An Analysis of Engine Failures Using Multivariate Data Analysis Method (다변량해석법을 이용한 기관고장분석)

  • The basis of all approaches to improve reliability of marine engines exists in analyzing the field data of troubles and failures on marine engines. This paper analyses the data of troubles and failures on marine engines by Principal Component Analysis Method, one of Multivariate Data Analysis Method. The total number of data investigated is 211 and the observation period is 9 years. The analyzed factors are categorized among five groups respectively; electric.automatic control equipments, auxiliary machinery, pipings, refrigerators.air conditioners, and main engine. The failures in main engine are discovered by a definite fact of disorder, on the contrary, the failures in auxiliary machinery, refrigerators and air conditioners are discovered by sensible judgement of the operators.

Effects of Metallaic Dialkyldithiophosphates on Lubricating Oil (금속 디알킬디티오인산염이 윤활유에 미치는 영향)

  • Metallic dialkyldithiophosphates are widely used in lubricating oils as antioxidant and antiwear agents. Zinc DDTP are used most frequently in lubricating oil. Zinc, lead, tin and cobalt DDTP were prepared with primary and secondary alkyl groups. The effects of oxidation, thermal stability, metal corrosion and antiwear of each metallic DDTP prepared were studied. Based on the results, cobalt DDTP has a significant effect of antiwear on chrome alloy steel comparing with the other metallic DDTP. Also cobalt DDTP has a characteristic property of thermal sensitivity in its color, which was shown by the color change from brown to blue over a certain temperature. Another phenomenon obtained was that all metallic DDTP initiates the effect of antioxidation at the time of reaching to a certain effective acid concentration in lubricating oil.

  • The tubes in heat exchanger are typically made from copper alloy, stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium alloy material. type-439 ferritic stainless steel is ferromagnetic material, and furnish higher heat transfer rates than austenitic stainless steels and higher resistance to corrosion-induced flaws. Ferritic stainless steel can typically be found in low-pressure(LP) feedwater heaters and moisture separator reheaters(MSRs). LP feedwater heaters generally utilize thin wall type-439 stainless steel tubing, whereas MSRs typically employ a heavier wall tubing with integral fins. Service-induced damage can occur on the OD(outside diameter) surface of type-439 ferritic stainless steel tubing which is employed for MSRs tubing, and the most typical damage mechanism is vibration-induced tube-to-TSP(tube support plate) wear and fatigue cracking. The wear has been reported that occurs mainly on the OD surface. Accordingly, in this study, we have evaluated the flaw sizing capability of magnetic saturation eddy current technique using magnetic saturation probe and flawed specimen.

