  • The convergence-confinement method is an attempt to evaluate tunnel stability conditions by means of a mathematical model and a ground response curve. In this study, the convergence-confinement method by numerical model was examined. This method don't need the basic assumptions for a mathematical model. Also This is applicable to general tunnel. According to the results of this study, the change of shotcrete stiffness and the load-distribution ratio used for 2-Dimension numerical analysis are not signficant factors. The ground response curve and the support reaction curve are mutually dependent. Especially the support reaction curve depends upon the ground response curve. The mechanism of tunnel must be analyzed by the interaction between support and ground. Consequently the stability of tunnel must be qualitatively investigated by a ground response curve and quantitatively adjudged by a numerical analysis for the reasonable design of tunnel.

  • Since traffic is aggregated to a MPP that acts as an Internet gateway, if traffic load is not balanced among the MPPs in a WMN, the overall performance of a WMN becomes poor even though the total traffic load is far below the capacity of the WMN. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a stochastic load balancing scheme where each MP (Mesh Point) probabilistically selects its serving MPP according to the congestion levels of MPPs. Through extensive simulations using ns-2, we have verified that our scheme can stabilize a WMN fast when congestion occurs and reduce packet loss rate by distributing traffic load of a congested MPP to multiple MPPs in the inverse proportional to their congestion levels. Compared to queue-based load balancing scheme, our method can decrease network stabilization time by 34 seconds, and reduce packet loss rate by 7.6%. Since the proposed scheme can reduce network stabilization time by efficiently using network resource, it is expected to contribute to the reliable operation of a WMN.

  • In this study, the design method of filament wound composite pressure tanks was established by using finite element analyses. Pressure tanks were designed with and without a load sharing metallic liner. A GUI(graphic user interface) program was developed to increase the efficiency of analyses. The replacement ratio was defined in order to replace a metal pressure tank with a composite one. Finally, the best design model that is satisfied with design requirements was suggested.

  • Traditionally, Mobile Teletraffic model consists of two sub-models, i.e. the network traffic model and the traffic source model. In this paper, we present the traffic source model by developing MobCall(Mobile Call Simulator) which analyses various mobile wireless environments based on regional characteristics that the base stations are located. User mobility is presented by regional average vehicle speeds and the transportation share rate. Moreover, the user mobility on subway, which is increasing in urban area, is considered in MobCall. Using MobCall, the accumulated number of calls in residential and commercial regions, the handoff rate with respect to traffic sources of Seoul, the handoff rate on highway, and the handoff rate according to the call duration are presented. MobCall enables the simulation of dynamic handoff buffering and functional entity control of one base station according to the changes in user's calling pattern at the design phase.

  • Considering the high density developments along the major traffic corridors in Seoul, transit-oriented street designs will be a very effective to control traffic congestion along the corridors. For testing the effectiveness, we selected. for our case study, Kangnam Street, which is one of the most highly developed corridors in Seoul The traffic study on Kangnam street in 2000 shows that the daily average bus speed is 11.73km/h, which is 5km/h lower than the auto speed. The Central Bus Lane system was applied on the Kangnam street to test impact on bus speed as well as auto speed. Simulation results show that with Central Bus Lane have been improved the travel speeds of bus as well as auto on Kangnam street from 14.4km/hr to 35.0km/hr and from 25.1km/hr to 26.1km/hr, respectively. The bus market share increases about 6-8 percentages. Especially, 13.4% of bus users are increased for long-distance trips.

