  • Abstract: Surface topography has a significant influence on seismic wave propagation in a reflection seismic exploration. Effects of surface topography on two-dimensional elastic wave propagation are investigated through modeling using a weighted-averaging (WA) finite-element method (FEM), which is computationally more efficient than conventional FEM. Effects of air layer on wave propagation are also investigated using flat surface models with and without air. To validate our scheme in modeling including topography, we compare WA FEM results for irregular topographic models against those derived from conventional FEM using one set of rectangular elements. For the irregular surface topography models, elastic wave propagation is simulated to show that breaks in slope act as a new source for diffracted waves, and that Rayleigh waves are more seriously distorted by surface topography than P-waves.

  • To accurately estimate the rate of sediment transport in shallow water bodies, it is necessary to investigate the irregular waves transformation characteristics and nearshore currents produced by random sea waves. Most of studies on numerical models for nearshore currents are based on the theory of monocromatic waves and thus, very few nearshore models take into account the effect of irregularities in the hight, period and directional spreading of incident waves. The numerical simulation model for nearshore currents used in this paper considers the effect of irregularities of incident waves, based on Individual Wave Analysis. The computational results are compared and shown in a reasionable agreement with the experimental data.

  • This paper deals with the adaptive state estimation which is designed specially for a tracking system containing unknown and/or radomly varying hybride noises to provide an accurate estimate of the system state. The range of discrete vectyor v in finite numbers(N) for this adaptive estimator span the entire possible range of impulse noise levels such as the binomial, the edge, the Tchebyscheff, the binomal-edge and the Tchbyscheff-edge distribution. A feed forward path consisting of zero detector and data selector is incoporated with the conventional adaptive state estimator so as to provide accurate estimations. Despite the large and randomly varying hybrid noises, results of computer simulations for the various discrete vector levels show that this adptive state estimator is turned out to be a good system with relatively small implse errors.

  • The classical spectral analysis of random vibration is not applicable to the random vibration of nonlinear structures or the dynamic response of active mechanical systems whose governing equations contain random parametric and inhomogeneous excitations. If the random load is simulated, dynamic responses can be obtained with the application of numerical integration schemes to the governing equations of above problems. Thus, in this paper, efficient and practical methods of simulating nonstationary random seismic ground accelerations are presented by using the fast Fourier transform technique. Typical applications of the simulated ground accelerations are the simulations of the dynamic response of rotor-bearing systems under earthquake excitations. The study of accuracy is presented to determine the applicability and practicality of methods of simulation.

  • Investigation is performed on the stability of general form of dynamic system under colored noise random disturbance whose damping and stiffness are varying in irregular manner along time, which is a preliminary result in the course of research on the characteristic and the control of the stochastic system. Adopted physical model is airfoil under random atmospheric disturbance, which becomes a "time-varying system" whose the governing equation is derived via F-P-K approach in stochastic sense. Control performance and effect of 'Heo-stochastic controller for colored noise' is studied. Also stochastic feature of flutter boundary is discussed as well.

  • This study presents the nonlinear responses of a hinged-clamped beam under broadband random excitation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system or nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the joint moments of response coordinates. Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure schemes are used to close the infinite coupled moment equations. The closed equations are then solved for response statistics in terms of system and excitation parameters. The case of two mode interaction is considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. Monte Carlo simulation is used for numerical verification.

  • In this paper we applied a ray tracing method to estimate the scattering characteristics from large scale random rough surfaces. For the electromagnetic field evaluation, we have used the diffracted coefficient of the knife edge diffraction for the diffracted rays and Fresnel's reflection coefficients in connection with reflected rays. In addition, we examine to search for the traced rays using the imaging method which can be obtained all rays to arrived at receivers accurately and the diffracted field from rough surfaces is considered. Numerical examples have been carried out for the scattering characteristics of an ocean wave-like rough surface and delay spread characteristics of a building-like surface. In the present work we have demonstrated that the ray tracing method is effective to numerical analysis of a rough surface scattering.

  • The maneuvering equations of motion are derived to express the motion of a ship. The wave forces in the time domain analysis are generated from the frequency transfer function calculated by 3-D source distribution method. The linear wave forces whose periods are equal to those of incident waves and the nonlinear wave forces that make long period drift forces are computed for the simulation. The consideration of irregular waves and nonlinear wave force effects on the slew motion are carried on the analyzing the motion of ship in the regular and irregular waves.

  • A null lens system of autostigmatic type, consisting of two mirrors, is designed for testing a large aspherical mirror. The system is theoretically analyzed to determine the limitation of measurement accuracy according to the manufacturing and alignment errors. We confirmed that irregularity of the null lens surface is the principal factor among tolerances in limiting measurement accuracy. Consequently, we can predict that measurement accuracy will be from 5λ/100 to 4λ/1000 according to the amount of this irregularity. That is, we can present the limitation of possible measurement accuracy with actual alignment and manufacturing errors.
