy was found to be somewhat decreased in the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. The number of analogies found in each textbook considerably varied depending on course, unit, and publishing company. One hundred ninety one different kinds of analogies were used, among which 38(19.9%) were used over twice. Further analyses of the types of analogies indicated that verbal and pictorial analogy, analogy with abstract target and concrete analog, and enriched analogy were frequently used. However, the term 'analogy' and the description about the limitation of the analogy were rarely mentioned. Artificial analogy, teacher-centered analogy, and analogy with low systematicity were also found to be frequently used. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

In this study, we developed analogical experimental activities to foster scientific creativity in inquiry learning and applied them to 7th grade science-gifted students. The influences of inquiry learning-based analogical experiments were investigated with respect to the experimental design processes. We classified the patterns of experimental design processes by creative thinking processes and analyzed performance levels by the elements of experimental design processes. The students' experimental design processes were categorized into three kinds of patterns such as reinitiated motion, backward-divergent motion and stationary motion. Those belonging to the reinitiated motion performed precise experimental design from new perspectives by identifying the mapping in depth and considering the elements of experimental design processes. In the case of the backward-divergent motion, they shifted their positions to new directions, but the concreteness of experimental design was insufficient due to the lack of mapping or considering the elements. In the type of stationary motion, maintaining their previous positions, they showed less performance of experimental design without considering the elements sufficiently. Educational implication of these findings are discussed.

This study investigated the effect of presenting modes of multiple analogies on middle school students' understanding of science concepts. A total of 122 7th-graders was randomly assigned to one of 4 groups. After reading one of 4 analogy-learning materials in different analogy presenting modes (the number of analogs, the number of mappings between analog and target, and the comparison of similarity between analogs). the students took a conception test. The results indicated that using analogs and mappings twice were not significant factors in recalling and applying science concepts. However, the comparison of similarity between analogs was found to be a significant factor in applying science concepts. Educational implications are discussed.
In this study, we investigated the effects of analogy-generating in small group in elementary science-gifted education upon the types and the mapping errors of student-generated analogies, and the perceptions of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=37) at two science-gifted classes in two elementary schools were selected and assigned to individualistic analogygenerating (IA, n=19) and pair analogy-generating (PA, n=18) groups. After the students of each group performed the experiment and were taught about 'saturated solution' concept in the first class, they administered the test on the self-generating analogies on the concept in the second class. The students in the PA group also administered the test on perceptions of analogy-generating in small group and some of them were interviewed deeply. The results revealed that the students in the PA group made more verbal/pictorial, structural/functional, enriched, and higher systematic analogies than those in the IA group. However, there were little difference between the two groups in the subcategories of artificiality (artificial and everyday) and abstraction (abstract and concrete). The students in the PA group fewer mapping errors than those in the IA group. Many students in PA group perceived the analogy-generating in small group positively upon various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, they also pointed a few disadvantages of the activity. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

This study investigated the mapping errors induced in learning the concept of reaction rate with analogies, and compared these mapping errors by the analogy presentation types. Tenth graders (N=418) at a high school were assigned to the four groups by the target concepts and the analogy presentation types. The target concepts were 'concentration and reaction rate' and 'temperature and reaction rate'. In presenting analogy, the verbal and the verbal/pictorial analogs were used. After the students learned one of the analogs, a mapping test was administered. From the analysis, eight types of mapping errors were identified: overmapping, artificial mapping, failure to map, rash mapping, mismapping, mapping of a superficial feature, retention of a base feature, and impossible mapping. According to the analogy presentation types and the features of the target concepts, there were some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
In this study, we examined the characteristics of analogies generated by science-gifted students depending on the consideration of attributes and relationships in the processes of generating analogies and investigated the applicability of analogy-generating activities in science-gifted education programs. The analyses of the results revealed that the analogy-generating processes of science-gifted students were categorized into three kinds of patterns depending on the consideration of attributes and relationships of the target concept and the source analog. There are also some differences in the types of analogies generated and selected to be good, and in the proper mapping numbers by the patterns depending on the consideration of attributes and relationships. Most science-gifted students used the analogy-generating activities to other target concept, and recognized them to be useful. However, they had difficulties in selecting source analogs at the processes of generating analogy. These obtained in this study will help to explore a potential use of the analogy-generating activities in an effective education program for fostering the creativity of science-gifted students.
In this study, we investigate the relative effectiveness of the two types of brand extensions (sequential extensions vs. direct extensions) in dissimilar extensions and examine the moderating role of two key variables - brand concept(functional brand vs. symbolic brand) and price of target extension product(low vs. high). The results from two experiments show that consumers evaluate the target extension product more favorably when brand is extended sequentially to dissimilar categories than when it is extended directly. However, the difference of target extension product evaluation between sequential extensions and direct extensions decrease when brand is symbolic and price of target extension product is high. Theoretical and managerial implications of the finding are discussed and inplications for future research are suggested.