  • In this study, the first experience of the whole research process of a novice scientist (student A) who participated in the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) was analyzed. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis with the cultural historical activity theory being used as a theoretical lens. At the beginning of novice's research, the mentor guided him in setting a research goal and provided mediating artifacts. Student A formed a research team based on the vertical relationship without a shared mental model. Two major contradictions occurred and they were the sources of changes of student A's activity system. The first contradiction was between the mentor's educational philosophy and the mentee's educational needs, which was resolved in a way that student A asked and used the mentor's network to obtain his needs about task-specific details. The second contradiction arose because the team members wanted horizontal relationship while student A wanted to stick to the vertical relationship. After student A accepted the opinions of the team members, they cooperatively changed the division of labor in the activity system. Student A decided to become a scientist and not a physics teacher, even if his major is physics education after finishing his URP research process. His URP experience also created and expanded his network in the academic field, and his negative attitude toward collaboration changed positively. Through the analysis of the structure and changes in the activity system of URP research, implications for instructional method and support system of the apprenticeship can be obtained.

  • The detention reservoir is a hydraulic structure that constructs a levee on the inland of river and sets up side weir in a section of the levee, and this facility stores a part of the flood volume in case of a flood event over a certain scale. In order to optimize the operation of detention reservoir, it is necessary to review the linkage with existing facilities in the river. In this study, the effect of water level reduction and the flow distribution was analyzed according to the location of the side weir in the detention reservoir considering the run-of-the-river gate. Two radial gates were installed in the experimental channel, and the water level in channel and the overflow of weir were measured by moving the location of the side weir upstream from the gate. As a results of experiment, it was confirmed that the water level reduction is more remarkable as the location of the side weir was closer to the gate, and the effect of flow distribution is not greatly changed. When two or more side weirs were operated, it is confirmed that the sufficient storage space was secured and the water level reduction effect with the location of the side weir is not large. In addition, the water level reduction rate according to the location of the side weir was estimated by empirical formula and it is provided as basic data that can be used in the planning of the detention reservoir.

  • In this study, we investigated the reinforcing effects of waveform micropiles in a stratigraphic setting comprising buried soil, weathered soil, and weathered rock. We conducted a series of field load tests and determined that waveform micropiles exhibited sufficient bearing capacity through frictional resistance in the soil layer and demonstrated favorable constructability in conditions with deep bedrock layers. Moreover, the vertical stiffness of waveform micropiles was approximately 2.2 times higher than that of conventional micropiles when subjected to the same design load. Pile group load tests comprising conventional and waveform micropiles showed that micropiles with higher stiffness carried a greater proportion of the load. Although there was no significant difference in the bearing capacity between conventional and waveform micropiles under the same design load, waveform micropiles with higher stiffness showed a load-carrying capacity 1.7 to 3.2 times greater than that of conventional micropiles. These findings suggest that waveform micropiles can be effectively used for foundation reinforcement and reduce the risk of foundation failure when increased loads due to modifications such as expansion remodeling are expected.

  • Although the Granular Compaction Pile (GCP) has been used for many decades, several failures still occur such as bulging, shear failure and other phenomena, indicating that more refined study is needed. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the stress concentration ratio for both area replacement ratio and shear strength of soil through literature review and numerical analysis. Numerical analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS has been performed for the composite ground with GCP. The behavior stress and settlement of composite ground have been analyzed for both the area replacement ratio (10~40%) and shear strength of soil (25~75 kPa). As a result of numerical analysis, as the soil strength and area replacement ratio increased, the average stree related coefficient and stress concentration ratio for depth tended to decrease, and stress related coefficient of upper layer tend to decrease equally, but the stress concentration ratio decreased. Therefore, tendency that the value in th upper layer differs from the value in other depths was displayed. Care should be taken because it is possible to make mistakes in designing the entire composite ground with the values measured in the upper layer. Also, the settlement reduction factor was compared with the existing equation and numerical analysis. And the value obatined from the existing equation and numerical analysis are similar.

  • Sand compaction pile(SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which is being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model test and large-scale direct shear test were performed to investigate the effects of area replacement ratio of composite ground in order to find out the optimum value of area replacement ratio for the ground improvement purpose. Area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% were chosen respectively in the model tests to study the effects of area replacement ratio on variations of stress concentration ratio, settlement and shear strength characteristics of composite ground. In large-scale direct she4ar tests, area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 46% were applied to study their effects on shear strength characteristics of composite ground.
