Intellectualization of Film genre in Korea: the case of Film discourse From 1988 to 2007 (한국 사회에서 영화의 지성화 과정에 관한 연구 : 1988~2007년까지의 인쇄매체에 나타난 영화담론을 중심으로)

  • This study considered the transition of changes in social status of the film through the discourse analysis of printed media, having been published since 6th revised film policy in 1987. For the purpose, Pierre Bourdieu's cultural sociology, or 'Field theory approach' was engaged as a theoretical background. On the basis of that theory, changes in social status was divided into expert and popular field. From 1988 to 2007, doctor's and master's theses on filmologie and the representative academic journal, "Film Studies" were examined with regard to area of expertise, and movie-related books with regard to popular one. This study demonstrated that the symbolic capital had inhered in the cinematic field along with specialization and diversification of analytic aspects, and the relation between the academic approach and political consideration had performed an important role in intellectualization of film.

Space of the Other and its Reproduction in Oasis (<오아시스>의 타자의 공간과 재생산)

  • Oasis shows a phenomenon of structured violence in the daily life of female with heavy disability. However, even victims of the violence don't think they are victims. Through this mechanism of misconception we are all conspired as producer of violence and after all it is connected to the reproduction of dominant ideology. Therefore, it is the task of diagnosing accurately about the mechanism of symbolic violence which is constantly being reproduced in particular spaces through a present of methodology which interpret the perspective of the most fundamental about social pathology.

Strategic Use of Fashion: A View from Sociology of Culture (문화사회학적 시각에서 본 패션의 전략적 사용)

  • Using a data set drawn from 1419 college students, this study analyzes what implications clothing or fashion has on self-expression or image management in Korean society and who are more likely to use fashion as a image management tool in the process of interacting with others. Employing Pierre Bourdieu's concept of capital, we discuss three theories concerning correspondence between class and fashion: the theory focusing on economic capital in emphasizing the correspondence; the theory focusing on cultural capital in emphasizing the correspondence and the theory emphasizing relationships between fashion and other factors rather than class. Based on the theoretical examination, we select independent variables that can be grouped into status/class variables, or economic capital variables(such as subjective status, income, father's education, father's occupation) and socio-cultural variables, or cultural capital variables(such as possession of cultural capital, desire for upward mobility). Upon regressing strategic use of fashion on independent variables, we find that both status/class variables and socio-cultural variables are statistically significant in explaining the strategic mobilization of fashion for one's image production or social success. It shows that class as a form of economic capital has important effects on the strategic use of fashion, and cultural capital also has effects independent of economic capital.

Conceptualizing Fashion Capital: An Exploratory Study (패션자본의 개념화를 위한 탐색적 연구)

  • The term 'fashion capital' has been used in conjunction with Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital. The aim of the present study was to explore the concept of fashion capital existing independently within the field of fashion. In-depth interviews were conducted with 8 fashion specialists and enthusiasts, seeking to uncover the structures, characteristics, and paths of fashion capital accumulation possessed by individuals with high fashion capital. As a result, fashion capital was broadly categorized into inherited capital, acquired capital, and institutionalized capital. Key components were identified, including inherited capital related to influence of family and childhood environment, acquired capital encompassing fashion activities, fashion knowledge, and ability to appreciate fashion, and institutionalized capital represented by economic benefits transformed from other forms of capitals. Additionally, 13 supplementary elements were identified. These elements could be broadly categorized into inherited, acquired capital, and institutionalized capital, as outlined by Bourdieu. This study initiates an academic discussion on the concept of fashion capital within the domain of fashion consumer research. Findings of this study have potential to provide educational and practical implications for both fashion industry and academia.

A Study on the Distinguishing Characteristics of Middle-aged Male CEO's Appearance Management using Class Theory Bourdieu's (부르디외의 계급이론을 이용한 중년 남성 CEO의 외모관리에서 나타나는 구별짓기 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the appearance management aspects of middle-aged male CEO's based on Bourdieu's class theory. We conducted in-depth interviews with male CEOs in their 40s and 50s to understand the characteristics of appearance management in terms of economic, cultural and social capital. We found that they acquire educational capital based on their parents' economic capital and form their own cultural capital as adults. They had the characteristics of Petit Brujois, which aimed for a higher class. The characteristics of differentiation based on appearance management identified three results came from solidifying one's class position: clothing management, diversifying and upgrading appearance management, and pursuing their own ideal image. The influence of social network and cultural capital was also observed in appearance management. This study explored the characteristics of discriminatory appearance management through an in-depth study of middle-aged male CEOs as well as contributed to understanding the context of capital and appearance management by applying Bourdieu's class theory. In addition, this study provides basic data that can be referred to a design and marketing direction for the men's clothing market by providing information on male consumers with high purchasing power.