  • 최근 산업이 고속도화, 고능률화 및 고정멸화의 추세로 발전함에 따라 우수한 내마모성, 인성, 고온 안정성 및 내구성을 갖는 공구 및 금형을 요구하게 되었다. 그러나 이와같은 성질들은 어떤 단일 재료에서는 얻을 수 없으며 적당한 기판공구나 금혈위에 내마모성 보호피막을 coating함으로 비교적 저렴하게 얻을 수 있다. 화학증착법으로 TiC, TiN등을 증착시킬때에는 $1000^{\circ}C$정도의 반응온도가 필요하며 이러한 증착온도는 모재가 초경합금일때는 문제가 안되나 강재일 경우 모재의 연화와 칫수변화의 문제를 야기시킨다. 최근에는 플라즈마를 사용하여 증착반응온도를 $550^{\circ}C$ 이하로 낮추는 플라즈마 화학 증착볍(PACVD)이 대두되고 있다. 그러나 이 방법어서 는 뚱착하려는 금속원소가 TiCl4의 형태로 공급되고 있으므로 생성된 층이 염소를 포함하고 있다. 이 층에 잔존하는 염소는 층의 기계적 성질을 저하시키고 층내의 stress를 유발시킨다. 또한 HCI개스의 생성으로 인하여 펌프 및 장비의 부식이 촉진 된다 이러한 결점을 극복하기 위하여 금속유기화합물 전구체(metallo-organic precursor)로 $TiCl_4$를 대체하고자 하는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있으며 본 연구실에서 이에 대하여 연구한 결과를 소개하고자 한다. diethylamino titanium을 전구체로 사용하여 $H_2,\;N_2,\;Ar$분위기하에서 pulsed d.c.를 사용하는 MO-PACVD에 의하여 $150~250^{\circ}C$의 저온에서 Al 2024 기판에 TiCN층 형 성을 하였다. 전구체 증발온도는 $74~78^{\circ}C$의 온도범위어야 하며 고경도의 코탱층은 54% duty, 14.2kHz, 450V의 조건에서 얻어졌으며 duty, 주파수, 전압이 증가함에 따라 경도는 저하되었다. 이때의 표면 morphology를 SEM으로 조사한바 dome structure가 크게 발달되었음을 알 수 있었다. 본 실험의 온도 범위내에서 얻은 TiCN 증착반응의 활성화에너지는 7.5Kcal/mol이었다. 증착된 TiCN층은 우수한 내마모섣을 나타내었으며 스크래치테스트 결과 17N의 엄계하중을 나타내었다. 본 연구에서 변화 시킨 duty, 주파수, 전압의 범위에서는 층의 밀착력은 크게 변화하지 않았다. titanium isopropoxide를 전구체로 사용하여 Hz, Nz 분위기하에서 d.c.를 사용하는 MO-PACVD에 의하여 Ti(NCO) 코팅층을 SKDll, SKD61, SKH9 공구강에 형성시키는 공정을 개발하였다. 최적의 Ti(NCO) 코탱층을 얻기 위해 유입전구체 부피%의 양은 향착압력의 5%를 넘지 않아야 되고 수소와 젤소 가스비가 1:1일 때 가장 높은 코팅층의 경도값을 나타내었다. 수소와 질소 가스비가 3:7일 때 TiFeCr(NCO)의 복화합물 코팅층이 형성됨을 알 수 있었고 500t의 증착온도에서 얻은 Ti(NCO) 코팅층이 높은 경도값과 좋은 내식성을 나타내었다. 또한 이와같은 Ti(NCO) 코팅공정과 본 실험실에서 개발한 확산층만 형성시키는 plsma nitriding 공정을 결합하여 복합코탱층을 형성하였는데 이 복합코팅층은 고경도와 우수한 내마모성, 내식성 뿐만 아니라 10)N 이상의 뛰어난 밀착력을 나타내었다. 현재 많이 사용되고 있는 PVD법은 step coverage가 좋지 않은 점과 cost intensive p process라는 단점이 있다. MO-PACVD법은 이러한 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법으로서 앞으로 지속적인 도전이 요구되는 분야이다.

Fabricating retrofit crowns to an existing removable partial denture by CAD-CAM: a case report (CAD-CAM을 이용한 RPD 지대치의 retrofit crown 제작 증례)

  • Removable partial denture wearers are exposed to the risks that remaining teeth get damaged by caries, attritions, erosion, and fracture. In the case of damaged abutment tooth which should fit to Removable partial denture (RPD), the fabrication of surveyed crown is followed by the making of RPD. However, making new denture takes a long time, and needs several processes and costs. Also, patients should get used to new denture. If other abutment teeth and edentulous ridges provide the existing denture with support, retention, and stability, use of existing denture is considered clinically acceptable. In this situation, fabricating retrofit crowns to an existing removable partial denture makes patient use existing denture, cuts costs, and reduces discomfort. In this case, severely worn teeth were restored using monolithic zirconia crown which fit to an existing removable partial denture by CAD-CAM. Moreover, support, retention, and stability of the denture were improved, and both doctor and patient were satisfied with the result.

