A study for the structural strength evaluation on the doubler plate subjected to the biaxial in-plane compression has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on their results. A1so, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of flat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested in order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent flat plate formula and the developed buckling strength formulas by author et a1. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

PURPOSES : This study is primarily focused on evaluating the effects of the non-linear stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete on structural response characteristics as is applicable to concrete pavement. METHODS : A 3D FE model was developed by incorporating the actual stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete obtained via flexural strength testing as a material property model to evaluate the effects of the non-linear stress-strain behavior to failure on the maximum stresses in the concrete slab and potential performance prediction results. In addition, a typical linear elastic model was employed to analyze the structural responses for comparison purposes. The analytical results from the FE model incorporating the actual stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete were compared to the corresponding results from the linear elastic FE model. RESULTS : The results indicate that the linear elastic model tends to yield higher predicted maximum stresses in the concrete as compared to those obtained via the actual stress-strain model. Consequently, these higher predicted stresses lead to a difference in potential performance of the concrete pavement containing RAP. CONCLUSIONS : Analysis of the concrete pavement containing RAP demonstrated that an appropriate analytical model using the actual stress-strain characteristics should be employed to calculate the structural responses of RAP concrete pavement instead of simply assuming the concrete to be a linear elastic material.

The dynamic characteristics of natural rubber bearings, which are used as isolator, are dependent on the main rubber's dynamic behaviors and nonlinear properties. Rubber materials tend to undergo an aging process under the influence of mechanical or environmental factors, so they inevitably end up facing damage. A main cause of aging like this is known to be oxidization, which occurs through the heat of reaction at high temperatures. Accordingly, in this study an accelerated thermal aging test was carried out in order to compare the characteristic values of the bearings before and after thermal aging occurs. As a result of this experiment, it was found that a thermal aging phenomenon could have some effects on shear stiffness, energy absorption, and equivalent damping coefficients of the bearings. Furthermore, a deterioration in the dynamic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging was applied to an actual bridge and then the effects of such thermal aging on the seismic performance of the bridge were also compared and analyzed based on numerical analysis. As a result of this analysis, it was found that the changes in the basic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging bring only a minor effect on the seismic performance of bridges.

This paper presented analysis methods for adapting E-glass fiber/epoxy composite (GFRP) materials to an automotive leaf spring. It focused on the static behaviors of the leaf spring due to the material composition and its fiber orientation. The material properties of the GFRP composite were directly measured based on the ASTM standard test. A reverse implementation was performed to obtain the complete set of in-situ fiber and matrix properties from the ply test results. Next, the spring rates of the composite leaf spring were examined according to the variation of material parameters such as the fiber angles and resin contents of the composite material. Finally, progressive failure analysis was conducted to identify the initial failure load by means of an elastic stress analysis and specific damage criteria. As a result, it was found that damage first occurred along the edge of the leaf spring owing to the shear stresses.

The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results from the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness reduced by large axial forces. The dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. Especially, when the eccentrically moving load is applied to a cable-stayed bridge, the torsional vibration and vertical vibration are coupled and moreover the variation of cable tensions shows important dynamic characteristics. This dissertation presents a theoretical study and a finite element procedure for analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under a eccentrically moving load. Attention is focused on the dynamic behaviours such as dynamic increments of cable tensions and nodal displacements, with the variety of velocities and eccentricities of moving load. It is found that a moving load with eccentricity can have significant effects upon the responses; the torsion of bridge deck and the increments of cable tensions, according to the present results in this study.
Damage induced by low-velocity impact on the curved composite laminates was experimentally evaluated for CFRP cylindrical shells with the radius of curvatures of 50, 150, 300, and 500 mm. The result was then compared with that of flat laminates and with the results by nonlinear finite-element analysis. The radius of curvatures and the effective shell stiffness appeared to considerably affect the dynamic impact response of curved shells. Under the same impact energy level, the maximum contact force increased with the decreasing radius of curvatures, with reaching 1.5 times that for plates at the radius of curvature of 50 mm. Since the maximum contact farce is directly related to the impact damage, curved laminates can be more susceptible to delamination and less resistant to the low-velocity impact damage. Delamination was distributed rather evenly at each interface along the thickness direction of curved laminates on the contrary to the case of flat laminates, where delamination is typically concentrated at the interfaces away from the impact point. This implies that the effect of curvatures has to be considered for the design of a curved composite laminate.

Recently, a concern to verify the displacement capacity of shear wall has been arised to produce suitable data for the performance based design. In this paper, a process is presented to evaluate the displacement capacity of shear wall. The displacement of shear wall is expressed as the superposition of shear and flexural deformation. Variable crack angle truss model with a modification and sectional analysis method are used in calculating shear and flexural displacement, respectively. In addition, the effect of axial force and the contribution of vertical and horizontal reinforcements in wall are considered in the analysis. The accuracy of proposed method is evaluated by the comparison calculation results with previous test results. From the comparison, it was shown that the hysteretic behavior of shear wall could be well predicted by using the process. In the case with flange wall, however, the method overestimates the contribution of flange wall for strength and stiffness and underestimates for displacement capacity.
A series of model tests were performed to investigate the load transfer by soil arching in geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported(GRPS) embankment systems. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted in the model container and geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by rubber form. The loads acting on pile caps and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. At the given interval ratio of pile caps, the efficiency in GRPS embankment systems increased with increasing the height of embankment fills, then gradually converged at constant value. Also, at the given height of embankment fills, the efficiency decreased with increasing the pile spacing. The embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching increased when the geosynthetics installed with piles. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics have a good effect to restraint the movement of surrounding soft grounds. The load transfer in GRPS embankment systems was affected by the interval ratio, height of fills, properties of grounds and tensile stiffness and so on.
This paper describes a simplified numerical procedure for analyzing the response of bridge pier foundations due to riverbed scouring. A computationally efficient algorithm to analyze the behavior of a pile group is proposed by considering soil-pile, pile-cap, and pile-fluid interactions. The complex phenomenon of the pile-soil interaction is modeled by discrete nonlinear soil springs (p-y, t-z and q-z curves). The pile-cap interaction is considered by geometric configuration of the piles in a group and connectivity conditions between piles and the cap. The pile-fluid interaction is incorporated into the procedure by reducing the stiffness of the soil-pile reactions as a result of nonlinearity and degradation of the soil stiffness with river bridge scouring. Through the numerical study, it is shown that the maximum bending moment increases with increasing scour depth. Thus it is desirable to check the stability elf pile groups based on soil-pile and pile-cap interactions by considering scouring depth in the riverbed.
