This survey was conducted from April, 2011 to May, 2011 and 265 responses from the survey were used for the analysis. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA pearson correlation and multiple regression. The research findings could be summarized as the followings. First, the mean scores of gender role attitude, conjugal power, marital satisfaction of the marital middle-aged couples were higher than averages. Second, gender role attitude and conjugal power were the significant predictors to explain marital satisfaction of marital middle-aged couples.

  • In order to explore the power process, a hypothetical model which explains the interrelationships among 3 marital power(traditional, egalitarian, personal), 3 influence strategies(reward, coercion, emotional), and 2 negative conflict resolution styles(attack vs. avoidance) was developed. In order to examine the gender differences, male model and female model were developed separately and compared. Using the data collected from 182 males and 196 females, the hypothetical model was tested. For data analysis, SEM was used. As a result, 3 common paths were found: Greater use of emotional influence strategy increased attack as well as avoidance. Greater egalitarian power increased reward. Egalitalian power affected the use of coercion, but the direction was opposed: male's egalitarian power decreased coercion, while female's egalitarian power increased it. Except these, the analyses revealed the substantial differences between male and female. Based on the findings, the ways to reduce attack and avoidance, and theoretical implications were discussed.

  • The Purpose of this study is to explain marital power processes perceived by Korean urban husbands. To do the task, this study examined the possibility of classifying the power processes and the effect of resources by using resource theory and normative resource theory . The main results were as follows. 1) Power precesses are classified into five factors, such as, 'induction'. 'isolation' quarreling' 'carelessness' and 'withdrawal of love'. Induction, which makes control attempts by using verbal, indirect communication strategies, is proved to be the most factor. 2) Power resource variables are proved to be significant in their effects on the power processes. That is, objective are proved to be significant in their effects on the power processes. That is , objective resources are influencing on 'induction' and 'isolation' behavior and subjective variables are influencing on the other control attempts, Thus, it is found that including subjective variables as well as objective ones is very important. Above all, that the concept of the centrality of patriarchy is supported to be an appropriate concept for the study on the marital power processes i8s a fruitful result in research. But the variances explained by resource variables are relatively small. It is suggested. therefore, further study should include more significant subjective resource variables.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the relations between resources and conjugal power in Korea, with the specific purpose of testing Rodman's theory that norms and resources operate in a cultural context. The subjects of this study were 268 couples with children who lived in nuclear families and resided in Seoul. Relative conjugal power, norms about role and socioeconomic resources of spouses were measured with questionnaires based on Burr's research. The data were collected from one spouse of each couple. The data were analyzed using the Pearson's Correlation and one-way ANOVA. Results of this study generally supported Rodman's theory but were not consistent with Rodman's speculation that resources are more strongly related to power when norms are more equalitarian than patriarchal.

This study was also intended to examine the relations between conjugal power type and conjugal violence level. The subjects of this study were 492 high school students in Seoul. Conjugal power was measured with used to measure the conjugal violence level. For the statistical analysis of data, x2-test, Pearson's r, F-test, Duncan's Multiple Range Test and Cronbach's α for reliability were performed. The major results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. There were significant differences according to social class in conjugal power type: The higher social class of the family, the more Syncratic Type were found. And the lower social class of the family, the more Wife Dominant Type were found. 2. There were significant differences according to social class in conjugla violence level: Couples of the lowest class appeared to be more verbal aggression and physical violence. 3. The most severe Husband-to-Wife verbal aggression and physical violence were appeared when the conjugal power type is either Husband Dominant Type or Wife Dominant Type.

  • Research on the welfare state or income inequality has been concerned with variations in inequality between societies or families. These studies tend to view the family as a unit of shared interests where incomes are pooled and distributed equally. This study makes a theoretical and empirical case for why it is important to look at economic dependency within the family in comparative welfare state research. Using the Luxembourg Income Study data this study examined married women's dependency on their husbands' earnings in 16 western industrialized countries. The constructed measure for married women's level of economic dependency followed the procedure of Sørensen & McLanahan(1987), which stated : "her dependency is measured by the extent to which a woman's standard of living(as determined by her share of income) is derived from a transfer from her husband." The finding suggested that married women's economic dependence was lowest in Scandinavian countries. On the contrary, in Southern Europe countries most married women were dependent on husbands' earnings. In Netherlands, Austria, Germany where the share of part-time work among married women was high, married women's economic dependence was also high. This showed the women's labor force participation did not mean that the majority of couples were equal with respect to earnings, nor that a major shift in the sexual division of labour has taken place. This paper analysed the causal relationship between the married women's economic independence and the welfare state by using Ragin(2000)'s Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. This analysis considered the various conditions of the welfare state : namely, left power, union mobilization density, women's mobilization, public service sector employment and generous support on the family. The result showed that powerful union, high level of women's mobilization and the generous support on the family were necessary conditions for 'relatively high' level of married women's economic independence.
