  • Recently in Japan, fracturing was observed on the diagonal member of a through truss bridge at the boundary region with the concrete slab. Local corrosion damage where the diagonal member was enclosed in the concrete slab is an important factor in the fracture. In this study, accelerated exposure tests were carried out on concrete-steel model specimens simulating steel members at the boundary with concrete. Fatigue tests were then performed on the corroded model specimens. Accelerated exposure tests of the S6-cycle, which is carried out on the model specimens for 150, 300, 450 and 600 da ys. Their surface geometry was then measured. From the accelerated exposure test results, change in maximum and mean corrosion depths was determined according to the testing periods. The effect of local corrosion on fatigue strength was also presented based on the fatigue test results.

  • Steel has been widely used as a material in temporary structures. Corrosion attack often reduces the long-term durability of temporary steel members that are not protected from corrosion. In designing temporary steel structures, it is difficult to evaluate their long-term durability, since the thickness loss of steel members is not clear. In this study, laboratory and field exposure corrosion tests were performed on structural steel plate specimens, and the loss of thickness of specimens that were exposed to a subway construction site for 11 months and of specimens that were exposed to environments with controlled humidity and calcium chloride for six months were measured. Finally, a thickness loss equation was formulated based on the environmental conditions and the testing periods.

  • For a steel structure with long service period, structural performance can be changed or decreased by corrosion damage occurred under severe corrosion environment condition. In this study, to examine compressive strength and behavior of circular steel member depending on corrosion damage, compressive loading tests were conducted using circular steel member with artificial corrosion damage which was applied by mechanical process and hand drill. From test results, local corrosion area and pattern is related to their structural performance. Their lcoal bucklings were occurred near artificially sectional damaged part. Reduction in compressive strength of circular steel member was also suggested according to their corroded part and damage.

  • A total of 2,714 methanol extracts of 1,677 plant species in 178 families were screened for nemastatic activity against Rhabditis sp. by 96-well microplate bioassay. The plant extracts with a concentration of $5,000{\mu}g/ml$ were mixed with aqueous nematode solution containing about 20 Rhabditis sp. and their activity was examined daily for 7 days. Out of 2,714 plant extracts examined in this test, 2,362 (87.0%) showed no negative influence on the nematode activity, while 187 (6.9%) inhibited nematode activity about 50%, 95 (3.5%) inhibited nematode activity over 90%, and 70 (2.6%) rather enhanced nematode activity. Among those showing over 50% nemastatic activity, 25 extracts were randomly selected for further screening with Rhabditis sp. and with juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita. The screening revealed that 11 extracts (44%) were consistently nemastatic. The 282 extracts with nemastatic activity could be of use in future studies on nematicidal plants.

  • Weathering steel has been widely used in bridges and cladding materials due to its superior atmospheric corrosion resistance. Actually, weathering steel has often been used in Korea as cladding material. However, the performance of the weathering steel in claddings has not been fully monitored. We conducted a field study on the performance of weathering steels and measured the quantity of corrosion loss on the weathering steel claddings in Korea. Based on the measured corrosion loss and weather (environmental) data, the equation to predict corrosion loss of weathering steels was proposed by using environmental factors in KIHO region in Korea. The proposed equation predicted very well the real corrosion losses of KIHO region.

  • The corrosion durability of steel bridge coatings, such as organic and metallic coatings, is often evaluated by field exposure tests, but such tests take from several years to decades to complete. As a potential method for fast corrosion testing, accelerated exposure tests were considered in this study. The S6-cycle accelerated exposure test, specified in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS K5621), was carried out on uncoated structural steels for 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days, and the resultant weight loss was determined. The weight loss was compared with that obtained from previous field exposure tests, and acceleration factors of the S6-cycle test to field exposure test sites were determined. The application of the S6-cycle accelerated exposure tests to field environments was presented based on the acceleration factor and the amount of flying salt.

  • Steel structures are threatened to reduce load-carrying capacity as the cross section is decreased by corrosion. However, there has been no method in definitely evaluating residual load-carrying capacity and the effect of corrosion to the load-carrying capacity of steel. This study evaluated tensile residual load-carrying capacity of corroded steel plates by using tensile tests of specimens, which were selected from the web of temporary structure's main beam. After the surface shapes were measured and tensile tests were examined, the rust of 21 corroded specimens was, first of all, removed using a chemical method. From the tensile test result, which of reference specimens that was picked off at the flange of the same main 13-mm-thick beam and corroded specimens were based, surface geometry and correlation with the reduction of corroded thickness and strain, yield strength or tensile strength was established as constant numbers. Effective thickness of corroded steel with irregular cross sections could be calculated using average residual thickness and standard deviation. The irregular cross sections could be the evaluated tensile strength that is equalized to non-corroded uniform steel's regardless of corrosion. Also, reasonable measuring intervals of residual thickness could be proposed by using this result to apply for executive work.

  • Fatigue strength of temporary steels and painted structural steels corroded under outdoor atmospheric environments is not clear. In this study, fatigue tests were carried out on steel plates which were cut off from 7-year-old temporary structural member under subway construction environment and from 75-year-old Yeongdo bridge member under marine atmospheric environment. After removing corrosion production on the steel surface, 3-dimensional surface geometry of the corroded steel was measured at intervals of $1.0{\times}1.0mm$, and corrosion characteristics such as minimum, maximum and mean values of residual thicknesses were calculated. From the fatigue test and FEM analysis results, the relationship between corrosion characteristics and fatigue behavior was presented, and change in fatigue strength of the unpainted and painted steels corroded in outdoor environments was also presented.
