  • This paper describes the algorithm of computing thermal contact conductance between unmatched grid interfaces for finite element thermal analysis. Because grid interfaces should be coincident with adjacent meshes for finite element method, large amount of man hours and huge computations are required to match interfaces between many numbers of complex subdomains. A novel method that distributes feasibly the conductances to interface nodes is proposed. The aims of the method are described, and details of the nodal conductance distribution algorithm with less dependency on meshes are represented. The algorithm can be applied both the flat and curved interfaces in 3 dimensional space, and proposed method can combined with many finite element application including thermal analysis.

  • In this research, we propose a field mismatch compensation method for interlaced scan image and a image restoration technique for removing motion blur. In order to compensate field mismatch, the edge classification-based linear interpolation technique and the method using the object-based motion compensation are described. We also propose an edge estimation method and an motion-based image segmentation algorithm. For removing motion blur, we adopt an adaptive iterative image restoration method using the motion-based segmentation result to improve the quality of restored image.

  • Additive noise and channel distortion strongly degrade the performance of speaker verification systems, as it introduces distortion of the features of speech. This distortion causes a mismatch between the training and recognition conditions such that acoustic models trained with clean speech do not model noisy and channel distorted speech accurately. This paper presents a phase-related feature extraction method in order to improve the robustness of the speaker verification systems. The instantaneous frequency is computed from the phase of speech signals and features from the histogram of the instantaneous frequency are obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed technique offers significant improvements over the standard techniques in both clean and adverse testing environments.

  • A tidal river is a river affected by tides causing the water level to rise and fall. In the river, the velocity induced by tides at a dry season can be a more dominant factor than that at a flood season in designing hydraulic structures. In this study, flow velocities and water levels were observed in the downstream of Han River at the dry season, and they are used for verification of numerically predicted results. The behaviors of flow were also analyzed by using UNET, a commercial model managing unsteady flows. To estimate the roughness coefficients of the tidal river reach near the Shingok submerged weir, a statistical method is employed. In the method, the discrepancy ratio between the measured and calculated water levels was implemented.

  • This study aims at the augmentation of reliability of the long-term rainfall runoff model. To do so agricultural water uses are evaluated by analyzing the effects of small scale irrigational hydraulic structures on long term runoff processes and thereby rainfall-runoff model is modified considering them. As a result the simulation results of the sub-basins having more agricultural reservoirs than the others are disagreed with the observations. The 2nd quarter simulation results show similar trend to it. Especially the farming seasonal results of the drought year as the year of 2008 have many negative discharge values due to the lack of agricultural water uses. This result come from the water uses input data corresponding to not real water uses but water demands. In this study the formulas are derived to estimate the discharges and return ratios and the long term rainfall-runoff model is reformulated based on these. It is confirmed that the errors of the simulation results could be reduced by considering the effects of small scale irrigational hydraulic structures and the reliability of the simulation results improved greatly.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the alignment of ridge-like surface structures evolving on silicon-germanium thin films under localized modulation of surface diffusivity. A situation is considered in which the surface diffusion of film material is selectively promoted such that its morphology is perturbed to periodic patterns. To simulate the growth behavior, a governing equation is formulated taking the surface chemical potential into account, and its solution is numerically sought using a finite-difference method. Results show that an initially planar surface coalesces upon the diffusivity modulation, and the surface structures can be aligned by changing the frequency of modulation condition. This research suggests a bottom-up fabrication technique that can manage the regularity of surface structures for thin film devices.

  • It is implicated in the current road design manual that design speed is well representing the operating speed of drivers. On the contrary, the disparity between the design speed and operating speed means that current road design cannot guarantee the safety and comfort of driving. In this context, operating speed was observed at the two lane rural roadways to find out the relation of operating speed and design speed. In addition to this, the friction factor from supply and demand which was derived from the operating speed was compared in terms of the dynamics in driving safety factor. It was concluded that the actual speed was consistently exceeding the design speed at the horizontal curves having the radius less than or equal to 200 m. Similarly, the demanded side friction was also consistently exceeding the supplied side friction at the horizontal curves having the radius less than or equal to 200 m and the amount of difference was also inversely proportional to the radius of the horizontal curves.

  • The AERMOD model was the most used, accounting for 89.0%, based on the analysis of the environmental impact assessment reports published in the Environmental Impact Assessment Information Support System (EIASS) between 2021 and 2022. The mismatch of versions between AERMET and AERMOD was found to be 25.3%. There was the operational time discrepancy of 50.6% from industrial complexes, urban development projects between used in the model and applied in estimating pollutant emissions. The results of applying various versions of the AERMET and AERMOD models to both area sources and point sources in both simple and complex terrain in the Gunsan area showed similar values after AERMOD version 12 (15181). Emissions are assessed as 24-hour operation, and the predicted concentration in both simple and complex terrain when using the variable emission coefficient option that applies an 8-hour daytime operation in the model is lowered by 37.42% ~ 74.27% for area sources and by 32.06% ~ 54.45% for point sources. Therefore, to prevent the error in using the variable emission coefficient, it is required to clearly present the emission calculation process and provide a detailed explanation of the composition of modeling input data in the environmental impact assessment reports. Also, thorough reviews by special institutions are essential.

  • Full scale HDR containment experiment series pointed out that the previous containment analysis models have a number of shortcomings. One of them is on the calculational model of short term (0~2sec) pressure difference. The pressure differences between subcompartments are dependent on the flow rate, fluid density, head loss coefficient, and flow area ratio. It, however, is not known that any of them is largely attributed to the disagreement of pressure difference between the measured and the calculated values. In this study, the head loss coefficients are expressed with another form to improve the analytic model. The pressure and the pressure difference are evaluated by using COMPARE code with new correlation, and the results show better agreements with experimental values for V.42 test, but overestimate the measured values for V, 43 and underestimate for V.44.