Influence of the nitrogen gas addition in the Ar shielding gas on the erosion-corrosion of tube-to-tube sheet welds of hyper duplex stainless steel (질소 보호 가스 첨가가 하이퍼 듀플렉스 스테인리스 밀봉용접재의 마모부식 저항성에 미치는 영향)

  • Duplex stainless steels with nearly equal fraction of the ferrite(${\alpha}$) phase and austenite(${\gamma}$) phase have been increasingly used for various applications such as power plants, desalination facilities due to their high resistance to corrosion, good weldability, and excellent mechanical properties. Hyper duplex stainless steel (HDSS) is defined as the future duplex stainless steel with a pitting resistance equivalent (PRE=wt.%Cr+3.3(wt.%Mo+0.5wt.%W)+30wt.%N) of above 50. However, when HDSS is welded with gas tungsten arc (GTA), incorporation of nitrogen in the Ar shielding gas are very important because the volume fraction of ${\alpha}$-phase and ${\gamma}$-phase is changed and harmful secondary phases can be formed in the welded zone. In other words, the balance of corrosion resistance between two phases and reduction of $Cr_2N$ are the key points of this study. The primary results of this study are as follows. The addition of $N_2$ to the Ar shielding gas provides phase balance under weld-cooling conditions and increases the transformation temperature of the ${\alpha}$-phase to ${\gamma}$-phase, increasing the fraction of ${\gamma}$-phase as well as decreasing the precipitation of $Cr_2N$. In the anodic polarization test, the addition of nitrogen gas in the Ar shielding gas improved values of the electrochemical parameters, compared to the Pure Ar. Also, in the erosion-corrosion test, the HDSS welded with shielding gas containing $N_2$ decreased the weight loss, compared to HDSS welded with the Ar pure gas. This result showed the resistance of erosion-corrosion was increased due to increasing the fraction of ${\gamma}$-phase and the stability of passive film according to the addition $N_2$ gas to the Ar shielding gas. As a result, the addition of nitrogen gas to the shielding gas improved the resistance of erosion-corrosion.

A Study on Wear and Corrosion Properties of Plasma Carburized Austenitic Stainless Steel (플라즈마 침탄된 오스테나이트계 스데인리스강의 마모 및 부식 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Austenitic stainless steel (STS304) has been carburized using glow discharge plasma and its microstructure, wear resistance and corrosion property have been investigated. A repeat boost-diffuse carburizing was used as an effective plasma carburizing method. The effective case depth of the plasma carburized specimens was increased with the carbon concentration at the surface area. The specimens prepared by 3 hours plasma carburizing under $600^{\circ}C$ did not have the standard hardness for the effective case depth, but the specimen prepared by 11 hours plasma carburizing at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same hardness with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$. The wear resistance increased with temperature but the corrosion properties of the specimens prepared over $600^{\circ}C$ decreased rapidly due to the grain boundary sensitization. However, the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same wear resistance with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$ without deterioration of corrosion property. This could be resulted from the fact that the microstructure of the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ was composed of martensite and austenite, because a partial martensite transformation was occurred only in the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at 50$0^{\circ}C$.

Improvement in Tribological Properties of Carbon Steel Sintered by Powder Metallurgy (분말 야금에 의해 소결된 강철의 트라이볼로지 특성 향상)

  • Materials manufactured by powder metallurgy (PM) are widely used in various applications such as water pump, shock absorber, and airplane components due to the reduction in the cost and weight. In this study, tribological properties of carbon steel subjected by surface treatment were investigated. The main purpose is to increase the strength and improve the tribological properties by reducing pores that formed by PM. Moreover, the surface treatment was carried out at room and high temperatures (RT and HT). The surface roughness of the untreated (NON) and treated (AFTER) samples was measured. It was found that the surface roughness was reduced after both the RT AFTER and HT AFTER compared to RT NON sample. The tribological properties of the samples were performed against bearing steel ball under dry conditions. The friction coefficient of the RT NON samples was reduced by 22% and 56% RT AFTER and HT AFTER, respectively. The wear volume of the RT NON sample was also reduced by 43% and 87% RT AFTER and HT AFTER, respectively. Tribocorrosion tests were also performed and it was found that the surface of the RT AFTER, HT AFTER samples was less corroded compared to RT NON sample. The HT AFTER sample demonstrated a relatively higher corrosion potential in comparison with the RT AFTER samples. Hence, it was confirmed that after surface modification the surface roughness and hardness of the samples were significantly improved resulting in improvement in tribological and tribocorrosion behaviors of PM carbon steel.

