  • The distribution on 88 taxa of wild orchids in the Korean Peninsula was investigated by the examinations of specimens and the distribution maps were presented. The species numbers distributed at each eight floral regions in the Korean Peninsula are as the followings; Gapsan Province 27 taxa, Gwanbuk 21, Gwanseo 13, Middle 37, South 39, Southern-coast 33, Jeju 64 and Ulleung 19. Most species (72.7%) of Korean wild orchids are found in the Jeju Island. Eighteen taxa of them are restricted to the island in the Korean Peninsula. Among Korean species, 30 taxa grow at evergreen broad-leaved forests, and 16 are northern elements distributed at high mountains or northern part. In terms of distribution, the Korean wild orchid species are classified into IUCN Red List Categories by a modified criterion for Korean plants. No orchid species included EX or EW categories is found in the Korean Peninsula. Ten species are designated to be in CR category; Cymbidium kanran, C. lancifolium, C. ensifolium, Cypripedium japonicum, Cyrtosia septentrionalis, Dendrobium moniliforme, Habenaria chejuensis, H. radiata, Neofinetia falcata and Sedirea japonica, of which C. ensifolium and H. chejuensis are regarded as CR species for the first time. On the other hand, 22 taxa are classified into EN category, and the following nine taxa are newly proposed to be EN species; Gastrochilus japonicum, G. fuscopunctatus, Gastrodia verrucosa, Habenaria flagellifera, Herminium lanceum var. longicrure, Chamaegastrodia sikokiana, Lecanorchis kiusiana, Neottia hypocastanoptica and Tipularia japonica.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the vascular plants of the protected area for forest genetic resource conservation in the National Yonghyeon natural recreation forest. The vascular plants collected 7 times (from February to September 2014) were consist of total 460 taxa; 95 families, 280 genera, 398 species, 3 subspecies, 50 varieties and 9 forms respectively. The 6 taxa of Korean endemic plants and 8 taxa of Korean rare plants were investigated. The floristic regional indicator plants found in this area were 43 taxa comprising 7 taxa of grade IV, 7 taxa of grade III, 12 taxa of grade II, 17 taxa of grade I. The naturalized plants were 39 taxa, therefore naturalized ratio was 8.5%. 460 taxa listed consist of 189 taxa (41.1%) of edible plants, 155 taxa (33.7%)of medicinal plants, 177 taxa (38.5%) of pasture plants, 52 taxa (11.3%) of ornamental plants, 17 taxa (3.7%)of timber plants, 12 taxa (2.6%) of fiber plants and 3 taxa (0.7%) of industrial plants. The vegetation status of investigated area was comparatively well conserved, but human-induced damage is increasingly greater. Therefore, a long-term monitoring of vascular plants and vegetation movement must become accomplished.

  • Ten taxa of green algae collected at 8 stations of reservoirs and one of aerial habitat were reported newly in Korea. They belong to 7 genera, 2 species, 6 varieties and 2 forms and include one taxon of Scenedesmus, Actinotaenium, Euastrum, Hyalotheca, Staurastrum and Teilingia respectively, 4 taxa of Cosmarium. The Korean green algae, including these newly reported ones, totals to 1,131 taxa, and classified as 1 class, 10 orders, 34 families, 140 genera, 728 species, 318 varieties and 85 forms. Actinotaenium cucurbita var. cucurbita f. rotundatum cultured in this study was appeared to be variable in the size of isthmus. In the Korean taxa of Cosmarium lapponicum var. granulatum, C. portianum var. orthostichum and Euastrum denticulatum var. rectangulare, cell sizes were shown smaller than previously reported ones. Five taxa including Cosmarium lapponicum var. granulatum were occurred in the eutrophic states, and Cosmarium decedens, previously reported as present in the freshwater area, was collected at the aerial habitat in this study.

  • This study presents the flora of nonvascular plants (bryophytes) and vascular plants within the Wangpicheon Ecosystem and Landscape Conservation Area in Korea. The time of the survey was divided into four seasons. The fieldwork was conducted for a total of 18 days from November of 2016 to October of 2017. The land plants in the Wangpicheon conservation area were identified as 758 taxa with 164 families, 455 genera, 698 species, 10 subspecies, 47 varieties and 3 forms. Among them, bryophytes amounted to 122 taxa and vascular plants numbered 636 taxa. Native plant amounted to 693 taxa. In total, there are 113 floristic target species in Korea, including one level V taxon, in this case Swertia wilfordii; six level IV taxa; 31 level III taxa; 38 level II taxa; and 37 level I taxa. There are nine endemic plants, including Sillaphyton (=Peucedanum) podagraria, which is the endemic genus; two rare plants; fifteen northern plants; and one southern plant as target plants adaptable to climate change. Also, there are forty-six naturalized plants and five ecosystem-disturbance organisms. The results of this study suggest several species that should be preserved and can serve as basic information with which to establish conservation and management plans for the Wangpicheon conservation area.