Estudio del contexto de solidaridad social de los movimientos Piqueteros en la Argentina (아르헨티나의 피케테로스 운동의 사회적 연대의 맥락연구 - 부르디외의 아비투스 개념을 중심으로 -)

  • Después de los años 90, en la América Latina, nos llama la atención el surgimiento de los nuevos movimientos sociales que quieran superar o cambiar los caracteres del regimen neoliberalista, el cual nos obliga mantenernos aislados o dispersados. Sobre todo se trató así fuerte en la Argentina con los movimientos sociales de los desocupados pobres que se llaman 'piqueteros' en la segunda mitad de la década 90. En este estudio, he intentado de comprender y explicar cuáles motivos o contextos socio-culturales hayan movido esos movimientos sociales con la ayuda del marco teórico de 'habitus' de Pierre Bourdieu. Por ello, es muy importante interpretar la solidaridad entre la clase obrera y la media según la perspectiva de Bourdieu debido a la sugerencia de habitus de la clase obrera y la media latinoamericana basado en la cultura oral. Porque los movimientos piqueteros argentinos surgieron no desde la clase social ni del individuo abstracto-racional de la modernidad sino de los individuos reales. Y el concepto de habitus se penetra en el cuerpo de los individuos de manera inconsciente construido desde fuera de las condiciones histórico-sociales por mucho tiempo. Y también en la Argentina esa solidaridad ha desarrollado no sólo a superar la pobreza en sí misma sino a construir nuevas maneras sociales de los procesos de producción capitalista en forma del movimiento cooperativista, que se llama 'las empresas recuperadas por los trabajadores'. Por tanto, he analizado el proceso de cambio social en el ámbito de la América Latina relacionando el habitus con la estructura socio-cultural de la oralidad en dos sentidos; primero, se recalca la importancia de solidaridad entre las clases y la media segundo, fuerte resistencia social ante los crisis socio-económicos. Por ultimo, hay que valorar la importancia de la aparición de los nuevos sujetos sociales así como esos movimientos cooperativistas, socialización de los procesos de producción capitalista en renovar la democracia misma.

  • This study examined to the aspects of capital and class structure, focusing on 'Reproduction' of Bourdieu, P, through collecting the post titles of the game community of online FPS games 'Overwatch' and 'Battleground', related to keyword, 'Game Hack'. The data used in the study was collected and refined through the statistical program R and analyzed by the analysis site 'Bigkinds'. At results, we will reveal that the class structure of the online FPS gamer group is based on cultural capital and reproduction, and suggest the right direction for the Game Hack regulation policy from the point of view of the cultural capital theory.

An Exploratory Study on Fitness Consumer: Focusing on Established and Outsider Relations of the Body among Fitness Members of Gangnam and Gangbuk (피트니스 소비자에 대한 탐색적 고찰: 강남과 강북 피트니스 회원 간 몸의 기득권자-아웃사이더 권력관계를 중심으로)

  • This article is a socio-cultural research on the fitness members by employing an original synthesis of the work of Elias and Bourdieu. The purpose of this research is to provide a multidimensional and in-depth analysis of fitness members, by researching the relationship between body groups with differing economic and cultural capital (e.g. Gangnam and Gangbuk, private and public center). Through interviews and participant observation, the established and outsider relations of fitness members in both Gangnam and Gangbuk are examined (Gangnam 12: Gangbuk 12). Participants in social space differentiated by fitness capital and socio-economic positions gather in certain spaces that identify them as members of the same class location: the established body in Gangnam (Gangnam E), the outsider body in Gangnam (Gangnam O), the established body in Gangbuk (Gangbuk E), and the outsider body in Gangbuk (Gangbuk O). The E-O figuration of the body in fitness clubs shows differences in their body tastes and habitus (selecting a fitness centre, body ostentation, social assessment, making muscles, participation in other sports) and civilizing process (fitness manners and etiquette). The fitness centers in Gangnam and Gangbuk were not simply spaces for exercise but symbolic spaces that both recreate and perpetuate socio-cultural hierarchies between members.

A Study on Jeju Music Education Direction through Philosophies of Music Education (음악 교육 철학적 접근을 통한 제주 음악 교육 방향 고찰)

  • In this study, we suggest a policy for setting the direction of Jeju Music Education with implications from the process of arranging philosophical theories related to music education and analyzing advanced cases. The philosophical theories of music education were examined by Schiller, Steiner, Dewey, Bourdieu, Reimer, and Elliotts. In addition, this study checked the lessons in music education programs in Germany, Venezuela, and Finland, and we make policy suggestions in four contexts to set the direction of music education in the Jeju community based on interviews with 10 experts. Suggestions for improving social awareness of music education, suggestions for music education in the elementary and secondary public school sectors, in the proposals for music education in the lifelong education sector, and the suggestions for institutional policy all included music education professionals recruited from among the culture and art sectors within the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province's Cultural Policy Division. Music advisors were also recruited from the music and sector music councils within the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Council.

Occupational Aspirations of College Students in Korea : The Effect of Social Capital and Cultural Capital (대학생의 사회적 자본과 문화적 자본이 직업 포부에 미치는 효과 분석)

  • This paper intends to find the determinants of the occupational aspirations of college students in Korea. According to Wisconsin model, the occupational aspiration of youth has a statistically significant influence on his or her actual education level and occupation choice implying that the more motivated with high-level occupational aspiration will obtain the higher level of occupation. The analysis for this study is based on the survey of undergraduate students' perception, attitude and lifestyle in Korea 2004, which was conducted against 1,947 respondents, and multiple regression model was utilized. The dependent variable for occupational aspirations was measured by the Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale (SIOPS) of Donald J. Treiman. Independent variables include social capital and cultural capital as well as demographic variables, socio-economic status, and human capital variables. Social capital variable was measured by the position generator scale of Nan Lin and Mary Dumin, and cultural capital variable was done to our original index. This study shows that social and cultural capitals are factors having significant influence on occupational aspiration, in addition to the well-known factors such as gender, human capital and the occupation of father.