Physical Properties and Sulfur Absorption Capacity of Spray-dried Solid Sorbents for Desulfurization of Syngas (합성가스 중 $H_2S$ 정제용 탈황제의 물성 및 반응특성)

  • 석탄가스화복합발전(IGCC) 시스템에서 합성가스 중에 포함된 황화수소($H_2S$)는 후단의 가스 터빈과 같은 장치의 부식을 방지하고, 합성가스를 이용하는 연료전지 등의 연계 공정에서 요구하는 수준에 맞추어 정제되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 $H_2S$ 정제공정 추가에 따른 IGCC 시스템의 효율저하를 최소화하기 위하여 고온고압에서 사용가능한 탈황제를 분무건조법을 이용하여 제조하고 제조된 탈황제에 대해 물성 및 황 흡수능 시험을 실시하였다. 형상, 내마모도, 평균입자크기, 충진밀도와 함께 제조된 탈황제가 적용되는 유동층 공정에 적합한 강도를 보유하는지 여부를 미국표준시험방법에 의하여 측정하였다. 황 흡수능은 열중량분석기를 반응기로 사용하여 모사 합성 가스 분위기에서 측정하였다. 분무건조 성형된 탈황제의 일부가 구형이 아닌 타원형 또는 도넛 형태를 나타내고 있어 형상 개선을 위한 제조방법 개선이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 제조된 탈황제는 기공도가 65% 이상으로 macropore가 기공부피의 대부분을, mesopore가 비표면적의 대부분을 제공하고 있었다. 소성온도를 650 $^{\circ}C$에서 750 $^{\circ}C$로 증가시킴에 따라 대체로 강도가 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 열중량분석기로 측정된 황 흡수능은 약 10 wt%로 나타났다. 제조된 탈황제 중 일부는 유동층 공정에 적합한 물성을 보유하고 있었으며 반응성 또한 기존에 개발된 탈황제에 버금가는 성능을 나타내어 향후 공정 적용이 가능할 것으로 분석되었다.

The Effect of Corrosion of Rolling Bearing Ceramics in Alkalic Solution on the Rolling Wear and Hardness (알카리용액에서 구름베어링용 세라믹스의 부식이 구름마모 및 경도에 미치는 영향)

  • Silicon nitride ceramic has been verified as an excellent rolling bearing material because of its high strength and outstanding rolling fatigue life properties. However under some corrosive circumstances it showed drawbacks such as hardness reduction and severe wear caused by corrosion. In this work, the variations of the rolling wear and hardness of three kinds of ceramics were studied for the specimen aged 15 days in alkali water (90 $\pm$ 2$\^{C}$,25 wt% NaOH ). All of the specimens, ① Si$_3$N$_4$, ② 3Y-TZP and ③ 3Y-TZP alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$, were sintered and post-HIPed, and then polished up to 0.02 $\mu$mRa of surface roughness. Rolling wear tests were conducted by MJ type rolling fatigue life tester under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress of 3.16 GPa and the spindle speed of 1,000 rpm. Spindle oil was used as a lubricant. The specimens were not worn before aging. For the specimen aged in alkali water, Si$_3$N$_4$ and 3Y-TZP were worn by rolling wear tests, and hardness was decreased. While aging the specimens, the phase was transformed from tetragonal to monoclinic in 3Y-TZP and the microstructure change occurred in Si$_2$N$_4$. 3Y-TZP specimens alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$ were not worn after aging and no phase transformation occurred while aging.
