  • In this paper, since we currently using surveillance system of analog type bring about waste of resource and efficiency deterioration problems, we describe new solution that design and implementation to the digital surveillance system of new type applying compression techniques and encoding techniques of image data using MPEG-2 international standard. Also, we proposed fast motion estimation algorithm requires much less than the convectional digital surveillance camera system. In this paper a fast motion estimation algorithm is proposed the MPEG-2 video encoding. This algorithm is based on a hybrid use of the block matching technique and gradient technique. Also, we describe a method of moving object extraction directly using MPEG-2 video data. Since proposed method is very simple and requires much less computational power than the conventional object detection methods. In this paper we don't use specific H/W and this system is possible only software encoding, decoding and transmission real-time for image data.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm for video encoding. Conventional fast motion estimation algorithms have a serious problem of low prediction quality in some frames. However, full search based fast algorithms have low computational reduction ratio. In the paper, we propose an algorithm that significantly reduces unnecessary computations, while keeping prediction quality almost similar to that of the full search. The proposed algorithm uses distribution probability of motion vectors and adaptive search patterns and block matching criteria. By taking different search patterns and error criteria of block matching according to distribution probability of motion vectors, we can reduces only unnecessary computations efficiently. Our algorithm takes only 20~30% in computational amount and has decreased prediction quality about 0~0.02dB compared with the fast full search of the H.264 reference software. Our algorithm will be useful to real-time video coding applications using MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC standards.

  • In 3D video transmission, a depth map being used for depth image based rendering (DIBR) is generally compressed by reducing resolution for coding efficiency. Errors in resolution reduction are recovered by an appropriate up-sampling method after decoding. However, most previous works only focus on up-sampling techniques to reduce errors. In this paper, we propose a novel down-sampling technique of depth map that applies different down-sampling rates on moving objects and background in order to enhance human perceptual quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides both higher visual quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Also, our method is compatible with other up-sampling techniques.

  • MPEG and VCEG have constituted a collaboration team called JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) and have been developing the HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) standard. The next generation video coding standard HEVC shows higher compression rate compared with the H.264/AVC standard, but the encoder computational complexity of the HEVC encoder is significantly high. In order to reduce this computational complexity in the HEVC encoder, a fast prediction unit decision is proposed. The proposed fast prediction unit decision method reduces the encoder complexity by skipping the remaining prediction units if the current prediction unit does not have any non-zero quantized transform coefficient. The proposed method reduces the encoder computational complexity by 50.3% comparing with HM6.0 but it maintains the same level of coding efficiency.

  • In transmitting compressed video bit-stream over Internet, packet loss causes error propagation in both spatial and temporal domain, which in turn leads to severe degradation in image quality. In this paper, a new approach for the recovery of lost or erroneous Motion Vector(MV)s by classifying the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity is proposed. MVs of neighboring blocks are classified according to the direction of MVs and a representative value for each class is determined to obtain the candidate MV set. By computing the distortion of the candidates, a MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in many cases than existing methods.

  • In transmitting a compressed video bit-stream over Internet, a packet loss causes an error propagation in both spatial and temporal domain, which in turn leads to a severe degradation in image quality. In this paper, a new error concealment algorithm is proposed to repair damaged portions of the video frames in the receiver. Conventional BMA(Boundary Matching Algorithm) assumes that the pixels on the boundary of the missing block and its neighboring blocks are very similar, but has no consideration of edges t)r discontinuity across the boundary. In our approach, the edges are detected across the boundary of the lost or erroneous block. Once the edges are detected and the orientation of each edge is found, only the pixel difference along the expected edges across the boundary is measured instead of calculating differences between all adjacent pixels on the boundary. Therefore, the proposed approach needs very few computations and the experiment shows an improvement of the performance over the conventional BMA in terms of both subjective and objective quality of video sequences.

  • Tremendous computation of full search or lossless motion estimation algorithms for video coding has led development of many fast motion estimation algorithms. We still need proper control of computation and prediction quality. In the paper, we suggest an algorithm that reduces computation effectively and controls computational amount and prediction quality, while keeping prediction quality as almost the same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm uses multiple thresholds for partial block sum and times of counting unchanged minimum position for each step. It also calculates the partial block matching error, removes impossible candidates early, implements fast motion estimation by comparing times of keeping the position of minimum error for each step, and controls prediction quality and computation easily by adjusting the thresholds. The proposed algorithm can be combined with conventional fast motion estimation algorithms as well as by itself, further reduce computation while keeping the prediction quality as almost same as the algorithms, and prove it in the experimental results.

  • Since motion estimation and motion compensation methods remove the redundant data to employ the temporal redundancy in images, it plays an important role in digital video compression. Because of its high computational complexity, however, it is difficult to apply to high-resolution applications in real time environments. If we have information about the motion of an image block before the motion estimation, the location of a better starting point for the search of an exact motion vector can be determined to expedite the searching process. In this paper, we present an adaptive motion estimation approach bated on temporal correlations of consecutive image frames that defines the search pattern and determines the location of the initial search point adaptively. Through experiments, compared with DS(Diamond Search) algorithm, the proposed algorithm is about 0.1∼0.5(dB) better than DS in terms of PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and improves as high as 50% compared with DS in terms of average number of search point per motion vector estimation.

  • The latest standard H.264 coding methods show better efficiency compared to the former coding standards from the rate distortion point of view, but also lead to high complexity. In this paper, we propose an adaptive and fast inter/intra prediction algorithm for H.264 video coding. In the inter prediction algorithm, an effective and simple mode selection method is proposed, which can adaptively adjust to motion estimation to reduce complexity. And proposed intra prediction algorithm reduces its complexity by using calculated Minimum Rate-Distortion costs in the prediction of Intra $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ modes. From experiment using JM8.4, our algorithm can reduce about $60.9\%$ of computation time as compared to JM, with only negligible PSNR and bitrate degradation.

  • Most video codecs including the international standards use the block-based hybrid structure for efficient compression. But for low bit-rate applications such as video transmission through wireless channels, the blocking artifacts degrade image qualify seriously. In this paper, we propose an adaptive de-blocking algorithm using characteristics of the block boundaries. Blocking artifacts contain the high frequency components near the block boundaries, therefore the lowpass filtering can remove them. However, simple lowpass filtering results into blurring by removing important information such as edges. To overcome this problem, we determine the modes depending upon the characteristics of pixels adjacent to block boundary then proper filter is applied to each area. Simulation results show that proposed method improves de-blocking performance compared to that of MPEG-4.
