Analysis for Nonlinear Turbine Effect of Inclined OWC Wave Energy Converter (경사형 진동수주 파력발전장치의 비선형 터빈효과의 분석)

  • The oscillating-water-column wave energy converter represents the complex physical characteristics associated with the water column, turbines, generator, and power converter. This study focuses on the derivation of the physical relationship between the water column and turbine based on the 1/ 4 scale model test. The aerodynamic characteristics of the OWC ducted turbine were simulated using an orifice. The turbine effect, a key element in the OWC-chamber performance evaluation, can be represented by the flow rate and pressure drop through the orifice. The turbine effect of OWC-WEC was confirmed to have a non-linear relationship from the measured flow rate and pressure drop in the model test.

Optimal Operation of industrial Cogeneration Plant with Back-Pressure and Extraction-Condensing Turbine/Generators (背壓과 抽氣復水터빈을 採用한 産業用 熱倂合 發電플랜트의 最適運用)

  • This paper presents a novel algorithm for determining the optimal operation of a cogeneration plant with back-pressure and extraction-condensing turbine/generators. The proposed algorithm determines the optimum load of boilers and turbine/generators, using only one parameter, the steam mass flow rate, which can be obtained directly from on-line measurement during plant operation. The proposed algorithm consists of the non -linear operating cost function, and its correlated constraints. Furthermore, it has been successfully applied to an actual industrial cogeneration plant, with satisfactory results. Comparison of these results with actual operating data has revealed that using the proposed algorithm results in at least 1.2~4.5[%] operating cost saving, depending on the process steam load. Furthermore the proposed algorithm can be easily installed in a process control computer because the required input data can be easily obtained from information available on-line.n-line.

  • Nacelle anemometers are mounted on wind-turbine nacelles behind blade roots to measure the free-stream wind speed projected onto the wind turbine for control purposes. However, nacelle anemometers measure the transformed wind speed that is due to the wake effect caused by the blades' rotation and the nacelle geometry, etc. In this paper, we derive the Nacelle Transfer Function (NTF) to calibrate the nacelle wind speed to the free-stream wind speed, as required to carry out the performance test of wind turbines according to the IEC 61400-12-2 Wind-Turbine Standard. For the reference free-stream wind data, we use the Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) measurement at the Shinan wind power plant located on the Bigeumdo Island shoreline. To improve the simple linear regression NTF, we derive the multiple nonlinear regression NTF. The standard error of the wind speed was found to have decreased by a factor of 9.4, whereas the mean of the power-output residual distribution decreased by 6.5 when the 2-parameter NTF was used instead of the 1-parameter NTF.

  • Optimal aerodynamic design for the pitch-controlled horizontal axis wind turbine and its aerodynamic performance for various pitch angles are performed numerically by using the blade element momentum theory. The numerical calculation includes effects such as Prandtl‘s tip loss, airfoil distribution, and wake rotation. Six different airfoils are distributed along the blade span, and the special airfoil i.e. airfoil of 40% thickness ratio is adopted at the hub side to have structural integrity. The nonlinear chord obtained from the optimal design procedure is linearized to decrease the weight and to increase the productivity with very little change of the aerodynamic performance. From the comparisons of the power, thrust, and torque coefficients with corresponding values of different pitch angles, the aerodynamic performance shows delicate changes for just $3^{\circ}$ increase or decrease of the pitch angle. For precisive pitch control, it requires the pitch control algorithm and its drive mechanism below $3^{\circ}$ increment of pitch angle. The maximum torque is generated when the speed ratio is smaller than the designed one.

  • In this work, an insulated coupling test machine for a 5-MW-class wind turbine was designed and developed, along with the public performance testing of a 3-MW-class wind turbine. The results of the device design, development requirements, functional considerations, structural vibration analysis, and the evaluation of the insulated coupling test machine are presented in this study. For the coupling models, thick fiberglass composite pipe insulation, fabricated by filament winding, was considered. Results of three-dimensional finite element analysis conducted using both solid element and shell element modeling were analyzed and compared, considering the effect of thickness. In addition, results from the nonlinear finite element analysis of multiple leaf springs of the laminated disk pack structure were verified and compared with experimental data.

Development of Helmholtz Solver for Thermo-Acoustic Instability within Combustion Devices (연소시스템의 열음향 불안정 예측을 위한 Helmholtz Solver 개발)

  • In order to effectively predict thermo-acoustic instability within real combustors of rocket engines and gas turbines, in the present study, the Helmholtz equation in conjunction with the time lag hypothesis is discretized by the finite element method on three-dimensional hybrid unstructured mesh. Numerical nonlinearity caused by the combustion response term is linearized by an iterative method, and the large-scale eigenvalue problem is solved by the Arnoldi method available in the ARPACK. As a consequence, the final solution of complex valued eigenfrequency and acoustic pressure field can be interpreted as resonant frequency, growth rate, and modal shape for acoustic modes of interest. The predictive capabilities of the present method have been validated against two academic problems with complex impedance boundary and premixed flame, as well as an ambient acoustic test for liquid rocket combustion chamber with/without baffle.
